Tier Harribel (ティア・ハリベル, Tia Hariberu; Viz: Tier Halibel) is an Arrancar and the former Tres (3rd) Espada in Sōsuke Aizen's army until the latter's defeat. Sometime after Aizen's defeat, she becomes the de facto ruler of Hueco Mundo.[1][2] Eventually, Harribel shared her status as ruler with fellow (3rd) Espada Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck.
Personality[]
Harribel is noted by Kisuke Urahara to be very level-headed and reasonable for an Arrancar, and states that therefore it is in Soul Society's best interests that Harribel remains the ruler of Hueco Mundo.[3] Indeed, despite Hueco Mundo seemingly being attacked by a captain-level Shinigami, Harribel decides to personally head to Soul Society alongside Nelliel to keep the truce between them intact.[4]
Despite her dislike for her former leader, Sōsuke Aizen, for betraying her, Harribel noted that she was be able to understand Aizen's motivations upon seeing Yhwach's remains being gruesomely turned into the new Soul King.[5]
According to Nelliel, Harribel is more shy than she appears to be, and she has a soft spot for children and those who treat children well.[6]
Plot[]
Fake Karakura Town arc (Bleach Official Character Book 3 UNMASKED)[]
When Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi switched the real Karakura Town back to the Human World and brought the fake Karakura Town to Soul Society, the Arrancar who had passed out with deep wounds were transferred to Soul Society. Having come from Hueco Mundo to Soul Society through a Garganta with Rukia Kuchiki to meet up with Ichigo Kurosaki after he finished his battle against Sōsuke Aizen, Orihime Inoue was led by Emilou Apacci and began healing their wounds. On Harribel's body, there were two deep wounds; one was a deep, straight cut, which went straight through the side of her chest, made by Aizen's Zanpakutō, Kyōka Suigetsu, and the other cut went from her back to her womb. The wounds could have lead to death, and no one besides Orihime possessed the ability to save the fallen Espada. After returning to Hueco Mundo via Garganta, Harribel and her Fracción looked upon the destruction which came from the various battles which took place.[7]
The Arrancar were greeted by Kukkapūro, the Hollow dog, whom they recognized as Yammy Llargo's companion. Feeling what was left of Yammy's Reiatsu, Harribel and the others determined the powerful Espada fought with all his might before dying. They realized the Adjuchas Hollows had detected their presence and would arrive shortly, for they were now able to approach Las Noches due to the absence of the powerful Espada. All four understood it would not be long before the fighting normal to the Hollows of Hueco Mundo would begin again. Harribel became distressed at the concept, for preventing it was her reasoning for joining Aizen, but now it would return, and she could not stop it from happening. Cyan Sung-Sun suggested now that Baraggan Louisenbairn was dead and Aizen was gone, she should rule Hueco Mundo in their place. Franceska Mila Rose and Apacci agreed it would be the best course of action, but Harribel disagreed, stating a fake sun could not bring light to the darkness of Hueco Mundo, and all which is truly needed is the silent darkness. Harribel began to make her way toward Las Noches, with her loyal Fracción following behind.[8]
Bleach: Can't Fear Your Own World[]
Shortly after Yhwach's final defeat at the hands of Ichigo Kurosaki, Harribel is rescued from her prison inside the Wahrwelt by fellow Espada Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck and Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez. As the three Arrancar try to leave the Soul King Palace, they encounter Shunsui Kyōraku and Ichibē Hyōsube, who are in the process of turning Yhwach's corpse into the new Soul King. While Grimmjow and Nelliel argue, Harribel interrupts them by asking Ichibē if the "thing" enshrined behind them is what they call the Soul King, the core of Soul Society. When Ichibē confirms this, he asks her if she is able to tolerate such an existence. Harribel refuses to answer, however, saying only that she understands Aizen's motivations now. After parting words with Shunsui, the three Arrancar depart back to Hueco Mundo.[5]
Six months after the Quincy Blood War, Harribel, together with Nelliel and several other Arrancar who used to serve Aizen, are gradually bringing back peace to Hueco Mundo by defeating the remaining Quincy. However, their peace is interrupted when a child clad in Shihakushō named Hikone Ubuginu arrives in Hueco Mundo and attacks them in an attempt to conquer them.[9] Harribel, together with Grimmjow, Nelliel, and the Quincy Liltotto Lamperd and Giselle Gewelle, manage to wound Hikone enough to force a retreat through another Garganta.[10]
In the aftermath, the Tres Bestias arrive alongside Roka Paramia who begins treating the injured Arrancar. As Franceska Mila Rose voices her belief that Harribel must have defeated the Shinigami attacker by herself, Harribel denies this, saying that even the combined might of the three Espada and the Quincy invaders was barely able to push the Shinigami back, despite the child's Reiatsu level being only around captain Hitsugaya's level. When Cyan Sung-Sun asks why the Shinigami would send an actual captain opponent after them, Harribel explains that despite the attacker's power, they were too inexperienced in battle to be a captain. What disturbs her, Nelliel, and Grimmjow more, however, is that it was not the Shinigami attacker that opened the Garganta to escape; rather, it was the Shinigami's Zanpakutō acting on its own accord.[11]
Sometime later, Harribel and Nelliel are informed by Rudbornn Chelute that Grimmjow has left for Soul Society. While Nelliel is worried that Grimmjow wants to attack Ichigo Kurosaki, neither Harribel nor Rudbornn believe that even Grimmjow is that impulsive. Instead, Harribel suspects Grimmjow is after Hikone instead, as he recognizes the child as a threat, though Harribel is wary about Hikone's mysterious Zanpakutō.[12]
Shortly afterwards, Harribel and Nelliel open a Garganta to Soul Society with the intent to recover Grimmjow. As Harribel leaves the Tres Bestias in charge during their absence, Sung-Sun expresses her worries, due to her mistress' earlier capture at the hands of Yhwach. Harribel assures them that she is only going to avoid their truce with Soul Society from evaporating, but silently admits to herself she does not want the mysterious child from earlier to become another Yhwach.[4]
As Harribel and Nelliel arrive in Soul Society, Harribel surveys the area, and is confused to find Luppi Antenor present and alive, as well as Quincy and Shinigami both fighting a gigantic, unknown Hollow. Harribel then recognizes Hikone on top of the Hollow's head and realizes the Hollow is the child's strange Zanpakutō. Meanwhile, the Hollow, Ikomikidomoe, notices the new arrivals and addresses them, asking the female Arrancar if they are "misstresses" of Baraggan Louisenbairn. When an insulted Nelliel counters that Baraggan is dead, Ikomikidomoe reminisces about the former King of Hueco Mundo and lets out another massive roar.[13]
Soon after, Ikomikidomoe proceeds to spawn a large amount of Hollows to attack the Quincy and Arrancar, and while Nelliel confronts Grimmjow, demanding an explanation from him, Harribel recognizes Shinji Hirako's presence and wonders what is happening with Soul Society. Eventually, Hikone returns Ikomikidomoe to his sword form and prepares escapes through a Garganta. Soon after, the Quincy and Arrancar hey are interrupted by the arrival of Nanao Ise, who informs all present that Captain-Commander Shunsui Kyōraku requests their presence. When Grimmjow remains hostile, Harribel convinces him to comply regardless, and also stops Luppi from antagonizing Grimmjow further.[14]
Sometime later, Harribel alongside the other Arrancar, Fullbringers, and Quincy have gathered at Kūkaku Shiba's residence. As Yoruichi Shihōin explains the situation to Kūkaku, the tensions between the different groups are high, to which Kūkaku furiously exerts her Reiatsu and demands that everybody behave in her house, which earns her the respect of both Nelliel and Harribel, who note their surprise at Kūkaku's power despite not being a Shinigami.[15]
After Shunsui Kyōraku finishes explaining his proposal for a temporary alliance to the present parties, Grimmjow initially remains sceptical and asks for permission to fight Ichigo as a sign of good faith, while Harribel asks Shunsui to swear upon the memory of Coyote Starrk. While Grimmjow does not understand, Shunsui is impressed that Harribel caught on to their mutual respect, and his words to the Primera Espada that during war, both sides are in the wrong.[16]
Powers & Abilities[]
Immense Spiritual Power:As an Arrancar and one of the top four members of the Espada, Harribel is forbidden to release her Zanpakutō while inside the dome of Las Noches, for if she were to do so, her immense Reiryoku would be enough to demolish the fortress.[17] Her Reiatsu is golden-yellow.[18]
Descorrer (解空(デスコレール), Desukorēru; Spanish for "Drawing Back/Opening", Japanese for "Loosed Void"):[19]: A technique used by Espada-level Arrancar, and sometimes others, to open a Garganta between the Human World and Hueco Mundo. Harribel used this technique alongside Nelliel to travel to the Rukongai in order to retrieve Grimmjow.[20]
Water Manipulation: Harribel's primary ability is the creation and manipulation of water.[9]
Zanpakutō[]
Tiburón (皇鮫后 (ティブロン), Tiburon; Spanish for "Shark", Japanese for "Supernal Shark Empress"): In its sealed state, Harribel's Zanpakutō, while not particularly long, is unusually wide, and has the distinction of being completely hollow in the middle, essentially consisting of nothing more than the edges of what would otherwise be a normal sword. Its handle is purple, and its guard is as wide as its blade, with three small holes on either end, which Harribel uses to unsheathe it. The sword is longer than its sheath, and is worn horizontally on her upper back.[21]
- Resurrección: Its release command is "Destroy" (討て, Ute; Viz "Hunt"). Holding her Zanpakutō in front of her with the blade pointing down, Harribel, declaring the release command, is completely enveloped by a heart-shaped surge of water which closes around her to form a cocoon-like cyclone, which Harribel cuts herself out of. In this form, her clothes and Espada tattoo are gone. Her mask remnants become a collar, with extensions covering her nipples. She gains spaulders on her shoulders, which bear a resemblance to shark fins, and two ribbon-like protrusions on her back. A thin, spine-like structure forms on her stomach, spanning from her waist to the underside of her breasts.[22] Harribel wears a mini-skirt consisting of bones surrounding a dark undergarment. She wears a pair of knee-length boots and elbow-length gloves. Her weapon takes the form of a broad pata, which resembles an elongated shark tooth, featuring an unusual hilt with a hand guard which completely covers her hand. The sword possesses gill markings along either side of the blade. Harribel loses her three braids, causing her hair to become messy, and gains two blue lightning bolt markings on both sides of her face.[23][24]
- Resurrección Special Ability: In this form, Harribel's natural abilities are enhanced.
- Water Shield: Harribel is able to put of a wall of water to act as a shield for both herself and her allies. The water shield is strong enough to block a significant amount of Ikomikidomoe's destructive Reiatsu blast, leaving Harribel with only minor injuries.[27] (Unnamed)
Quotes[]
- (To Ichibē Hyōsube) "I'm just a defeated soldier right now. I have no right to comment. But I understand why our late king hated that thing."[5]
- (To Tokinada Tsunayashiro) "The world requires sacrifices. However, though I used them for nourishment, I had no reason to turn them into playthings."[27]
