"As long as I can strike you down, I would gladly abandon my status as captain right here and now!" |
Tōshirō Hitsugaya (日番谷 冬獅郎, Hitsugaya Tōshirō) is the captain of the 10th Division in the Gotei 13. His lieutenant is Rangiku Matsumoto. He formerly served as the 3rd Seat of the 10th Division under Isshin Shiba.
Appearance[]
Hitsugaya is short, with turquoise eyes and short, spiked, white hair, which tends to draw attention in the Human World.[2][3] He wears a standard sleeveless captain's haori with a green sash around his shoulders, held together by a round, star-like clip. The sash holds his Zanpakutō's sheath in place on his back and is tied to it at either end. He sometimes walks around in his tabi. He is relatively young by Shinigami standards, and has the appearance of a child. In the Human World, he wears a black, short-sleeved, golf shirt and gray pants.[4] He also wore the uniform of Karakura High School.[5]
Before Hitsugaya was a captain, his hair was not as spiky, with only a few spikes here and there. He also wore the standard Shinigami outfit, but with the addition of the 10th Division's insignia on the left breast of his outfit.[6]
17 months following Aizen's defeat, shortly after Ichigo regains his Shinigami powers, Hitsugaya appears sporting a hairstyle similar to that before he became a Shinigami, and a long green scarf.[7][8] His green sash has also changed to a thin chain, but still retains the star-like clip.[9]
After training for an unspecified amount of time in preparation to fight the Wandenreich, Hitsugaya's hair appears to have grown longer, his fringe now reaching down to his eyes despite being held up by a newly acquired bandanna. He also appears lankier than before, with his robes loosely hanging off of his body.[10]
After being zombified by Giselle Gewelle, Hitsugaya's appearance changes dramatically. He now wears a white double-breasted trench coat with black lapels that is fastened by four buttons on either side and which has a badge with a six-pointed cross on its left breast. He has a black belt with a large buckle around his waist, slightly baggy white pants, and white boots with furry black liners. He retains the thin chain holding his Zanpakutō's sheath around his upper torso.[11]
Personality[]
Hitsugaya is generally mature and serious, in contrast to his free-spirited lieutenant, Rangiku Matsumoto. Despite their personality differences, he and Rangiku seem very close as she is willing to follow Hitsugaya's orders through-and-through for important assignments out on the field. Hitsugaya is also easily annoyed by others goofing off or drawing unneeded attention to themselves, such as when he leads a team of Shinigami into Ichigo Kurosaki's school.[2] He mainly dislikes anything that he deems childish as well as being described as something close to a child, such as being deemed as akin to an elementary school child; other things he's not fond of are summer and warm weather in general.
Hitsugaya's favorite foods are watermelon and amanattō, though he does not like dried persimmons. During his childhood in West Rukongai, he was so skilled with spinning tops that he became the local undefeated champion. He often works very hard, but his motive seems to be that if he finishes quickly, he can return to his afternoon nap as he believes in the saying "children who sleep well, grow well". With this in mind, he hopes to grow quickly (and the saying is also a wish shared by his subordinates). Naturally however, they do not voice this fact in front of him, for even regularly practicing this adage for so long, he did not really grow in height.[12]
Hitsugaya is usually joked about by many of the other Shinigami in Soul Society as well as by his enemies, though he tolerates these jokes and goes on with his duties (having often developed a cold attitude toward most people). Although he becomes angry towards such jokes at times, he doesn't take action against whomever insulted him unless they are his enemies.
The only thing he cannot tolerate is not being addressed as "Captain Hitsugaya," or an inappropriate use of his name, as he worked very hard for the title. However (likely as a sign of lingering immaturity), he does not return favor via not addressing any other captain with their title, and only by their last names. The only person that actually calls him by his given name is Ichigo (who he constantly reminds to address him properly), and Hinamori (whom he is overly protective of due to the two of them being close childhood friends) who is the only person allowed to get away usually with not addressing him properly.
In that aforementioned regard, Hinamori tends to call him "Hitsugaya-kun", though both she and Ukitake occasionally use "Shiro-chan" (シロちゃん) — a nickname meaning "Whitey" in reference to his hair — in both cases without any full repercussion other than Hitsugaya only being slightly miffed at Hinamori specifically unlike with how she used such a name for him in their past together (and/or Hitsugaya often focusing on another topic). In addition, Karin and her friends call him by his first name and are never given any serious rebukes for it.
To his chagrin and confusion, Hitsugaya has often received candy and other foods from Jūshirō Ukitake because their given names having the same suffix of "shirō" (as "Jūshirō" and "Tōshirō" sound similar) and because they both have white hair, making them both "Shiro-chan" in that sense.
During his duel with Gin Ichimaru, Ichimaru remarks that Hitsugaya is the embodiment of a heavenly guardian that would be reincarnated every few centuries.[13]
History[]
Hitsugaya comes from the province of Junrinan in the 1st District of West Rukongai.[14] There, he lived with his grandmother and Momo Hinamori. As a young child, Hitsugaya was a bit of a brat who liked to eat watermelons and poke fun at Hinamori. She called him "Shiro-chan" and he retorted by calling her "Bed-wetter Momo." The two were close friends and Hitsugaya, despite being younger and much shorter than his friend, always felt that he needs to protect her.[15] Even at a young, untrained age, Hitsugaya could hear the calling of his Zanpakutō spirit, Hyōrinmaru. Despite this, he never told anyone and couldn't accurately determine what was happening other than to assume it was an ever recurring dream.[16] When Hinamori left to become a Shinigami, he portrayed himself as happy to see her go, though it was more of an act than his true feelings. Her next door friends were scared of him, even though he had never done anything to them. His grandmother, "Granny," and Hinamori were the only ones in the district that weren't afraid of him. His personality was supposedly "cold as ice" or at least thought to be, and he often wondered if it was due to his appearance or attitude.[17] When Momo had been in the Shinigami Academy for 5 years, he began to notice how he hadn't grown an inch. He noticed that Hinamori's hair grew longer and she visited less often, seemingly having a goal in her life now. He also noticed that "Granny" was getting skinnier.[18] While out at the market one day a shopkeeper, whom he was buying items from, was treating him disdainfully. He then meets Rangiku Matsumoto, who yells at the shop keeper for being rude to Hitsugaya and reproached him for his poor customer skills. When Hitsugaya turns around, he is knocked down by bumping into Rangiku's bosom. She then yells at him for "lying there and crying about it and not standing up like a man," although it was she who had knocked him down in the first place. He then shakes her off and runs away.[19] Later that night, he has a vivid dream of a gigantic, icy blue, serpentine dragon with large wings and an echoing voice. This dream is markedly different from the previous ones, where he had only experienced sensations, but nothing substantial to what the meaning might be. This time, however, the reason behind the dreams not only materializes, but tries to tell him its name. Hitsugaya cannot hear him, however, as his voice is muffled by strong winds. He then wakes up in a cold sweat.[20] Upon waking up, he sees Rangiku and is surprised to see her in his home. She immediately tells him to stop leaking his Reiatsu everywhere and to get some sleep. She further explains that his grandmother looks pretty cold, which causes Hitsugaya to notice for the first time that the room is exceedingly cold and affecting his grandmother. Rangiku then tells him he should become a Shinigami, stating that kids with power as strong as his need to learn how to bring their power under control. She explains that if he stays the way he is, his power will end up killing his grandmother. At first, Hitsugaya isn't sure what she is talking about, but she calmly places her hand on his chest and asks him if he hears a voice calling out to him. She explains to him that once he has found that voice, he'll understand how to control his power. She then notes that for that to happen he must become a Shinigami.[21] Soon after, he tells his grandmother of his intentions of becoming a Shinigami. Much to Hitsugaya's surprise, she is happy for him. She tells him that she had always felt that he holds everything in because he didn't want to leave her, but doing so was only hurting him and in turn, seeing him that way, hurt her. Hitsugaya then leaves to follow his own path with his grandmother's blessing.[22] With Hitsugaya's natural talent, he quickly entered the Shinigami Academy and graduated early despite his age. Hinamori continued to call him "Shirō-chan" out of habit and felt she needed to protect him. Because of a promise she had made, she only began to call him "Hitsugaya-kun" after he had achieved his Zanpakutō's Shikai and was recognized as a Shinigami.[1] Hitsugaya eventually joined the 10th Division under Isshin Shiba, working his way up to the rank of 3rd seat. One day, Hitsugaya reported to Isshin that a Shinigami in Naruki City died two months ago. Isshin was aware of the situation, having knowledge that the Gotei 13 was investigating the incident. Hitsugaya then informed him that two more individuals died in the past month, while investigating the cause. Concerned, Isshin decided to investigate the cause himself. Rangiku tried to go to assist him, but Hitsugaya stopped her, informing her that they were not strong enough to assist him.[23] Afterwards he was also present to witness Rangiku's rage towards their captain for returning to the Living World, seemingly on a whim.[24] Highly capable and knowledgeable, he quickly became the youngest of the captains within the Gotei 13 in the entire history of Soul Society.[1] He is also a friend of Jidanbō Ikkanzaka, the West Gate Keeper, who taught him the "city rules."[1] |
Plot[]
Soul Society arc[]
Hitsugaya first appears during the captain's emergency meeting called by Captain-Commander Yamamoto. However, he states that as usual old men are engaging in their pointless arguments in response to the constant bickering between his fellow captains.[25][26] Hitsugaya's sharp sense of intuition and keen sense of observation leads him to suspect 3rd Division captain, Gin Ichimaru, of foul play as the circumstances surrounding the coming execution of Rukia Kuchiki become more complicated. He warns Hinamori of these suspicions, which inspires her to attack Gin following Sōsuke Aizen's apparent murder, leading him to lock both her and Izuru Kira in prison.[27][28] After they are taken away, Hitsugaya asks Gin whether he was planning on killing Hinamori. Gin calmly denies it, but Hitsugaya threatens to kill Gin if even one drop of Hinamori's blood should be shed on his account.[29] After Gin releases Kira from his cell, Hitsugaya becomes suspicious and confronts both the lieutenant and captain together. He is interrupted by Hinamori, who now thinks that Hitsugaya murdered Aizen and subsequently tries to kill him. She grips her sword so tightly that her hands bleed. Hitsugaya acts upon his earlier threat and attacks Gin, releasing his Zanpakutō and warning Kira to get out of the way (he suggests at least a twelve-kilometer gap). During their fight, Hitsugaya successfully freezes Gin's left arm, causing him to open his eyes and drop his smile for the first time. Upon being trapped by Hitsugaya, he attempts to kill Hinamori as a distraction, but his attack is blocked by Rangiku Matsumoto, who threatens to fight him if he doesn't stop; Gin relents and disappears without saying a word.[30] Seeing how destructive Rukia's execution is becoming and now firmly believing that Gin is the one behind it, Hitsugaya begins to wonder about what recent actions are fabricated and what are true. Eventually, he and Matsumoto are interrupted by a Jigokuchō, which relays a message detailing how Rukia's execution has once again been moved up to the next day. Hitsugaya resolves to stop the execution and disrupt Ichimaru's plan by appealing directly to the Central 46.[31] Upon arriving at the Central Underground Assembly Hall, Hitsugaya and Matsumoto discover all 46 members are dead. Hitsugaya surmises they had been dead for at least 2 days, but he is concerned about the exact time, as Soul Society had been under martial law and their Headquarters had been locked down since Renji's defeat. Further, the 13 seals of protection was still active and there was no signs of intrusion. Hitsugaya then realizes that the only possible scenario is that they were killed before they were sealed in and that all the recent orders that had been given were fake. He then realizes that such a plot would be far too elaborate for Gin to carry out by himself. He then is interrupted by Kira and he and Matsumoto give chase. When he asks Kira if he was behind the Central 46's death, Kira tells him no and that he arrived just after he did. He also informs Hitsugaya that instead of chasing him, he should be protecting Hinamori. He then goes on to explain that she escaped the 10th Division Barracks, explaining that Hinamori excels at Kidō and that breaking his barrier from the inside would be easy for her. Realizing that Hinamori has been following him and Matsumoto the entire time, he turns back and orders Matsumoto to handle Kira.[32] Hitsugaya returns back to the Central 46 Chambers in time to see Aizen alive and well. Extremely confused at this point, he is surprised to find Gin and Aizen together and referring to the forces of Soul Society as the enemy. Hitsugaya discovers Hinamori injured and asks Aizen when he and Gin became comrades, to which Aizen explains that they have always been comrades. Ever since he had been a captain, the only one he ever thought of as his subordinate was Gin. Hitsugaya then states that he has been deceiving everyone from the start. Aizen then explains his reasoning behind the deception, detailing that he was being compassionate and states that he would teach Hitsugaya that admiration is the furthest thing from understanding. Hitsugaya resolves to kill Aizen for his treachery and releases his Bankai. He then stabs Aizen only to realize it was an illusion from Aizen's Shikai allowing him to land a critical blow to Hitsugaya.[33] After the ordeal, 4th Division Captain Retsu Unohana shows up and confronts Aizen, who gets away. Unohana takes it upon herself to personally initiate emergency surgery on Hitsugaya and Hinamori.[34] They are found to be in stable condition with Lieutenant Kotetsu handling their post-procedural treatments after Aizen's escape from Soul Society.[35] Hitsugaya later fully recovers and watches over a still injured and unconscious Hinamori.[36] |
Arrancar arc[]
Hitsugaya later leads a group of Shinigami assigned to defend Karakura Town against the Arrancar threat, by dressing up as students at Ichigo's school. Hitsugaya explains to Ichigo the danger that the Arrancar represent to Soul Society.[37] When the group of Arrancar led by Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez attack, Hitsugaya is placed in battle against Shawlong Koufang.[38] Shawlong easily fends him off, even with him using his Bankai, Daiguren Hyōrinmaru.[39] The two continue to battle with Hitsugaya's attacks still proving to have little affect on the Arrancar. After some more time, Shawlong begins to surmise about Hitsugaya's Bankai. He concludes it wouldn't be right to finish off a captain when he is weak and that to finish of Hitsugaya while he is in Bankai is far better. He then proceeds to release his true Hollow form, and his attacks severely wound Hitsugaya.[40] Shawlong then uses his sharp claws to cut through one of Hitsugaya's Ice wings. He explains the truth about Arrancar and the Espada to Hitsugaya.[41] Soon after, Soul Society finally approves the release of their power limit, allowing Hitsugaya to fight at full strength.[42] Shawlong questions what the limit release is. Hitsugaya explains that it is a precaution seal automatically put on captains and lieutenants when they enter into the Real World. Hitsugaya then proceeds to use his Ryūsenka technique. Shawlong calls for a retreat of his group, only to be caught by Hitsugaya and he freezes Shawlong, killing him.[43] However, right after Koufang's defeat, Hitsugaya collapses due to his critical injuries, combined with exhaustion.[44] Sometime later, Hitsugaya speaks through a video monitor with Yamamoto who is debriefing Hitsugaya on Aizen's plan concerning the King's Key, and the Captain-Commander allows Momo to talk to him. Hitsugaya is somewhat surprised to see her up and asks her if she should even be walking around. Momo tries to persuade him that she is better, though she doesn't look it. Momo apologizes for not believing Hitsugaya and attacking him. Hitsugaya tells her not to worry about as it didn't bother him. He also tells her to get back to bed so she can get rid of those bags under her eyes. Momo thanks Hitsugaya for accepting her apology until he tells her even if she isn't one she looks like a little kid, and if she doesn't sleep more she will not ever grow. Momo yells at him, telling him he isn't one who should talk about growing.[45] Hitsugaya then reminds her that she is to call him 'Captain Hitsugaya'. As Momo realizes the situation, she asks Hitsugaya if he is going to fight Captain Aizen. To which Hitsugaya says yes, She then asks if he is going to kill Captain Aizen, and then begs him to save Aizen. She explains she knows that what Captain Aizen is doing is bad, but she bets he has a good reason. Expressing her belief, she says that Gin or someone else could be forcing him to engage in his actions. She is quickly knocked out by Yamamoto, to whom he hands over her care to his lieutenant, Chōjirō Sasakibe. Yamamoto apologizes to Hitsugaya, saying he was just respecting her wishes allowing her to speak, but it was perhaps too soon. Hitsugaya is left angered at the state Aizen has left Hinamori in, but he thanks Yamamoto for allowing her to speak with him.[46] Sometime after being debriefed, Karakura Town is attacked for a second time by the Arrancar. Hitsugaya first pits himself against the 10th Espada Yammy Llargo.[47] Hitsugaya's Shikai freezes the Espada, but only for a moment. Yammy comments that the cold attack felt "refreshing." At this point, Hitsugaya realizes even his Shikai at 100 percent is not enough to injure the Espada.[48] Their fight is cut short by the new 6th Espada, Luppi Antenor who insists on fighting all of them at once, and proceeds to release his true Hollow form. But realizing the increase in power the Espada will have, Hitsugaya tries to attack before he is able releasing his Bankai.[49] Though initially unable to defend against Luppi's attacks, as he was knocked to the ground in a single hit from the Espada, Hitsugaya comes back with his Bankai renewed and explains its ability. Luppi's inattentiveness gives him ample time to build up a finishing move, using his Sennen Hyōrō technique - just in time to save his subordinates. Luppi escapes death due to Negación, having only been incapacitated by the ice, and promises to kill Hitsugaya in turn.[50] Upon learning that Orihime has followed the Arrancar back to Hueco Mundo, Hitsugaya and his team return to Soul Society to help in the preparation for the war against Aizen.[51] |
Fake Karakura Town arc[]
When Aizen along with his top three Espada attack the Fake Karakura Town, Hitsugaya along with his lieutenant and the rest of the of the Gotei 13 Captains currently not in Hueco Mundo are awaiting for Aizen's arrival.[52] After the defeat of four of Baraggan Louisenbairn's Fracción, everything turns into an all out war between the remaining Shinigami and the remaining Arrancar. Hitsugaya and Matsumoto ends up facing Tier Harribel and her Fracción. While being surrounded, Matsumoto offers her captain to take on all three Fracción, so that Hitsugaya can fight Harribel alone and undisturbed.[53] After Hinamori arrived, Hitsugaya has a flashback of when she asked him to help Aizen, while Harribel asked why his Reiatsu became disordered. He answered her, saying that he doesn't know, though he was wondering why Hinamori was here.[54] Hitsugaya's match against Harribel seemed to have taken a new turn when the latter sensed her Fraccións' defeat. Harribel forces Hitsugaya back with sheer power from her blade swing and unzips her jacket, revealing her rank as the 3rd Espada which is tattooed on her right breast. Hitsugaya is shocked to find out that Harribel is only 3rd despite her strength. When Harribel taunts Hitsugaya that she has yet to fully demonstrate her strength, Hitsugaya quickly uses Bankai in an attempt to match her very sudden and large increase in power. Harribel rushes him and begins her attack as they come together and lock blades.[55] Harribel knocks Hitsugaya to the ground as she mocks him, questioning "whether this is the full strength of a captain". She then promises to end the battle and proceeds to release her Zanpakutō. After releasing, Hitsugaya comments to himself that her appearance hasn't changed as much as he predicted, but underestimating her would be a fatal mistake. Harribel proves to be in a different league then the young captain slicing the right side of his body from his shoulder before he even realizes it.[56] Believing that Hitsugaya has been defeated, Harribel turns her attention to Captain-Commander Yamamoto, though before she can take any action toward him, she is attacked by an unseen assailant. Harribel dodges out of the way only to see that it is an unharmed Hitsugaya, she just as quickly countered his attacks. Noticeably confused as she had seen him cut down, she turns and sees that she has only struck down an ice clone. Hitsugaya claims that it was a one time technique that he was waiting to use for later in the battle, but Harribel's considerable increase in power and speed as of her release was unexpected. He then comments to her not to underestimate a captain's strength.[57] As their fight ensues, he tells her that he can use any water around him, telling Harribel that she will never reach him. Hitsugaya then attacks Harribel. She reciprocates the situation by melting his ice and stating the iron law of battle. She finally attacks him with his melted ice.[58] Their exchange of attacks continues and Hitsugaya tells her another law of battle. To which Harribel releases a Cero blast at him, which Hitsugaya comments on it being weak. He concludes that the reason her Cero was so weak, as both of them are waiting for the battlefield to become filled with condensation, from this he states that when that happens Harribel will use the opportunity to finish him off with one blow. Hitsugaya grows tired of waiting and states that he has never tried a particular ability in Bankai mode before, to which Harribel asks what he is talking about. Hitsugaya then explains that he doesn't have to wait for water, as Hyōrinmaru is the most powerful ice-based Zanpakutō, and all water is his weapon and all heaven is under his command.[59] He then reveals his never before seen power: Hyōten Hyakkasō. Hitsugaya then asks her name, to which she replies; Tier Harribel. Hitsugaya then tells her his name and rank before attacking again. As the sky darkens, snow begins to fall from the sky. Harribel attempts to melt the snow with her Hirviendo ability, but the moment her sword touches the snow, ice flowers begin to bloom on her body. Hitsugaya then calmly states that once one hundred flowers have bloomed, her life would have ended. He then states that she won't be able to avenge her underlings after all.[60] Seeing the huge creature emerge from the Garganta with Wonderweiss, Hitsugaya looks on at the events taking place. Wonderweiss lets out a huge wail that cracks the ice pillar Harribel is trapped in. Hitsugaya looks surprised as the ice pillar begins to fall apart from around her, and once free, she gazes at him.[61] Hitsugaya is alerted to Aizen's presence when the giant Hollow creature blows out the fire prison that he, Gin, and Tōsen were trapped in.[62] When the Visored arrive, Hitsugaya is bewildered as to who they are.[63] Hitsugaya is later shocked at the large amount of Gillian-class Menos pouring forth from the giant Hollow creature's mouth.[64] After the Visored reveal their mask and easily defeat the numerous Gillians, Hitsugaya comments on how powerful they are.[65] While he was contemplating Komamura's declaration that he intends to fight alongside the Visored, Harribel attempts to attack him while his back is turned. Sensing this, Hitsugaya's hand goes to his Zanpakutō. However, the Visored Lisa Yadōmaru and Hiyori Sarugaki intervene and deflect the blow before Hitsugaya has a chance to unsheathe his sword. Following this, he comments on how there doesn't seem to be time to worry about whether the Visored are friends or foes, essentially agreeing to fight alongside them.[66] Hitsugaya asks Hiyori if he can ask her a question, to which she retorts he needs to keep it short and that she won't tell him any more about them. Hitsugaya says it's fine and that he wishes only to ask them for a favor. He asks if Hiyori and Lisa can take on the Espada as he wants to go and fight Aizen. Hiyori yells as him, asking him if he is crazy as the Visored have come here to kill Aizen as well and that Hitsugaya was already having trouble when they arrived, so what makes him think he can take Aizen. Hitsugaya realizes that he was acting irrationally and that he panicked. Hiyori yells at him some more until he apologizes, and she then berates him further and questions his status as a captain. When she calls him "shorty," Hitsugaya grabs Hiyori and screams at her, telling her she is shorter than him. They continue to fight until they are distracted by Lisa, who is rushing off to fight Tier Harribel.[67] He, Hiyori, and Lisa attack Harribel with their Shikai, creating a huge explosion. However, the battle is cut short by the intervention of Aizen who cuts down the Tres Espada. Hitsugaya watches in shock as his opponent is defeated by Aizen who, afterwards, challenges the Gotei 13 and the Visored to battle. Hitsugaya gathers with the unoccupied captains and Visored planning to protect Ichigo Kurosaki from Aizen and his Shikai.[68] Hitsugaya is the first to attack Aizen, claiming that if nobody attacked, then the battle would not start. He dismisses Aizen's taunt about him being reckless, saying that causing opponents to miss their opportunities to attack is one of Aizen's specialties. Hitsugaya compliments Aizen for not using his Shikai to evade the initial attack. As Captain Kyōraku attacks Aizen's flank, Sōsuke compliments Hitsugaya for being wise enough not to attack him alone.[69] Hitsugaya asks him about what he previously stated about swords devoid of hatred being like eagles without wings, and tells him that placing responsibility alone in their blades is what it means to be a captain. Captains do not swing their swords out of hatred, and tells Aizen that he does not have what it takes to be a captain. Aizen retorts that it is amusing to hear such words from him, as due to what happened to Hinamori, he bears more hatred than any of the captains. As Shunsui attacks Aizen again, Hitsugaya activates his Bankai and admits that his blade is filled with anger. He tells Aizen that he came to Karakura Town to kill him.[70] After his admittance of his hate-filled blade, Hitsugaya declares his motive: "I don't care if I lose my position as a captain, as long as I can kill you". He warns Aizen to prepare himself and proceeds to attack him, but to no avail. After his failed attempt, Komamura and Love step in and attack Aizen simultaneously. Komamura apologizes to Hitsugaya for their intervention, but Hitsugaya tells him he had no intention of fighting Aizen one-on-one.[71] As Suì-Fēng goes to attack Aizen, Hitsugaya encases Sōsuke's arm and Zanpakutō in ice, much to his surprise.[72] After Aizen is attacked by Suì-Fēng and Shunsui, Hitsugaya tells Aizen it is over and rushes at him. Aizen notes to himself that Hitsugaya is so young, as he sees his chance and takes it without planning ahead. That is his biggest failing. Just then he notices off to the side that Shinji is standing to the side holding up his Sakanade's Shikai and smiling. Aizen then realizes too late that he is already affected by Shinji's perception reversal Shikai, making Hitsugaya not actually attack from the front, but the back, allowing the young captain to stab Aizen through the chest from behind.[73] When Ichigo shouts at the Shinigami, questioning what they are doing, Hitsugaya realizes that it was not Aizen that he has just stabbed. Shocked at the sight of Hinamori impaled on his blade, he cradles her for a moment. After he hears her ask "Shiro-chan...Why?" he lets out a yell of rage before he lunges at Aizen. As Shunsui tells him to wait, Aizen takes complete advantage of Hitsugaya's blinding rage, cutting through Hitsugaya's Bankai and injuring him and the surrounding captains.[74] Hitsugaya loses his left arm and most of his left leg from the attack and begins falling down into the town below. As this is happening, Aizen tells him and the other defeated Shinigami that he won't kill them and that they will watch the outcome of this battle.[75] 10 days later after Aizen is captured and Hitsugaya is fully healed, he begins regularly training in a secluded cave, ashamed at his inability to protect Hinamori despite her surviving. Hitsugaya resolves to get stronger and attain much finer control over Hyōrinmaru.[76] |
The Lost Substitute Shinigami arc[]
When Ichigo regains his powers after being stabbed by Rukia with the blade specially designed by Urahara, Kūgo Ginjō mocks the situation and states that as he had stolen all of Ichigo's powers, there was no way that Rukia could accomplish this alone. However, Renji calls out to him then and reveals the presence of himself and other Shinigami, including Hitsugaya, who are observing the situation from the side. Renji explains that everyone of them had given some of their Reiatsu to the sword before Rukia had stabbed Ichigo, thus allowing him to regain more of his powers.[77] After Ichigo learns of how Yamamoto ordered that the Gotei 13 captains and lieutenants to help restore his powers, Hitsugaya says that Yamamoto would not have done that in the past, but Ichigo changed that. He says the power Ichigo received is the result of the way he changed Soul Society by fighting and that he should accept these new powers proudly. Hitsugaya then explains there were to two reasons why Yamamoto decided to give Ichigo's powers back; the first was to help Ichigo who had saved the Gotei 13, and the second reason was to stop Kūgo Ginjō. He says that long before Ichigo appeared, Kūgo Ginjō was the first Substitute Shinigami, revealing that he gave up the position and disappeared.[78] When Ichigo asks how Kūgo could be the first Substitute Shinigami, Hitsugaya reminds Ichigo of when Ukitake gave him his badge. He says the Substitute Shinigami law was created solely because of Kūgo. Captain Kuchiki interrupts him and Hitsugaya says that he'll leave the details for later and they need to focus on Kūgo.[79] After Ikkaku apparently stabs Yukio in the back, Hitsugaya parries Yukio's counterattack on Ikkaku. He tells Ikkaku to keep his guard up. Yukio says that Hitsugaya is good and if he wants bonus points for that to which he says no thanks. As Yukio separates everyone into chat rooms, Hitsugaya is paired with Yukio himself.[80] Hitsugaya quickly finds himself trapped in Yukio's video game realm and is attacked by several digital missiles. While he handles them with ease, he voices how annoyed he is to fight someone so "tiresome".[81] He ultimately reaches Yukio, who congratulates him for arriving unscathed. Yukio explains his Fullbring's power to Hitsugaya, bragging how it makes him god of this space. He then creates giant monsters, setting them to relentlessly pursue and attack Hitsugaya. Hitsugaya begins dodging them with relative ease, only for Yukio to mock him saying that as a captain he must have had a loving, elite family. Hitsugaya surmises from Yukio's attitude that he was probably abandoned as child and questions him about it. As Yukio furiously explains how he left his parents and caused his father to kill himself, Hitsugaya sneaks up on Yukio and freezes his legs and controllers. Hitsugaya reminds him that he had set the monsters to attack him relentlessly, as they surround Hitsugaya, who is standing next to Yukio, he tells him that it'd be best if he deactivated them.[82] Hitsugaya destroys the monsters before they touch Yukio. While Yukio was surprised that Hitsugaya saved him, Hitsugaya tells him that he didn't show him mercy; he simply saved him because there was no guarantee the dimension would disappear if Yukio died. He proceeds to freeze Yukio's body save for his right arm and head, telling him that in exchange for disabling his Fullbring within 5 minutes, he will spare his life.[83] Subsequently, Yukio shuts down the chatrooms, and Hitsugaya meets with other Shinigami, taking a trapped Yukio with him. Upon seeing Byakuya with an unconscious Rukia, Yukio tells him that he doesn't know what happened to her opponent, and that he only knows her basic powers. Hitsugaya then demands of him to turn off the last pocket dimension, but Yukio answers him by saying he is unable to do it.[84] Along with the other captains, he looks on as Ichigo breaks apart the last remaining pocket dimension with his Bankai.[85] As Hitsugaya and the others turn to leave, Byakuya reminds Rukia that they were only tasked with observing Ichigo and his decision. Hitsugaya tells her that the captains knew that if a new Substitute Shinigami ever appeared, Kūgo would take an interest in them and that they had agreed to use that Substitute to lure out Kūgo and get rid of them both. But when they encountered Ichigo, Soul Society changed and they restored his powers and went to watch over him instead. He reminds Rukia of her reaction to being told to observe Ichigo and acknowledges that she was correct. Hitsugaya states that he is glad Ichigo is the one that followed Kūgo.[86] When Ichigo subsequently goes to Soul Society to seek the return of Kūgo's body, Hitsugaya is informed of his arrival and is among the captains present to hear Ichigo's request.[87] |
The Thousand-Year Blood War arc[]
Hitsugaya attends a captain meeting where he is informed about Wandenreich's infiltration, and is ordered to prepare for war alongside other captains.[88] After entering the battlefield with Rangiku Matsumoto in tow, Hitsugaya confronts Cang Du. The two clash, with the Sternritter repeatedly shattering Hitsugaya's ice while blocking his sword strikes with his hardened skin. Declaring that he could not hold back after losing so many comrades, Hitsugaya freezes Cang's arm, only for the Quincy to shatter it again, the force of which sends Hitsugaya flying. After this, Hitsugaya activates Daiguren Hyōrinmaru, only for Cang to steal it with his Medallion.[89][90] Shocked at the Bankai being stolen rather than sealed and unable to get a response from Hyōrinmaru, Hitsugaya tells Rangiku to inform the other captains of the problem via Tenteikūra.[91] Hitsugaya is later notified via transmitter swords along with the other captains and lieutenants by Rin Tsubokura that Ichigo is currently heading to Soul Society.[92] Upon the release of Captain-Commander Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto's Bankai, Cang, now using Hitsugaya's Bankai, notices the ice melting. Hitsugaya comments that all the water in Soul Society is slowly disappearing and therefore his Hyōrinmaru can no-longer be used.[93] Hitsugaya and other captains are then later shocked to sense that Yamamoto had actually died at the hands of Yhwach.[94] Hitsugaya, his lieutenant, and other members of the Gotei 13 are later surprised to sense Ichigo Kurosaki finally enter Soul Society.[95] After the Wandenreich retreat, Hitsugaya is present with several other captains, mourning the loss of the Captain-Commander. Despite the fighting between the others, Hitsugaya remains silent throughout the ordeal.[96] Hitsugaya and the other captains later gather outside Seireitei to witness the arrival of the Royal Guard.[97] Realizing that he can't lament over the loss of his Bankai and that he must move forward, Hitsugaya attends a dojo to retrain himself in the basics of swordsmanship.[98] Later, upon the Wandenreich's return, Hitsugaya appears on the battlefield alongside Matsumoto just in time to protect several Shinigami from Bazz-B's fire-based attack, using his own ice-powers to create a protective barrier.[99] Bazz-B recognizes Hitsugaya and notes that he had his Bankai stolen by Cang Du. He introduces himself as "The Heat," and notes how nice a match it is for them to face each other. Hitsugaya and Rangiku begin to battle, but Bazz-B has an easy time melting Hitsugaya's thin ice. However, after he and Rangiku initiate their strategy, Bazz-B is rendered unable to melt the ice walls entirely. Hitsugaya explains how he managed to do that to a confused Bazz-B. Hitsugaya then uses the ice to slash and wound Bazz-B.[100] However, as Hitsugaya and Rangiku turn to leave, he is shocked that Bazz-B, who taunts them on leaving so soon, is still alive and able to fight.[101] Hitsugaya attempts to fight back, but to no avail. He is then shocked by Bazz-B's elaboration on his powers and how he was strong enough to protect himself and two other Sternritter from Yamamoto's flames. Hitsugaya continues the attack, but realizing that Bazz-B is too powerful, he orders Rangiku to retreat while he holds off Bazz-B. Hitsugaya sets up a barrier made with fine ice, but Bazz-B easily breaks through it and blasts a hole through Hitsugaya.[102] Hitsugaya attempts to fight off Bazz-B, but fails at every turn. He tries another trap, but is shocked to see Bazz-B quickly break free from it. Much of his upper body is then blasted away by Bazz-B's attack. Cang Du then arrives to finish Hitsugaya off.[103] Hitsugaya then watches in shock as Cang lays down a severely wounded Rangiku in front of him. He then witnesses Cang activating his own Bankai. Hitsugaya then receives a Shin'eiyaku, which he takes, causing his Bankai to break and wound Cang.[104] As this happens Cang checks his medallion only to determine that it is working normally, so he is further confused as to why Hyōrinmaru is starting to return to Hitsugaya. As he regains part of the ice wing that Cang lost, Hitsugaya states he doesn't know, and that maybe his Bankai just wants to come back to him.[105] Cang begins to attack and points out that the Sternritter are taught to control the Bankai they have stolen. He attempts to attack Hitsugaya with ice but it redirects itself before reaching him. Hitsugaya tells him not to overdo it as it can't attack itself. As he continues to attack Cang notes that Hitsugaya has used the tactic as well previously and should stop talking as if Bankai have a soul. Hitsugaya questions this way of thinking before he suddenly hears the voice of Hyōrinmaru, to which he remarks that its been a while since he heard him and welcomes him back. Hyōrinmaru fully returns to him, taking on some darker manifestations, reflected in the ice armor. Hitsugaya states that he thought Hyōrinmaru's face was a pain but then he remembered that the Bankai Hollowfied for a few seconds, so he'll have to deal with it for the time being. Cang attempts an attack but much to his surprise Hitsugaya counters the attack stating that the cross-shaped flower is Hyōrinmaru's crest. As Cang is encased in a giant cross-shaped flower, he apologizes for not making it a pentagram.[106] After defeating Cang Du, Hitsugaya tells Rangiku to wait as he starts moving, but quickly collapses.[107] The next day, Hitsugaya is called upon by Giselle Gewelle during her battle with Mayuri Kurotsuchi and his team of revived Arrancar, having been turned into one of her zombies.[108] Hitsugaya unleashes a wave of ice, which freezes Ikkaku's right leg solid before stabbing him through the chest. Hitsugaya slashes him across the back before attacking again, only for Yumichika to block his sword. However, Hitsugaya creates a spike of ice on his kneecap and knees Yumichika in the abdomen before slashing him across the chest. When Mayuri comments on how his body is moving the same way it did when he was alive, Hitsugaya slashes at him, but Mayuri moves behind him with Shunpo.[109] Charlotte Chuhlhourne appears before Hitsugaya and states he is cute before proclaiming he is glad to have gotten Hitsugaya as his opponent. However, Hitsugaya merely slashes him across the chest in response. When he tries to attack again, Mayuri blocks his slash with a Kidō barrier.[110] After Mayuri suggests that Hitsugaya help him test some medicines, the two captains exchange blows. Mayuri manages to parry all of Hitsugaya's strikes, claiming to have installed a sensor in his Zanpakutō that allows him to parry all incoming blades. Hitsugaya responds by trying to knee Mayuri, but he blocks this. As Mayuri suggests that he had been goading Hitsugaya in to such an act, he injures the young captain's leg. Hitsugaya then activates his Bankai and cuts Mayuri down. However, a confused Hitsugaya finds himself back at the start of their battle, with Mayuri again commenting that he will use his medicine on him. He attacks Mayuri again and quickly uses his Bankai to kill Mayuri, only to find himself reliving the encounter once again. When he questions what is happening, Mayuri explains that he is under the effects of his medicine, which is allowing him to see the future. Every time he kills Mayuri, he will return to a set point in the past. The only way Hitsugaya can avoid repeating this forever is to not kill him. Mayuri notes that the drug is incomplete and has serious side-effects after ten rounds, leaving him without a sense of balance for about thirty seconds. Mayuri then asks when he administered the medicine and swings his blade down on Hitsugaya, saying he should find out on his next trip back in time.[111] Mayuri impales Hitsugaya with his Zanpakutō and releases his Shikai, paralyzing him, before preparing a drug. As Mayuri explains it causes him discomfort to use such a drug on a defenseless foe, Hitsugaya screams for him to stop, prompting Mayuri to state that it makes it easier to see him fight back with words. He begins to inject and administer Hitsugaya with the drug, which makes his skin blacken and causes him to scream in agony, prompting a zombified Kensei Muguruma, Rōjūrō Ōtoribashi and Rangiku Matsumoto to appear behind Mayuri. The revived Arrancar attack the zombified individuals as Mayuri watches a screaming Hitsugaya.[112] Following his victory over Giselle, Mayuri takes an injured Hitsugaya and, along with Rangiku, places him in a special container that will allow them to de-zombify and recover from the battle. This comes at a cost of shortening their lifespans but the scientist decides that the cost is worth getting their lives back. When the rest of the surviving Shinigami travel to the Soul King Palace, Hitsugaya and Rangiku are still recuperating but their capsules are brought along for the trip by Nemu Kurotsuchi. Following the battle with Pernida Parnkgjas, the matter of their survival is revealed to Ikkaku and Yumichika by an injured Mayuri who instructs them to release Hitsugaya and Rangiku from the containers. Hitsugaya stands up, recovered but with his lifespan reduced and quietly thanks Mayuri for returning him to normal.[113] Later, as an enormous Gerard Valkyrie is attempting to crush the surrounding area in order to kill all the Shinigami, Hitsugaya freezes his right arm in place before telling him to stay there for all eternity.[114] After Hitsugaya introduces himself as the captain of the 10th Division, Gerard introduces himself as a member of the "benevolent" Schutzstaffel and shatters the ice covering his arm before proclaiming that they should be friends as he smashes the area where Hitsugaya is standing. However, Hitsugaya merely dodges and claims that he is not accepting any new applications before activating his Bankai, Daiguren Hyōrinmaru, and engulfing the upper half of Gerard's body in ice.[115] Gerard breaks free of the ice, forcing Hitsugaya to come up with another plan. Gerard attempts to attack Hitsugaya, but his strike is blocked by Byakuya, who states that Hitsugaya could not hope to take on the Quincy alone. Hitsugaya attempts joking with Byakuya, but gets annoyed as his fellow captain only half-heartedly reacts. Gerard attacks them again, but Kenpachi Zaraki arrives and severs his arm, to Hitsugaya and Byakuya's dismay.[116] After Gerard regenerates his arm, Byakuya explains the power of his Schrift to Hitsugaya, who notes that Gerard must have been much smaller at the start of the battle. When Zaraki attempts to attack Gerard again, Hitsugaya intercepts his strike while berating him for not considering what might happen to the Seireitei below if Gerard falls on it from such a height. Interrupted by Gerard stomping on them, Hitsugaya is shocked to see Zaraki easily block and throw back the giant, and is further surprised when he releases his Shikai.[117] Gerard explains the power of The Miracle, and Hitsugaya replies that he does not know what he is talking about but only knows that reason does not apply to the Quincy's power. As Zaraki battles Gerard, Hitsugaya attacks the latter with Gunchō Tsurara, but Gerard easily bats it away, saying Hitsugaya was boring and not his main opponent anymore. Zaraki then jumped up and batted Hitsugaya into the ground, causing Hitsugaya to angrily ask what his problem was. Zaraki tells him that he needs to stand down, and Byakuya silences Hitsugaya before he can retort. Hitsugaya says that he cannot leave Zaraki on his own, as Gerard was not someone he could take on alone as evidenced by the Shinigami removing his eyepatch. Hitsugaya notes that his ice petals are starting to melt away and that they were all at their limits. He then tells Byakuya that he will look for an opening and use all his power to freeze Gerard to the bone, after which Byakuya should smash him to pieces with Senbonzakura. As Gerard overpowers Zaraki, Hitsugaya and Byakuya begin their attack, but Gerard sees through their ploy and counters them.[118] Hitsugaya and Byakuya are then blown away by Zaraki suddenly activating Bankai, transforming him into a red-skinned being. Zaraki rips off Gerard's arm and sends him flying off the edge of Wahrwelt, shocking Hitsugaya. Hitsugaya is then surprised to see Gerard grow wings on his back and fly back up to confront Zaraki again.[119] After watching Zaraki bisect Gerard, Hitsugaya states that they should probably keep their distance, which Byakuya agrees with. Hitsugaya is shocked as Zaraki flips through the air and lets out a guttural roar, and he and Byakuya turn back to Gerard to see him reforming back into one piece. Gerard, now with a new appearance, fires a blast from the tip of Hoffnung, which nearly engulfs Hitsugaya and Byakuya. Hitsugaya is stunned as the blast causes part of Wahrwelt to fall away, but he uses Daiguren Hyōrinmaru to catch the falling pieces of the city and mitigate the damage below. However, he is sent crashing into the ground when Gerard swings Hoffnung and watches as Gerard overpowers Zaraki. Byakuya tells the struggling Hitsugaya to release his Bankai. However, Hitsugaya refuses, saying that he never said that his Bankai ended once the petals were gone. Revealing that his Bankai reaches full maturity once the last petal disappears, Hitsugaya transforms into an adult with ice covering his forearms, shoulders, and lower legs.[120] Hitsugaya informs Byakuya that his power had not yet matured enough to use his Bankai to its fullest, and that he had to age a bit in order to use it properly. After answering Gerard's inquiry as to who he is with his name, Hitsugaya dodges Hoffnung being slammed into the ground where he is standing before freezing Gerard's shield in place in midair when the latter throws it at him. Reprimanding Gerard for throwing around large objects that could fall on Seireitei like that, Hitsugaya cuts through the blade of Hoffnung before stating that its power has ceased to work because it is frozen, prompting Gerard to summon his Heilig Bogen. However, Hitsugaya notes that he summoned his bow a second too late as Gerard is frozen solid by Shikai Hyōketsu, which Hitsugaya explains is the result of his Bankai being able to freeze anything before it in four seconds. Suddenly, Gerard breaks free of the ice and grabs Hitsugaya while proclaiming that he cannot be bound by the elements of this world, only to suddenly be toppled by Zaraki as his arm is frozen due to touching Hitsugaya. Asking Gerard if he though there would be no consequences for touching him, Hitsugaya watches as Byakuya attacks Gerard's head with Ikka Senjinka.[121] As Gerard's head is destroyed by the attack, Hitsugaya freezes the Quincy's torso and causes it to shatter. Hitsugaya then collapses but is caught by Byakuya, who notes that Hitsugaya pushed his body to the brink with his Bankai, which Hitsugaya affirms. Suddenly, energy begins forming around Gerard as he regenerates, which bewilders and angers Hitsugaya.[122] Renji and Rukia then emerge and are overwhelmed by Gerard's new form, and Hitsugaya notes aloud that they are still alive. He tells the two that the Quincy they faced before does not compare to the monster in front of them now, but the two Shinigami do not recognize him in his matured state. Rukia states that he must be Hitsugaya's older brother, which Hitsugaya reluctantly affirms.[123] After Byakuya sends Rukia and Renji away, Hitsugaya welcomes his return, and begins explaining that the true duty of a Shinigami is not to fight for their superiors or family, but to protect their friends and Humans. Hitsugaya then surmises that it would be most appropriate for Rukia and Renji to go to where Ichigo is, regardless of whether it's a contravention of duty or not.[124] Engaging Gerard once more, Hitsugaya expresses shock and confusion after Gerard is killed by Auswählen.[125] Ten years later, Rangiku and Hitsugaya travel to the 1st Division barracks for Rukia Kuchiki's promotion to captain of the 13th Division. On the way, they encounter Captain Tetsuzaemon Iba who has just returned from training. Hitsugaya praises his work ethic as putting the rest of the captains to shame and teases Rangiku for hers, she deflects his remarks onto Hisagi, who claims to have mastered his Bankai. When Rangiku says that she's never seen it, suggesting that he is faking it, Hitsugaya also states that they've never seen it. He then states that Hisagi's lack of opportunity to perform his Bankai indicates that nothing has come along to break their ten years of peace.[126] |
Echoing Jaws of Hell arc[]
Three hours before Ukitake's Konsō Reisai, Mayuri informs the lieutenants that they are to assemble in the Human World in order to perform the Jogimen Reibaku ceremony, prompting Hitsugaya to question why he set up a vast hologram network to tell them about this when they already knew of the date and time in advance, though Rangiku theorizes that he is reacting to Urahara's recent technological advancements. Later, after gathering at Ukitake's grave, Hitsugaya and the other captains are confused to see Jigoku no Rinki floating in the air around them and are informed by Shunsui that the true purpose of the Konsō Reisai is to send deceased captains to Hell, to their shock.[127]
Powers & Abilities[]
Child Prodigy: Perhaps the most astonishing trait of Hitsugaya is his intellect and natural talent. He is the most gifted prodigy the Soul Society has had since Gin Ichimaru, entering the Shinigami Academy on his first try despite his young age, graduating from the academy in a single year with the highest written and performance scores in each of his classes, joining the Gotei 13 shortly afterwards, and then becoming the youngest Shinigami to ever reach the rank of captain. He has been called many things due to this. Renji and Iba have called him a child genius, and Ichimaru has called him the embodiment of the "heavenly white angel that blesses Soul Society once a century". In terms of intellect, Hitsugaya is equally impressive. He was the first to suspect Ichimaru of treason, and saw that there was more to Rukia's execution than what was being said. Shunsui, one of the strongest Shinigami in history, states that because he is a genius, within 100 years, Hitsugaya could surpass him.[128]
- Expert Strategist & Tactician: Despite his age, Hitsugaya has great instinct and intuition in battle. He is generally aware of everything in his presence, and is also able to see through most deceptions. For example, he discerned that Gin Ichimaru was more than he seemed, although he was not yet sharp enough to realize it was all part of Aizen's plot. He is also a keen analyst, able to deduce the basic mechanics behind an opponent's attacks, and quickly figuring out its strength and weakness to better counter it.[129] As a captain, he is a capable leader. He is given missions from Captain-Commander Yamamoto to lead teams into the Human World many times to deal with threats. For example, Hitsugaya led the team sent by Soul Society that reinforced Ichigo's group against the Arrancar.[130] In battle, he has great instincts against incoming danger, such as from his reaction to Harribel's initial attack after releasing.[131] After losing his Bankai to the Sternritter, Hitsugaya was forced to come up with several creative and unorthodox methods of using his limited Shikai capabilities, such as combining his Zanpakutō powers with Matsumoto's Haineko to create vacuum ice blades, creating a wall made of thin, interwoven ice threads and even generating a field of icy mist.[132][133][134]
Master Swordsman: Hitsugaya is masterful at swordsmanship, capable of utilizing his size to effectively counter and outmaneuver his opponents. His skill in swordsmanship is evident in the fact that he is the youngest Shinigami captain; he is therefore one of the youngest Shinigami to achieve Bankai. His skill in swordsmanship is great enough that he rarely uses even his Shikai in battle, at which he has great proficiency with. Instead, he relies on Hyōrinmaru's sealed form, only using its Shikai or Bankai when things get tough.[135][136]
Kidō Expert: Tōshirō is highly proficient in Kidō, being able to erect a powerful barrier without an incantation.[137]
Shunpo Expert: Hitsugaya is highly proficient in Shunpo. Repeatedly in battle, he is able to block and dodge dangerous attacks.
Hakuda Combatant: Though usually relying upon his Zanpakutō in combat, Hitsugaya was able to knock out a grief-fueled Hinamori with a single blow, while in mid-air.[138]
Immense Spiritual Power: Hitsugaya's spiritual power has the same effect as his Zanpakutō, as it is an elemental representative of ice. His Spiritual Pressure is said to be very large and "cold". Even before he became a Shinigami, his spiritual pressure was immense and uncontrollable, like Ichigo's, and caused people around him to freeze, namely his grandmother, who lived with him at the time. This cold spiritual power of his reflects his attitude as well. He is also the youngest Shinigami to ever achieve their Bankai. He even had visions of Hyōrinmaru's spirit before he attained it or entered the Shinigami academy.[139] He is able to hide his presence well; on several occasions he manages to surprise Hinamori and Matsumoto with his sudden appearances, which leads them to complain about him "sneaking up" on them.[140] His Reiatsu is white.[141]
Enhanced Endurance: Despite his young and lean appearance, Hitsugaya is a resilient fighter. He survived the attacks of Shawlong Koufang while at 20 percent of his actual strength.[142] He also remained able to fight after taking a direct, piercing attack from Bazz-B.[143]
Zanpakutō[]
Hyōrinmaru redirects here. For the manifested spirit see Hyōrinmaru (Zanpakutō spirit)
Hyōrinmaru (氷輪丸, Ice Ring) When sealed, Hyōrinmaru looks like a normal katana with the exception of the guard, which is in the shape of a four-pointed bronze-colored star. Its hilt is light blue, and sheath dark blue. The sheath completely dissolves when he draws his sword. The sword is somewhat longer than most Zanpakutō, at about 1.4 meters long. This makes it taller than Hitsugaya, preventing him from wearing it at the hip. Because of this, Hitsugaya instead carries it on his back by his green sash over his right shoulder.
Hyōrinmaru is the strongest of all ice-element Zanpakutō in Soul Society. As such, Hitsugaya doesn't need water to be present in order for him to use its abilities.[144] Hitsugaya's control over Hyōrinmaru's power is great enough to use some of its Bankai techniques while in Shikai, though it can backfire and affect him as well.[145] The difference in ability between Hyōrinmaru's Shikai and Bankai is very small; the true difference lies in the quantities of ice each form can create, with the Shikai only being able to create comparatively small quantities.[146]
- Shikai: Hyōrinmaru's release command is "Sit Upon the Frozen Heavens" (霜天に坐せ, sōten ni zase; Viz "Reign over the Frosted Heavens"). In its Shikai, Hyōrinmaru extends slightly in length, and gains a crescent-shaped blade attached to its hilt by a long metal chain, which can extend greatly, if necessary, by force of will. The chain itself can be used for attack, or to entangle a target.[147]
- Shikai Special Ability: Hyōrinmaru allows Hitsugaya to control water and ice. His slashes create an immense amount of spiritual power which overflows from the tip of the blade, creating a flow of ice shaped like a Chinese dragon. The dragon flies towards opponents and instantly freezes anything it touches. Hyōrinmaru can create multiple ice dragons to attack an opponent from various angles.[148] Hitsugaya can also direct his slashes towards the ground and form a wave of ice which rushes over his opponents overwhelming and freezing them. The chain-blade also freezes anything Hitsugaya traps with it. The power it expels is so overwhelming that in Soul Society (where Hitsugaya is not placed under a limiter), its mere release affects the weather within the immediate vicinity, creating a thunderstorm or blizzard.[149]
- Tensō Jūrin (天相従臨, Subjugation of the Heavens): One of Hyōrinmaru's basic powers, as well as its strongest. It allows him to control the weather in the immediate vicinity, or more specifically, the water in the surrounding atmosphere. The ability is usable in both Shikai and Bankai. However, Hitsugaya states that this aspect of his powers is not fully mature, and that he doesn't like to use it in Bankai mode, as he is unsure of whether or not he could keep it from killing everyone in the vicinity.[150]
- Shinkū Tasō Hyōheki (真空多層氷壁, Multilayer Vacuum Ice Wall): To fight effectively despite the small quantities of ice his Hyōrinmaru can create, Hitsugaya has developed this method of ice creation in conjunction with Rangiku's Zanpakutō, Haineko. By using the ashes of Rangiku's Shikai to create layers of ice, and then by removing the ashes and having Haineko return to its sword form, Hitsugaya can create a multi-layer ice wall with several empty layers. This enables the little ice Hyōrinmaru can create to be able to withstand fire attacks with little damage. Hitsugaya can then manipulate this ice to use as a sword.[151]
- Shinkū no Kōri no Yaiba (真空の氷の刃, Vacuum Ice Blade): This ability allows Hitsugaya to control his Shinkū Tasō Hyōheki technique and manipulate the ice by gathering it at the tip of Hyōrinmaru before expelling it forward, creating a large blade of ice which impales his opponent.[152]
- Ryōjin Hyōheki (綾陣氷壁, Woven-Ice Wall): Hitsugaya generates a protective wall of ice by finely weaving threads of ice together.[153]
- Rokui Hyōketsujin (六衣氷結陣, Six-Clothed Ice Binding-Array): Hitsugaya can lay down a trap by placing five snowflake-shaped ice crystals on the ground in a pentagonal formation. When an opponent steps into the trap, each snowflake sends a line of ice towards them. The space within the pentagon is then encased in a large pillar of ice, trapping the opponent.[154]
- Bankai (Incomplete): Daiguren Hyōrinmaru (大紅蓮氷輪丸, Mahāpadma Ice Ring; Viz "Grand Crimson Lotus Ice Ring"): Hitsugaya's Bankai causes ice to flow from Hyōrinmaru onto Hitsugaya, starting at his right arm, which ice forms onto in the shape of a dragon's head around his sword hand, encasing the sword up to the hilt, which also changes from the shape of a four-pointed star to that of an eight-pointed star. The ice continues forming up over his shoulders, with two large wings sprouting from his back and a long tail. The ice forms down his left arm and encases his hand, which ends in a claw. Hitsugaya's feet are encased in ice in a similar manner to his left hand, as they also end in claws.[155] These new ice limbs are movable, and can be used as an extension of himself to aid in battle. During some appearances of his Bankai, three flowers of ice form floating behind him, each consisting of four purple petals shaped like diamonds.[156] These flowers melt away, petal by petal, as Hitsugaya's battle progresses, leading Shawlong Koufang to speculate that Hitsugaya's Bankai will deactivate when all twelve petals disappear, assuming that the captain's Bankai was incomplete due to his young age. During his fight with Luppi, these petals were noticeably absent. However, during his fight in the Fake Karakura Town, they were present once more.
- Hollowfied Bankai: During the Quincy Blood War, Hitsugaya has his Bankai stolen and later receives a pill from Urahara as a measure to retrieve it from the Wandenreich. Upon returning to him, Daiguren Hyōrinmaru changes its appearance due to being temporarily Hollowfied. A sash of ice resembling Hyōrinmaru's tail diagonally crosses Hitsugaya's chest, and he gains a mask of ice covering half his face with a hole for his eye, as well as two protrusions on his head resembling horns.[157]
- According to Hitsugaya, should his Bankai somehow end up trying to attack itself, the ice would instead be deflected somewhere else rather than actually attack the Bankai, as demonstrated when Cang Du attempts to attack him with it.[158]
- Bankai Special Ability: Much like his Shikai, Hitsugaya can freeze objects and areas, though the radius and strength of the freezing is greater.[159] Because the Bankai's freezing ability is much greater, Hitsugaya can swing his tail around as a weapon to try and freeze objects.[160] Hyōrinmaru's Bankai lets Hitsugaya access several additional techniques.
- Bankai Regeneration: During his battle with Luppi Antenor, Hitsugaya's Bankai was damaged. However, it regenerated, and Hitsugaya stated that as long as there is water in the atmosphere, his Bankai can be revived indefinitely.[161] (Unnamed)
- Zanhyō Ningyō (残氷人形, Lingering Ice Puppet/Doll): Upon activating his Bankai, Hitsugaya is able to create and shape a large amount of ice into his exact likeness. It is very life-like, as it can appear to bleed. He stated that he can usually only trick an opponent once with it, so he usually saves it for towards the end of a battle.[162]
- Shield of Ice Wings: Hitsugaya is capable of wrapping his wings around himself like a sphere, protecting him from attacks.[163] (Unnamed)
- Sennen Hyōrō (千年氷牢, Thousand Years' Ice Prison): Hitsugaya creates many ice pillars, which encircle him and his enemy. At his command (when he turns his sword 90 degrees counter-clockwise), these pillars then move towards the enemy, enveloping and crushing them. Though this technique is very powerful, Hitsugaya infers that it takes a considerable amount of time to prepare, and therefore the distraction of his enemy is crucial in successfully completing this attack.[165]
- Hyōten Hyakkasō (氷天百華葬, Frozen Heaven Hundred Flower Funeral): This ability is an extension of Hyōrinmaru's Tensō Jūrin power. However, because Hitsugaya dislikes using Tensō Jūrin while his Bankai is active, he rarely uses it. The ability opens up a huge hole in the clouds, through which a large amount of snow floats down onto his opponent. As the snow comes into contact with the opponent, ice flowers sprout all over their body, instantly trapping them in a pillar of ice. Hitsugaya claimed that when the last of the 100 petals falls, the life of the one who touched it will be over.[166]
- Guncho Tsurara (群鳥氷柱, Icicle Flock): Hitsugaya freezes water into ice and then swings his Zanpakutō in an arc, firing an array of ice daggers at his target.[167]
- Hyōryū Senbi (氷竜旋尾, Ice Dragon Swirling Tail): With this technique, Hitsugaya swings his sword in a linear direction and creates overflowing ice from his blade in the form of a crescent.[168]
- Zekku (絶空, Void Sever): This ability allows Hitsugaya to control his Hyōryū Senbi technique and send it up into the air.[168]
- Hyōryū Senbi (氷竜旋尾, Ice Dragon Swirling Tail): With this technique, Hitsugaya swings his sword in a linear direction and creates overflowing ice from his blade in the form of a crescent.[168]
- Bankai (Complete): Daiguren Hyōrinmaru (大紅蓮氷輪丸, Mahāpadma Ice Ring; Viz "Grand Crimson Lotus Ice Ring") Following the final battle against Aizen, Hitsugaya trained and strengthened his Bankai considerably, completing its development after eighteen months of hard work.[169] Sometime later during his battle against Gerard Valkyrie, Hitsugaya states that Daiguren Hyōrinmaru reaches completion when the last petal of his ice flowers falls.[170] He claims that his power was not mature enough to use his Bankai to its fullest, but he managed to age himself to an adult body when it reached completion in order to achieve its full potential. As an adult using his Bankai, Hitsugaya is tall and lanky, and has ice covering his shoulders, forearms, and knees. When Toshiro was trapped in Gerard's hands he briefly awakened ice wings, similar to his Incomplete Bankai[171]
Bankai Special Ability: Much like his initial, incomplete bankai, Toshiro's Complete Bankai allows him to gain a vast, near all-encompassing control of ice and cold, allowing him to freeze massive objects at once. However in this form, Toshiro's ice gains a new ability, instead of just freezing physical objects, Toshiro can now "freeze" concepts and powers, ie, anything he freezes with his ice, will lose all its powers.[172] An example of such, when Toshiro froze Gerard Valkerie's sword, Hoffnung, he additionally froze the "hope" that powered the blade, rendering its damage reflection ability useless.
- Flash-Freezing: In his matured form, Hitsugaya can flash-freeze extremely large objects at a distance with a simple hand gesture; this also extends to objects that his sword cuts. And due to this form's special ability, anything that he freezes will have all of its functions and abilities negated. If anyone touches Hitsugaya while he is in this form, they will be flash-frozen as well.[173] (Unnamed)
- Shikai Hyōketsu (四界氷結, Four World Freeze): In his matured form, Hitsugaya can freeze all matter in front of him after four seconds of building up his power.[174]
Weakness[]
Zanpakutō[]
Extreme Heat: When presented with the level of heat generated by Yamamoto's Bankai, Zanka no Tachi, Hyōrinmaru in Shikai or Bankai begins to melt and is rendered useless.[175]

- The other video games Hitsugaya has appeared in give him various other techniques:
- Hyōshōgeki (氷衝撃, Ice Shock/Impact): Hitsugaya's neutral special in the Blade Battlers games where he swings out his sword to fire a medium-sized icicle spear that homes-in on his currently-targeted foe. Can also be done in the air, where he fires the ice blast downwards into the ground where it freezes the point of impact before shattering after a while; being powered-up by his Bankai makes him fire 3 extra blasts instead at once. This move predates the usage of Gunchō Tsurara.
- In the Bleach DS fighting games (Blade of Fate and Dark Souls), a similar move named directly after his Zanpakutō (Hyōrinmaru) instead fires 3 blasts of ice a spread that flies in a set range as his Special Attack A.
- A move in Bankai state that also predates the Gunchō Tsurara (and is done extremely similar to it) is Hitsugaya's Bankai Super from Shattered Blade, known as the Ryūyoku Hakureki (竜翼雹礫, Dragon Wing Hail Pebbles), via after connecting with a flying sword thrust, flies into the air to rain multiple ice shards from his Bankai's wings, before then spiral-diving at the foe to drill them into the sky as they get launched away for a bit to fall back to the ground.
- Tōdo Tsuki (凍土突き, Frozen Soil Thrust) or Hyōkai (氷界, Ice Realm): A technique where Hitsugaya plants Hyōrinmaru's blade into the ground to briefly freeze an area all-around him to both damage and freeze nearby foes. The former name comes from Blade Battlers, as his directional special attack, while the latter name is from Jump Ultimate Stars as both his 2 Koma support attack and 4 Koma Special B. The former move can also even be done while floating in midair in his Bankai state.
- Hyōgetsurin (氷月輪, Ice Moon Ring): Hitsugaya's Special Attack B in Blade of Fate and Dark Souls where he slides along the ground dragging his sword's blade with its ice active, then brakes into a jumping upwards slash in a full turn. The forward charge and the sword drag from behind have hitboxes that can lead into the upwards slash which can launch the foe (and also hit enemies behind Hitsugaya in range via the final portion), though smaller targets might not be launched from this attack.
- Nadare Itteki (雪崩一擲, Avalanche Cast-Off): Hitsugaya's Special Attack C in Blade of Fate and Dark Souls with him throwing his Shikai's chain sickle encased in ice at the foe and dragging it back to pull them in (and counts as a separate projectile and will linger for a small bit if it does not properly return to Hitsugaya). This is so far the one instance where Hitsugaya covers his Shikai's chain sickle in ice, aside from a non-canon instance in the anime in episode 132.
- A similar move is used as his Guard Break Attack in Jump Ultimate Stars, only he flails the chain sickle blade in front without any ice attribute.
- Another similar move akin to his usual way of using the chain sickle (to grapple his opponent) is used in the Heat the Soul games as his downward strong attack, where he reels them in with the chain sickle blade akin to a fishing rod/grappling hook (an attack shared with Sōjirō Kusaka) which functions like a blockable hit-grab. However, the way the hitboxes function tend to be inconsistent across the installments.
- Hyōsaiha (雹砕破, Hail Smash Blast): Hitsugaya's Special Attack D in Blade of Fate and Dark Souls where he slide-kicks forward with ice across the screen at a specific-yet-far-range (basically an ice-empowered version of his crouching heavy attack slide kick), which also knocks down. Despite its appearance, only the medium and RF/Reinforced versions of the move must be blocked low.
- Fūchū Hyōrinha (封柱氷輪破, Sealing Pillar Ice Ring Blast): Hitsugaya's neutral/EX Super Move in Blade Battlers 2nd only in normal/Shikai mode, where he thrusts forward in a rush with Hyōrinmaru to encase the victim in an ice crystal, and upon braking his rush right behind them, turns around the slash apart the ice which knocks the opponent away. However, Hitsugaya will not perform the second slash if he connects with the very ending edge of the dash thrust, causing the victim to remain frozen for a set amount of time.
- Suihyōrin (水氷鱗, Water Ice Scale): Hitsugaya's 5 Koma Special A in Jump Ultimate Stars, where he two-hand-slashes upwards to form a brief cluster-wall of ice in front to freeze anyone in range.
- Hitsugaya's iconic ice dragon technique does not have a name, though it tends to be named in the video games:
- As his normal Super in the Blade Battlers games only in Shikai state, it is given the name of his Zanpakutō also akin to his Special Attack A in the DS games (Hyōrinmaru).
- In Jump Ultimate Stars as his 3 Koma support attack and his 4 Koma's Special A, the ice dragon (also named as Hyōrinmaru akin to in the Blade Battlers games) is instead fired as a generic beam with standard beam physics.
- In the DS games Blade of Fate and Dark Souls, the ice dragon attack is given the name Hyōryū Tōha (氷龍凍破, Ice Dragon Freeze Blast) as Hitsugaya's Super Move A. On the ground, the ice dragon was originally fired upwards-and-forwards with an arc akin to that of a dolphin in Blade of Fate, but now gains 3 new flight patterns in Dark Souls (light version on ground has the old arc, light version in the air has the dragon zig-zag downwards, medium versions send it flying forwards in a wavy pattern, while the heavy versions make it zig-zag upwards).
- In Shattered Blade, the move is known as the Hyōryū Renha (氷竜煉波, Ice Dragon Refined Wave) instead.
- In the Heat the Soul series, Hitsugaya's Shikai-state super involves him tossing the chain sickle in unison to bind his foe as he jumps up while also unleashing the ice dragon upon the foe along the said chain's pathing (the chain sickle also freezes their arm if it connects, in ode to his first fight against Gin Ichimaru). This exact super move is also shared with Kusaka in the later Heat the Soul games.
- In the 3rd-to-6th Heat the Soul installments, one of Hitsugaya's Bankai-state supers is the Hyōga Shinryūsen (氷牙神竜閃, Ice Fang God Dragon Flash), where upon thrusting forward with a sword charge, unleashes the iconic ice dragon from it to then have it carry the victim in hits fangs and continuously bite them as it rises into the air. In the 7th installment, it is replaced by the Hyōten Hyakkasō instead.
- As of Rebirth of Souls, the ice dragon's name becomes Hyōryū Renbu (氷竜憐武, Ice Dragon Mercy Martial) instead.
- As his normal Super in the Blade Battlers games only in Shikai state, it is given the name of his Zanpakutō also akin to his Special Attack A in the DS games (Hyōrinmaru).
- Hitsugaya is a playable character in Jump Force. As the Thousand Year Blood War arc version, he has access to his completed Bankai while wearing his Shinigami attire (the state is accessed throughout the rest of the fight when Hitsugaya performs his Awakening or his Awakening Super). Additionally, this version retains the wings of Daiguren Hyōrinmaru unlike the manga, where his completed Bankai starts off wingless and eventually generates a different set of wings.
- His abilities in the game are Ryūsenka, Gunchō Tsurara and Rokui Hyōketsujin; the former two have Hitsugaya immedietely activate his Bankai to briefly execute them, while the very latter is the only non-Bankai based ability in his moveset. Only Gunchō Tsurara can be enhanced (by holding down the Energy Charge button) to be charged up by unleashing more homing icicles than the default amount. His Awakening Super is the Shikai Hyōketsu, which again, automatically puts him in his matured-Bankai form for the rest of the match upon being used.
Music[]

Censorship[]
- When Gin Ichimaru's arm was frozen by Hitsugaya's Zanpakutō, it wasn't grievously wounded, with blood on the ice, in the anime compared to the manga.[178][179]
- When Shawlong Koufang slashed across Hitsugaya's chest during their battle, there was significantly less blood shown in the anime[180] than in the manga.[181]
- After defeating Shawlong, blood splattered from all over Hitsugaya's body and then he collapsed, with Daiguren Hyōrinmaru still being active.[182] In the anime however, no blood splattered from Hitsugaya's body, and his Bankai deactivated before collapsing.[183]

- (To Luppi Antenor) "You're being too lenient with an opponent you've only hit once. Haven't you ever heard of following through?"[201]
- (To Tier Harribel) "I can't say I expected your speed and range to increase so dramatically the moment you released. It's a good thing I played it safe. This little trick is a one-time deal, so I didn't really want to have to use it quite so early. Don't underestimate it. The power of a Shinigami."[202]
- (To Tier Harribel) "Since you were kind enough to lecture me, allow me to tell you something. You are in the greatest danger when you execute a flawless strategy. That, too, is the way of battle."[203]
- (To Sōsuke Aizen) "Wielding one's blade out of duty alone is what it means to be a captain. Wielding one's blade out of hatred is nothing more than petty violence. That is not what we would consider battle."[204]
- (To Sōsuke Aizen) "You've got it exactly right, Aizen. I wield this blade out of hatred. I didn't come here to do battle. I'm here to slice you to pieces as a sheer act of violence!"[205]
- (To Sōsuke Aizen) "As long as I can strike you down, I would gladly abandon my status as captain right here and now!"[206]
- "After the battle with Aizen, I put everything I had into mastering my Bankai. I honed it until it could be called a 'true Bankai'. But now, that Bankai has been taken from me. I must cast aside that which I have lost. I don't have time to be fruitlessly hoping for its return. I must keep moving forward. Moving forward..."[207]
