Overview

Shūsuke Amagai (天貝 繍助, Amagai Shūsuke) was a captain of the 3rd Division, succeeding Gin Ichimaru.[1] He is responsible for orchestrating the events of the Kasumiōji Conspiracy.[2]

Appearance[]

Shūsuke Amagai has a rather unkempt appearance, due to his messy hair and chin stubble. He is a tall, muscular Shinigami who has chin-length blueish hair that he wears in a somewhat ragged fashion. As opposed to his predecessor, he wears a long-sleeved captain's haori. Aside from the extra sword sheath and the white cloth that he keeps in the fold of his uniform, his outfit is a standard Shinigami shihakushō.[1]

Personality[]

While under the guise of being an ally, Amagai is a rather friendly and easy-going individual. While he seems rather loyal and law-abiding, he is willing to bend or break the law if it means helping someone find the truth.[3] Decisive, charismatic, and ethical, he quickly proves to be a capable leader and earns the respect of his subordinates, most notably Lieutenant Izuru Kira, who initially felt distrustful towards Shūsuke.[4]

Amagai has a very low alcohol tolerance, collapsing even after eating sake-flavored pickles and acting irrational after smelling the scent of sake in the air.[3] Although he is initially looked down upon by his fellow division members, Amagai's methods and ethics eventually earned their respect. Amagai also favors teamwork and coordination between individual fighters. He used these methods in the Patrol Corps and teaches them when training his squad.[4]

Amagai's true nature is more deceptive and ruthless. He manipulated all the events that transpired behind the entire Kasumiōji ordeal with an almost callous disregard for the lives of the people involved. He displays a determined, almost stubborn, desire to kill Captain-Commander Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto for murdering his father, and Rurichiyo Kasumiōji for being born into the clan responsible for the development of the Bakkōtō. He also has a habit of taunting his enemies, even when he was not fighting. He displays a somewhat arrogant demeanor, believing himself invincible with both his Bankai and Bakkōtō in hand. Though ruthless, he is willing to spare those he doesn't deem responsible for his father's death. He tells Ichigo Kurosaki that he would have left him alive if he hadn't gotten involved in his conflict with Yamamoto. He even states that Ichigo, a Human, didn't need to lose his life over a matter in Soul Society.[5]

History[]

Ep187AmagaiFindsFather

The son of Shin'etsu Kisaragi, finding his dying father.

Amagai was born under a different name to 1st Division member Shin'etsu Kisaragi. Having not seen his father in a while, he went out looking for him. He found his father at the area where he trained with his Zanpakutō. Upon his father's death, he learned that his father was killed by Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto. He also heard his father speak a peculiar word: Bakkōtō.[6]

Several years later, he entered the Gotei 13 and changed his identity in order to learn the truth behind his father's death. He claimed that he came from Rukongai and he took on a new name: Shūsuke Amagai. After becoming a Shinigami, Amagai continuously gathered information and researched the Bakkōtō. He eventually learned of what the Bakkōtō were and that they were secretly being manufactured by the Kasumiōji Clan. He then concluded that his father was killed because he was trying to learn the truth behind the Bakkōtō. Because he thought that Yamamoto killed him to cover up the Bakkōtō, he swore revenge on the captain.[6]

Ep187AmagaiInPatrolCorps

Amagai during his time in the Patrol Corps.

For many years Amagai trained in order to take his revenge upon Yamamoto. During those years, he also gained the trust of the Kasumiōji Clan and was given his Bakkōtō by Gyōkaku Kumoi. He eventually made his way into the Patrol Corps and rose through their ranks.[6] After Gin Ichimaru's defection from Soul Society, Amagai eventually took over the position as captain of the 3rd Division. During his captain's exam, he fought Captain Kenpachi Zaraki and passed, which, according to Captain Sajin Komamura, is unprecedented from the Patrol Corps.[1]

Plot[]

The New Captain Shūsuke Amagai arc (anime only)[]

Ep168IzuruMeetsAmagai

Izuru Kira welcomes Amagai into the 3rd Division.

During an official Captains' meeting, Amagai is introduced to his new peers as the new 3rd Division captain, where Captain Jūshirō Ukitake tells Amagai that he can ask him for advice anytime. After leaving the meeting, he heads over to meet his new subordinates and introduces Makoto Kibune, and asks Izuru Kira if it would be alright to make him 3rd seat. Though the squad members have difficulty accepting him, he states that as long as he is their captain, he will always protect them. Later, Amagai attends a welcome party for him and Kibune. Izuru pours him a drink of sake and suggests that Amagai make a toast. Amagai reluctantly downs his drink, becoming drunk before passing out shortly afterwards. Kibune explains Amagai's low alcohol tolerance and that he likely drank it to help break the tension between him and the division.[1]

Ep172AmagaiIzuruOffice

Amagai talks to Izuru about the 3rd Division's morale.

Later, after his squad has already left to deal with a threat in the Dangai, Amagai appears and destroys the cleaner with his tuning fork weapon. Afterwards, he ponders what might have reactivated the seizing currents, as he believes that the Shinigami Research and Development Institute would not have made that mistake. He then congratulates Izuru on his leadership, stating that he was expecting those actions from someone who managed to keep his squad together for so long without a captain. He then passes out again, still drunk from the party.[1] Some time later, Amagai has the division doing some labor and chores around the Seireitei as he wants people to regain trust in the 3rd Division and also for the squad to learn to trust him and Kibune. Amagai later helps the division with training exercises he learned in the Patrol Corps.[4]

Ep179AmagaiProposesTraining

Amagai proposes joint-division training sessions to the other captains.

Amagai asks Captain Shunsui Kyōraku if it is possible for different divisions to train together. Kyōraku replies that it would be difficult, but suggests that they discuss the idea with Ukitake.[4] At a captains' meeting, Amagai brings up the 3rd Division's incident in the Dangai. Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi tries to silence him, stating that he's not interested in the affairs of the other divisions. Amagai uses the opportunity to proposes that they have some training exercises involving multiple divisions. While Kenpachi Zaraki expresses that he does not want to get involved with that kind of exercise, Ukitake agrees with Amagai's proposal, explaining that Sōsuke Aizen, Gin Ichimaru, and Kaname Tōsen took advantage of the differences and gaps between the divisions.[3]

Ep179AmagaiSignalsDivisions

Amagai signals the Gotei 13 to co-ordinate their attacks.

After the meeting, Amagai goes drinking with Ukitake and Kyōraku. Amagai becomes depressed for not being able to convince all of the other captains to agree to joint training. Ukitake and Kyōraku tell him that he got his point across, and that Ukitake's been trying to help by convincing others to agree to the joint training. Amagai thanks Ukitake for his help and drinks a cup of sake and passes out immediately. That night, a group of Menos attack the Seireitei, and the 3rd Division moves out under Kibune's command. Izuru and Kibune almost fight over leadership, but Amagai stops them, insisting that Izuru is in charge when he is absent, and warns Kibune to not overstep his authority. He also tells Izuru to be more confident and lead his division when he needs to. As a Menos Grande appears behind their squad, the 7th and 11th Divisions arrive to attack the Menos. Realizing that the other squads are in a state of confusion, Amagai begins to co-ordinate the actions of the three divisions uses his tuning fork weapon to signal them. Each of the divisions are able to take out the Menos. Yamamoto is informed of this and then declares that he approves of the joint training sessions for the Gotei 13.[3]

A captains' meeting is later called. Captain Suì-Fēng reports that the substitute Shinigami Ichigo Kurosaki and Rukia Kuchiki of the 13th Division have disrupted the wedding between the nobles Rurichiyo Kasumiōji and Shū Kannogi, and kidnapped Shū. Amagai asks who Ichigo is, as he was absent from the Soul Society during Aizen's betrayal. After Ukitake explains who Ichigo is and that he had gained Soul Society's respect, Suì-Fēng explains that Ichigo and Rukia are still in the Seireitei and that the 2nd Division are searching for them, but they may require assistance in capturing them. Amagai volunteers to go after Ichigo and states that since the other captains are familiar with Ichigo, they may have trouble fighting him. Yamamoto approves this suggestion and orders the 2nd and 3rd Divisions to capture Ichigo and Rukia.[7]

After the meeting ends, Amagai returns to the 3rd Division's headquarters and is greeted by Izuru, who reports that he saw Kibune entering the Kasumiōji Clan's manor and that he already asked Kibune about it. He states that Kibune denied having any interaction with the clan and also that Kibune acts suspiciously. Amagai is surprised by Izuru's report, stating that he was not aware of this behavior. When Izuru links the timing of Ichigo's arrival and Kibune's recent actions, Amagai cuts him off, saying that even if Kibune does have ties with the Kasumiōji Clan, it does not necessarily mean there is a link between him and Ichigo's intrusion on the Kasumiōji Clan's manor. However, he agrees that the timing seems peculiar and wonders if something greater is occurring behind this incident. He orders Izuru to watch Kibune closely. Afterwards, they meet up with the rest of the 3rd Division and move out to capture Ichigo and Rukia.[7] The 3rd Division is later ordered to remain on standby, and Amagai rejoins them. The next day, Izuru reports that Kibune went missing, as well as one of their guards, who went after Kibune upon seeing him. He orders Izuru to search for Kibune and decides that he himself will take charge of the search for Ichigo.[8]

Ep182IchigoAmagaiClash

Amagai takes on Ichigo Kurosaki.

Amagai finds Ichigo and Rukia outside the manor. Unable to talk their way out of the situation, Ichigo prepares to fight Amagai. The captain orders his subordinates to stay out of the battle, as he is interested to see Ichigo's strength first-hand. They skirmish briefly, , but before the fighting can grow dangerous, Shū Kannogi steps in and pleads for them to stop fighting. Amagai asks why Shū is protecting his kidnappers, to which Shū explains that he actually went with Ichigo and Rukia willingly. He further states that they saved Rurichiyo's life and that the Kasumiōji Clan is in trouble. Amagai agrees to stop and orders his division to stand down. After listening to their story, Amagai informs them that they need a starting point in order for the Gotei 13 to become involved with the Kasumiōji Clan. Ichigo states that they do have a lead: the Bakkōtō. He also tells them that they've been trying to rescue Rurichiyo, as the one at the wedding was an impostor, and that they are trying to convict Gyōkaku Kumoi. Amagai offers to help them search for Rurichiyo and orders his subordinates to inform Izuru of the recent turn of events.[8]

Amagai and a small contingent of the 3rd Division assist Ichigo, Rukia, and Shū in searching ares of Seireitei associated with the Kasumiōji Clan. As they do so, Amagai informs them that Izuru is searching for his 3rd Seat, who has some link to the Kasumiōji Clan, and that this problem started before Ichigo arrived. He explains that he'd rather deal with him himself instead of getting the other squads involved.[9] During their search, Amagai receives a message via Jigokuchō that Izuru has found Rurichiyo at the 3rd Division's stadium. They cautiously proceed there, intent on avoiding discovery by other divisions. Upon reaching the 3rd Division's headquarters, they discover a group of assassins apparently carrying Rurichiyo with them. They pursue the assassins[10] and eventually manage to catch and dispatch them, only to discover that the assassins did not have the real Rurichiyo. A Jigokuchō then informs Amagai of Kibune's death in battle with Izuru.[11]

HitsugayaAmagai

Amagai clashes with Captain Hitsugaya.

They arrive at the stadium and discover that Izuru's suspicions of Kibune were correct. Amagai orders his subordinates to take Izuru to be healed. When Lieutenant Renji Abarai arrives, Amagai requests that he take a piece of Kibune's Zanpakutō, which is covered by Bakkōtō remains, to Captain-Commander Yamamoto, as it is proof of the Kasumiōji Clan's treason. Renji is filled in on the situation and Amagai orders him to inform Yamamoto everything they have told him. Amagai decides that he will break into the Kasumiōji Manor with Ichigo, as Rurichiyo it is the only remaining likely location for her to be held in.Upon arriving at the Kasumiōji mansion, they find it guarded by Captain Tōshirō Hitsugaya and Lieutenant Rangiku Matsumoto, along with the 10th Division. When Hitsugaya insists on taking them to Yamamoto and will not listen to them, Amagai engages him in combat, allowing Ichigo to break into the mansion.[11]

Amagai kills Kumoi

Amagai kills Kumoi.

Captain Byakuya Kuchiki arrives during the fight and informs Hitsugaya of their new orders to storm the Kasumiōji Manor. Amagai is relieved that they can now end their fight and immediately heads into the mansion. He tracks down Gyōkaku Kumoi and Rurichiyo's location where Ichigo informs him that Kumoi is behind everything. Amagai's presence surprises Kumoi to the point that he lowers his blade from Rurichiyo's throat. Seeing that Kumoi is distracted, Rurichiyo makes her way over to Ichigo. However, before she can reach him, Amagai stabs his Zanpakutō between them and blocks their path. As Kumoi attempts to retake his hostage, Amagai cuts him down. Shocked by Amagai's behavior, Ichigo asks Amagai why he did this and Rukia states that with Kumoi dead, they would be unable to uncover his true intentions. Amagai gathers the nuclei of the Bakkōtō within the room. He thanks Ichigo for his assistance and throws the papers tucked in his uniform, causing a green sphere of energy to form. Amagai grabs Rurichiyo and bids farewell to Ichigo and Rukia before vanishing from their sight.[2]

Ep187Sange3

Amagai fends off Kenryū's attack.

Amagai arrives at Yamamoto's office shortly after with Rurichiyo still in hand.[2] Amagai mentions Shin'etsu Kisaragi's name and states that he has come in his place to kill Yamamoto. However, before Amagai can act, Kenryū arrives and uses his Zanpakutō to fog the area. Amagai is surprised that he was discovered, as he thought that he had fully masked his Reiatsu. Kenryū attacks him, allowing Rurichiyo to escape and Enryū appears and uses his Zanpakutō to trap him. However, Amagai manages to break free from Enryū's trap, injuring both Enryū and Kenryū.[6]

Ep187ZanpakutōNullification

Amagai nullifies Yamamoto's Zanpakutō.

Amagai takes the nucleus from the remnants of Kibune's Bakkōtō, which were set to devour the Reiatsu of their users. He then pulls out his tuning fork weapon, which he reveals is also a Bakkōtō, and feeds the nuclei to it. It transforms around his arm into a blade of energy. Yamamoto then unleashes his Zanpakutō and proceeds to engulf the entire area in flames but Amagai stabs his weapon into the ground, dissipating the flames. Amagai explains that his Bakkōtō's power negates a Shinigami Zanpakutō's special abilities, before activating his Bankai, destroying the building around them. As Rurichiyo, Enryū, and Kenryū emerge from the rubble, Amagai threatens to go after Rurichiyo first. Yamamoto tells him to leave Rurichiyo and her bodyguards alone as Yamamoto is his target and not them. However, Amagai states that he is also after the Kasumiōji heir as well.[6]

Before he can attack either of them again, Ichigo appears and blocks Amagai's strike with his Zanpakutō. Ichigo asks why Yamamoto is not fighting back and Amagai tells him that it is because he negated his powers with his Bakkōtō. Yamamoto asks Amagai how he knows about Shin'etsu Kisaragi. Amagai explains that Kisaragi is his father and that Yamamoto killed him. Yamamoto confirms that Amagai is correct and asks him how he knew that he killed Kisaragi. Amagai explains that he survived long enough after Yamamoto cut him down for Amagai to find him. Kitsaragi told him that Yamamoto cut him down. Amagai later joined the Gotei 13 under a different name and gathered information to learn about his father's death.[6]

He learned about the Bakkōtō and figured that his father learned the truth behind the weapons and attempted to break into the Kasumiōji Clan's manor, but was killed by Yamamoto to silence him. He also states that Yamamoto refused to investigate the Kasumiōji Clan, due to it not being in his jurisdiction. Amagai explains that he spent years training to defeat Yamamoto, eventually obtaining a Bakkōtō from the Kasumiōji Clan, and finally worked his way up through the ranks to become captain. He then attacks Yamamoto with his Bankai. However, Ichigo blocks his flames with his Zanpakutō. Amagai tells Ichigo to move, but Ichigo refuses, calling Amagai's actions selfish. He explains that Rurichiyo has been through a lot of hardships because of Amagai's actions and tells him not to draw innocent people into his affairs. Ichigo says that if he wants to get to Yamamoto, he will have to get through Ichigo first.[6]

Ep188IchigoAmagaiClash

Ichigo and Amagai clash.

As they fight, Amagai tries to neutralize Ichigo's Zanpakutō, but it proves ineffective. Ichigo pulls out his Hollow mask, leading Amagai to realize why his technique did not work. Amagai continues to attack, but is eventually overwhelmed by a Getsuga Tenshō. Not willing to lose, Amagai tries to feed more of his Reiatsu into his Bakkōtō, but Ichigo manages to break the Bakkōtō, voiding its effect.[5]

Amagai Dies

Amagai takes his own life.

Amagai rushes to try to kill Yamamoto with the last of his strength, but several more Shinigami arrive to stop him. Yoruichi Shihōin then explains the truth of what happened so long ago. Amagai's father was sent as a spy to find out what was going on with the Kasumiōji Clan, but was taken hostage and forced to use a Bakkōtō which corrupted his mind. Kisaragi was then ordered to kill those who sent him and with no other option, Yamamoto was forced to kill his subordinate. Realizing that he made a terrible mistake, Amagai remembers his father's dying words telling him to "beware the Bakkōtō". Feeling ashamed for his actions, Amagai resolves to end his life because his pride was too great to bear his weakness. He consumes himself in the fire of his Zanpakutō. Before doing so, he apologizes to Izuru for all the trouble and tells him that he enjoyed his time with him and the 3rd Division. As a form of memorial, his Zanpakutō and captain's haori are placed on a hill overlooking the Seireitei.[12]

Powers & Abilities[]

Master Swordsman: Having fought against a master swordsman of Kenpachi Zaraki's caliber while sustaining no known injuries, Amagai possesses considerable prowess as a swordsman. He fights very effectively, putting considerable amounts of strength behind his attacks, and can counterattack from various angles.[4] Amagai fights with great skill against Ichigo while he is in Bankai, and later when he dons his Hollow mask, despite Ichigo's increase in power.[5]

Shunpo Expert: During his first fight with Ichigo, Amagai easily kept up with Ichigo's attacks and countered them. Ichigo confessed to being impressed with Amagai's speed.[8]

Ep186AmagaiKidō

Amagai's unique Kidō.

Kidō Master: Amagai has developed a form of teleportation that Rukia, as proficient in Kidō as she is, didn't know existed. He can use this ability to completely hide his presence and spiritual energy, preventing him from being tracked.[2]

Hakuda Expert: A former high-ranking member of the Onmitsukidō, Amagai is highly proficient in this skill. During his first battle with Ichigo, Amagai grabbed Ichigo's blade during an attack and tossed Ichigo aside.[8]

Great Spiritual Power: His Reiatsu is considerably powerful, even with the release of his Shikai, catching even Ichigo's attention. His great control over his Reiryoku allows him to suppress the devouring qualities of a Bakkōtō.[12]

Enhanced Endurance: Even after exerting a lot of Reiatsu and fighting Ichigo with his Bankai and Hollow mask, Amagai remained capable of dealing intense blows while enduring powerful strikes himself. He is highly resistant to damage that would kill or incapacitate anyone else.[5]

Enhanced Strength: He possesses great strength, which he used to good effect while fighting Ichigo, holding off bladed attacks with force alone, and even pushing back a Getsuga Tenshō.[5]

Keen Intellect: As the leader of a patrol unit for a century-long mission and soon after becoming a captain of the Gotei 13, Amagai is a highly capable thinker.[1] In battle, he is able to adjust quickly to new developments and act accordingly to them. The best example of his intellect is his highly elaborate plan to avenge his father, effectively manipulating several situations to suit his needs.[6]

Zanpakutō[]

Raika (雷火, Lightning Flash): In its sealed form, it resembles a kodachi. It has an olive-green hilt, with a bronze bow-shaped tsuba. He carries it in a red scabbard attached to a strap hanging on his waist.[8]

RaikaRelease

Raika release.

  • Shikai: Raika's release command is Sever (断ち切れ, tachikire). Amagai holds his Zanpakutō upside down behind his back and calls out the release command. In its Shikai, Raika takes the form of a white longsword, with a hook at the end and curved, shell-like pipes that form the hilt. Upon transformation, the pipes emit flames, in both Shikai and Bankai form. The flames emitting from the holes produce a sound similar to a trumpet.[8]
Shikai Special Ability: The pipes emit fire, heating the blade and causing it to take on a fierier color. By heating the blade, it becomes strong enough to resist and repel Ichigo's Getsuga Tenshō.[8]
RaikaFireball

Amagai creating a fireball.

  • Fireball: Amagai can focus fireballs into the crux of the hook, and by swinging forward, he can launch large fireballs through the air at his target. Its attack power is great enough to counter the Shikai of Hyōrinmaru, the most powerful ice based Zanpakutō.[11] (Unnamed)
  • Geysers of Fire: Amagai can focus fireballs into the crux of the hook and, by slamming it into the ground, create large fissures of flames that travel to the enemy at high speeds.[8] (Unnamed)
Ep187AmagaiBankaiRaikaGoenKaku

Amagai with Raika Gōen Kaku and his Bakkōtō.

  • Bankai: Raika Gōen Kaku (雷火・業炎殻, Lightning Flash: Karmic Flame Shell): Amagai holds out his Zanpakutō in front of him as fire swells around him. Raika becomes a large and more detailed version of its former self. Raika Gōen Kaku takes the form of an enlarged sword and turns the edge of the blade a crimson red color, with a hook at the end. The inner side of the hooked blade sports several jagged edges. A large white shell with a light-purple trim covers the hilt. A massive hollow pauldron/shield with the handle is hidden behind it. The sword is about as tall as Amagai in this form.[6]
Bankai Special Ability: In this form, the sword's blade becomes fiery, and fire shoots from the pauldron when its abilities are being used. The sword's blasts of fire are much more potent, large and powerful in this form, and the pauldron on his sword can be used for defense.[5]
Ep188Flamethrower4

Amagai uses his Flamethrower.

  • Flamethrower: While in this form, the pauldron acts as a high intensity flamethrower when it is turned toward an opponent, incinerating the ground in its path.[5] (Unnamed)
  • Enhanced Fireball: Like in his Shikai, Amagai can fireball both medium-sized and large fireballs from the hook of his blade. He can fire the smaller fireballs in rapid succession by spinning the blade above his head.[5] (Unnamed)
  • Enhanced Geysers of Fire: Amagai can thrust his heated blade into the ground and generate spouts of fire that erupt from the ground a short distance away from him.[5] (Unnamed)
  • Fissures of Fire: Amagai heats his blade, engulfing it in fire, and by slamming it in the ground, it creates a large wave of fire that rushes forward and destroys any enemy that becomes enveloped in the flames. It is strong enough to force Ichigo to use his mask.[5] (Unnamed)
  • Wave of Fire: As his blade heats up, Amagai holds it vertically and slams his sword into the ground, generating a wave of fire that heads toward the enemy. While it looks strong, Ichigo was able to pass through it with relative ease.[5] (Unnamed)
  • Gōen Ryūga (業炎龍牙, Dragon Fang's Karmic Flame): Amagai twirls his sword above his head, and the blade is engulfed in fire while flames shoot from the pauldron and lightning builds. He then slams the blade into the ground, accompanied by a lighting strike. The ground begins to shake, and multiple fire spears shoot from the ground at various angles to trap the opponent in a prison of flames. However, this technique leaves Amagai looking very tired. He is capable of releasing at least one fire spear at a time from the ground.[5]
  • Gōen Ryūga: Homura (業炎龍牙・焔, Dragon Fang's Karmic Flame: Blaze): Amagai lifts his sword over his head and covers its entirety in flames. He then slashes at his opponent, launching a giant fireball at them.[12]
  • Raiendan (雷炎弾, Lightning Fireballs): He uses the tip of his sword to launch a multitude of fireballs at his opponent.[12]

Bakkōtō[]

Ep187AmagaiBakkotoSealed

Amagai's Bakkōtō in its sealed form.

Tuning Fork Form: Amagai's Bakkōtō is shaped like a tuning fork, with the sides curving inward and the tip of the blades curving outward. He keeps it sheathed in a wide white scabbard, which hangs on the right side of Amagai's waist.[1] It possesses some unique abilities.

  • Energy Blast: Amagai can fire green energy blasts from his weapon. These blasts are powerful enough to destroy the Kōtotsu in the Dangai.[1]
  • Energy Blade: By tapping the blade of his weapon against the hilt of his Zanpakutō, Amagai can produce a large blade of green energy from his original weapon.[3]
  • Communication Field: By stabbing the Energy Blade into the ground, Amagai can engulf himself in a large pillar of green energy. While doing this, he can communicate with others within a certain area.[3]

Ep187AmagaiBakkotoTrueForm

Amagai's Bakkōtō in its true form.

True Form: The eye nucleus of this Bakkōtō is hidden within the bottom of the hilt. It is unique in that it feeds on the nuclei of other Bakkōtō. By tapping the tuning fork while holding it upside down, the nuclei releases by extending itself like a tendril up and around Amagai's right arm, transforming into an armored black gauntlet shaped like a dragon. From the initial release, the gauntlet can fully encompass the entire arm, creating a claw on the hand. A sash-like component comes over Amagai's left shoulder and down to his waist, containing five Bakkōtō nuclei. Attaching the armored right arm and the sash is something reminiscent of a dragon's tail, which hangs freely from the upper shoulder area of the back.[6]
ZanpakutōNullification

Amagai nullifies Yamamoto's Zanpakutō.

  • Bakkōtō Special Ability: When in use, it extends down and generates a spiritual energy blade from what resembles a dragon's mouth. When thrust into the ground, it sends out a resonating pulse capable of totally negating a Shinigami's powers. The power works by cutting a Shinigami off from his/her connection to their spiritual energy, effectively making every Zanpakutō in the vicinity useless as long as the power is active. This can also be done by striking a Zanpakutō directly. However, the ability does not affect Amagai's own Zanpakutō. In turn, it also has almost no effect on Hollow powers like Ichigo's Visored state.[6]

  • In the Bleach video game Versus Crusade, Amagai primarily fights with his Bakkōtō, which can fire small energy projectiles, a large energy beam, and can generate a large blade of green energy. This enhances the Bakkōtō's attack power and increases the amount of energy projectiles he can fire at once. He can also activate his Bankai, which has more powerful strikes and can fire powerful flames from his Zanpakutō.[13]
  • In Brave Souls, Amagai is a featured technique/green attribute five star character in the special anime summons. He is still available via premium summons, and is always in his Bankai and Bokkōtō state. His abilities consist of flamethrower and fire attacks as well as Goén Ryūga, a soul bomb ability which inflicts burn.[14]
  • Amagai features on an edition of the Fourth Session of Bleach Beat Collection with Makoto Kibune. Kenyū Horiuchi performs two of the tracks as Amagai: "Hyoujou" and "Uragawa," the latter of which is a duet with Kibune.
  • He features in the first volume of Bleach "B" Station's fourth season.

Trivia[]

  • In some instances, while Amagai is wielding his Zanpakutō, a hilt could be seen sticking out of his sheath.[8] This is likely an animation error.
  • In the eighth opening to Bleach, Chu-Bura, and in Bleach: Versus Crusade, Amagai uses his Bakkōtō's blade ability as an enhanced blade.[15]

Quotes[]

  • "The gap felt by those who have been abandoned... The hatred by those who survived... Those who receive the burden of emotions as bleak accept being controlled by them. All I wanted was the death of them. This question haunted my thoughts but the answer had already been lost. "You do not find the answer until you've killed everyone." It was a decision I took. I delete my "destination" with my enemies. I do not fear death as long as I can avenge myself. That is why I am strong."[5]
  • "As Captain of you, I will protect you at all costs. That is the role of a Captain."[1]
  • (To Yamamoto, Rurichiyo and Ichigo) "It never ends. Not until my vengeance is established. Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto... Rurichiyo Kasumiōji... And you, Ichigo Kurosaki. I send you all to hell!"[5]
