Shūhei Hisagi (檜佐木 修兵, Hisagi Shūhei) is the co-lieutenant of the 9th Division, formerly under Captain Kaname Tōsen and currently under Captain Kensei Muguruma. He shares his position with Mashiro Kuna.

Personality[]

History[]

CFYOWTosen trains Hisagi

Hisagi training with Tōsen.

At some point after Hisagi became Tōsen's subordinate, the latter trained Hisagi in a forest in the Rukongai in Soul Society by using his Bankai, Suzumushi Tsuishiki: Enma Kōrogi. As the sheer sensory deprivation Hisagi experienced eventually caused him to frantically swing his sword around before collapsing and screaming, Tōsen immediately deactivated his Bankai, allowing all of Hisagi's senses to return at once. As Hisagi recuperated from both his terror and his lost senses, Tōsen calmed him by admitting that he underestimated how dangerous his Bankai would be for Hisagi. Hisagi tried to apologize for failing, but Tōsen assured him that his terror was nothing to be ashamed of as even he, in his blindness, would be paralyzed with fear should his hearing suddenly disappear.[1]

While Hisagi still feels ashamed, especially when Tōsen reveals that he lasted only half an hour, he also realized that he is one of the first people to experience Tōsen's recently unveiled Bankai, which Tōsen wanted to use to help Hisagi experience and confront his fears. However, Tōsen noted that while Hisagi certainly has fear in him, he cannot properly wield that fear, which Hisagi felt ashamed of.[1]

Tōsen told Hisagi that denying one's fear and trying to cast it away would only turn those who do so into demons. While Hisagi believed that Tōsen would never become like that in any circumstances, Tōsen mused that he did not even know what the light and colors that constitute the world actually were and claimed that if this were to happen and he were to lose his fear and start feeling only hope and happiness, he would no longer be a warrior.[1]

While Hisagi is confused, Tōsen taught him that if he wanted to embrace his pride as a Shinigami and protect the world, he must never cast away his fears, even when he eventually finds himself doubting everything he knows.[1]

Plot[]

Bleach: Can't Fear Your Own World[]

Equipment[]

CFYOWGinjoTsukishima

Hisagi's motorcycle, as admired by Kūgo Ginjō and Shūkurō Tsukishima.

Motorcycle: Hisagi owns a functional motorcycle from the Human World, which he bought from Kisuke Urahara.[2]

Powers & Abilities[]

Expert Swordsman: Reluctant to use his Zanpakutō's Shikai form, Hisagi has trained to become especially skilled at swordsmanship so he wouldn't have to rely on it. Despite being far less powerful than the likes of Hikone Ubuginu, he noted many flaws and openings in their technique, stating that he could have killed them in many instances while they were frantically attacking Hisagi in an attempt to defeat his Bankai.[3]

  • Kusarigamajutsu Master: While afraid of his Zanpakutō's Shikai, Hisagi is highly proficient in its use, using his mastery of a variation of Kusarigamajutsu. He demonstrates enough control of his scythes to negate Tokinada Tsunayashiro's attacks with Enrakyōten mimicking Suzumushi Nishiki: Benihikō, Ryūjin Jakka, and Senbonzakura, with the latter resulting in Tokinada's arm getting cut off in the same motion,[4] as well as consistently aim for Hikone's vital points without injuring them multiple times while the hybrid continued their assault on him.[3]

Enhanced Endurance: Hisagi possesses enough resilience and stamina to endure the pain of over one hundred "deaths"-- which included bisection, crushed organs, and being completely incinerated by Cero-- while under the effects of his Bankai without faltering, even after Hikone became sufficiently weakened and was forced to their knees.[3]

Zanpakutō[]

Kazeshini redirects here. For the manifested spirit that appears in the Zanpakutō Unknown Tales arc see Kazeshini (Zanpakutō spirit).

Kazeshini (風死, Wind of Death; Viz "Death Wind"): In its sealed form, Hisagi's sword looks like a regular katana with an octangular tsuba. Hisagi typically carries his Zanpakutō at his waist, but has on occasion carried it on his back.

  • Shikai: Kazeshini's Shikai command is "Reap" (刈れ, kare). When released, it takes the form of two Kusarigama-like weapons, each with two scythe blades, with one inverted, giving it the resemblance of a pinwheel. The blades are connected to a spiked rod tethered together by a long chain, which can extend to great lengths.[5] Due to this and the dual-type nature of Kazeshini's blades, Shunsui Kyōraku determines that the true essence of Kazeshini lies in the chain that connects them.[3]
Shikai Special Ability: Kazeshini as a whole represents the very definition of a Shinigami, with its chain representing life and the blades representing death. Thus, the chain of Kazeshini can restore any injury Hisagi receives-- even if his entire body is destroyed-- by instantly linking his body back together, as long as Hisagi still has sufficient Reiatsu.[3] Before this revelation, Kazeshini was the source of Hisagi's previous level of resilience, as shown in his training with Kensei and Mashiro Kuna, and even saved Hisagi from fatal wounds, such as when Lille Barro pierced his Saketsu and Hakusui,[6] a wound that previously instantly killed Ōetsu Nimaiya.[7]
Hisagi's Bankai CFYOW

Hisagi's Bankai, Fushi no Kōjō.

  • Bankai: Fushi no Kōjō (風死絞縄, Wind of Death Hangman's Noose): When activated, the chains of Kazeshini form a noose around Hisagi's neck that connects to a large black orb of entangled chains floating above him. These chains cannot be permanently destroyed, as they will simply regenerate. The Reishi around Fushi no Kōjō stagnates, and is said to replicate the conditions of the original world from millions of years ago.[3]
Bankai Special Ability: Fushi no Kōjō extends the life preservation of Kazeshini's chains to any opponent Hisagi chooses, connecting both fighters with a length of chain around their necks. Any injury either combatant sustains will be instantly healed at the cost of their combined Reiatsu, effectively equalizing the battlefield and allowing Hisagi to fight an opponent as powerful as Hikone Ubuginu.[3]

Weaknesses[]

Zanpakutō[]

Healing: Injuries that were already sustained before releasing Kazeshini are not healed.[3]

Pain Inducement: Although Kazeshini and Fushi no Kōjō can instantly heal inflicted wounds, they do not negate the pain produced by them. However, Hisagi can overcome this with sheer willpower.[3]

Reiatsu Limit (Bankai): As Fushi no Kōjō depletes both combatants' Reiatsu as they get injured, both Hisagi and his opponent will be killed if it is active for the final blow, requiring outside help for Hisagi to finish the fight.[3]
