131. The True Will

Momo tells Hitsugaya the contents of Aizen's letter and she begins attacking him.

Summary :

Cover of 131. The True Will

Hinamori tells Hitsugaya the letter that Aizen wrote for her. It explains that the reason why Rukia's execution date keeps moving up is not to actually execute her, but to have the seal on the Sōkyoku be lifted so it could be taken. The letter continues to explain that the Sōkyoku has the power of a million Zanpakutō and the power to defend against a million Zanpakutō, and that the person who wants to use this will destroy all of Soul Society. The letter than says that the person who wants to have the Sōkyoku's power is Tōshirō Hitsugaya.

Hitsugaya is shocked at this and can't believe that that's whats written on the letter. Hinamori continues to explain that at the end of the letter it says that Aizen was going to meet the conspirator and stop him and that if he were to fail Momo would have to be the one to kill him. Momo then immediately attacks Hitsugaya with all her force, but he easily dodges the attack. Hitsugaya tries to reason with Momo by telling her Aizen would never write something like that since he would never walk into a battle he wasn't sure he could win, nor would he ask a subordinate to take care of his problem. She isn't convinced, though, saying it was definitely his handwriting and begins to break down not believing in what she should do anymore.

Hitsugaya begins thinking to himself that someone must have forged the letter and comes to the realization that it must have been Ichimaru. He yells at Ichimaru, claiming this is all just another part of his plan and charges straight towards him. However, Hinamori tries to attack him again which forces Hitsugaya to knock her out. Ichimaru mockingly tells him that he shouldn't be so cruel to people. Hitsugaya questions Ichimaru as to what he's trying to accomplish exactly by making Hinamori go through so much pain to the point where her hands are bleeding by clutching her Zanpakutō so hard. He claims not to understand though and Hitsugaya reminds him of what he told him before, that if he were to cause Hinamori to shed even one drop of blood, he would kill him. Ichimaru tells him that that's no good and that he would be forced to fight him if he drew his Zanpakutō.

132. Creeping Limit

Hitsugaya releases his Zanpakutō to fight Gin while the execution date for Rukia is moved up.

Summary :

Before Hitsugaya and Ichimaru begin their fight, Ichimaru tells Kira to move back since he'll die if he stays too close. Hitsugaya says moving back isn't enough and that he'll have to be at least 7 square miles away from the place or he won't guarantee his safety. Hitsugaya then releases his Zanpakutō, Hyōrinmaru. Kira notes that it is a dragon of water and ice made of spiritual pressure that can control the weather and claims it's the strongest ice element Zanpakutō.

Hitsugaya attacks Ichimaru immediately, which ends up hurting Kira in the process. He eventually is able to freeze Ichimaru's left hand and is about to deliver the finishing blow. Before he can, though, Ichimaru releases his Zanpakutō, Shinsō, which increases his sword's length and nearly strikes Hitsugaya's eye. He is able to dodge it, but the Zanpakutō continues stretching straight towards Momo. Rangiku comes though and blocks the Zanpakutō at the last second. She tells Hitsugaya that she was going to go back, but once she sensed Hyōrinmaru's Reiatsu, she had to go back. She then tells Ichimaru to put his sword away or else she will be his opponent. Gin simply smiles at this.

Yoruichi is shown thinking to herself that only 2 days are left and while Ichigo's combat skills have improved, his Reiatsu has barely increased and wonders if he'll really be able to reach Bankai. She considers extending his training since 8 days will still be left before Rukia's execution after the 3 day training is over. She realizes it's dangerous though, since Urahara himself considered using this training method for more than 3 days to be too risky. She eventually comes to the conclusion that if his Reiatsu doesn't rise by the end of the day she will have to take the risk.

Meanwhile, Rukia is shown being told that her execution will be changed to tomorrow.

The date of Rukia's execution is moved up once again.

Summary :

133Cover

Hitsugaya thanks Matsumoto for saving Hinamori's life, as Hinamori herself lies unconscious. Matsumoto, whose forearms are bandaged, tells Hitsugaya not to worry about it, as she thinks back to the moment when Ichimaru finally withdrew his Zanpakutō. After retracting the blade of Shinsō, Ichimaru simply turns to leave. As Hitsugaya moves to stop him, Ichimaru suggests that rather then chasing him, Hitsugaya should take care of Hinamori before disappearing in a burst of Shunpo. Rangiku thinks back to their childhood and comments that Gin's bad habit of disappearing without telling her where he is going hasn't changed. Rangiku wonders where Gin wants to go this time. As Rangiku is lost in her thoughts, Hitsugaya is lost in his. He wonders how much of Aizen's letter was forged and wonders if the part about the power of the Sōkyoku being used to destroy Soul Society was true. Hitsugaya also wonders if that is what Ichimaru is planning. Both their thoughts are interrupted by the arrival of a Hell Butterfly that announces that Rukia's execution has been moved up once again and will now take place in just 29 hours. This prompts Hitsugaya into action, he tells Rangiku to follow him, saying that he will stop the execution in order to prevent Ichimaru from succeeding in his plan.

Meanwhile, Renji arrives at the location where Ichigo is training. A place he found by tracing Ichigo's Reiatsu. He enters the underground training area where Yoruichi watches Ichigo continue his training with Zangetsu. Yoruichi notes that Ichigo has not improved greatly, but his progress is steady. Still she wonders what is making her so uneasy, noting that she feels as if something ominous is approaching. As Yoruichi thinks this, Renji bursts in on them. He notes that Ichigo is training for Bankai, Renji asks if he can share the training ground and informs Ichigo that Rukia's execution date has been moved up yet again, and now it is on at noon tomorrow. Renji then calls forth the materialized spirit of Zabimaru and begins his own Bankai training. Yoruichi begins to panic, but Ichigo tells her not to worry. Saying that if Rukia's execution is tomorrow then he will finish his Bankai training today.

In the cell, Rukia decides that before she is executed, she will ask them to return Ichigo and the others to the living world. She believes that since she is from the Kuchiki family, they might honor her wishes. She goes on to say that while at first it was shocking to hear that the execution was tomorrow, she was not sad. She concludes that it was probably because of the dream she had last night, the dream about the night she will never forget. She then remembers clutching the body of Kaien Shiba.

Summary :

134Cover

Cover of 134. memories in the rain2 op.2 "Longing For Sanctuary"

Ukitake runs up to Byakuya to tell him that Rukia's execution is set for tomorrow, but he tells him he already knows. Ukitake says he'll get right to the point then, but Byakuya tells him he doesn't care and that he shouldn't annoy him with something as pointless as this. Ukitake yells at him to take this more seriously and ends up over exerting himself because of this. Byakuya tells him to take it easy, since this isn't the first time he lost a subordinate due to his own illness and that Rukia is a part of the Kuchiki family and that this shouldn't even concern him. Ukitake thinks to himself that in this situation Kaien would have done everything in his power to save Rukia.

Rukia is then shown being told that the lieutenant is going to come in soon. After hearing some people talk about her getting into the 13th Division due to her nobility, she has a flashback to when she first met Kaien.

Kaien introduces himself to Rukia, but due to her simple response to him, he yells at her to introduce herself and say "nice to meet you". Rukia does so which Kaien congratulates her for. He then welcomes her to the division and tells her that their captain is almost never around because of his illness and that she could call him captain if she'd like.

Rukia goes up to Byakuya and tells him she had a peaceful time at the division. Byakuya asks what seat she had gotten, but she disappointingly says with her ability she couldn't get one upon first joining. Byakuya then tells her she can leave.

Rukia is depressed after this and Kaien goes up to her asking her why she always has that face. To cheer her up, he hands her a drink and tells her as long as she's in this division he will protect her no matter what. A drunk Kiyone and Sentarō then appear saying that Kaien's words to her were so cool. Sentarō then tells Rukia that when he first joined, he was picked on by people too and that she should just ignore them. Kaien then says that breaks over and for everyone to return to their posts. Rukia then thinks to herself about Kaien's wife, Miyako, the third seat of the division and her idol.

Miyako is killed, though, along with her entire squad which Ukitake explains to Kaien. He continues to explain that the observational team was also killed so they know nothing about the enemy. He tells him that their going to form an assault squad that will be ready in two days, but Kaien doesn't care and goes out to kill the enemy. Before he does, though, Ukitake tells him they know two things about the enemy. The first is it stays in it's lair and hunts around a certain area. The other is the location of it's lair. Rukia, Ukitake, and Kaien go to the lair and find the Hollow.

Rukia tells Kaien that she's going to scout out its ability's first, but Kaien asks Ukitake for permission to fight it alone. He allows him to and Kaien goes and confronts the Hollow. He asks the Hollow how many Shinigami he's killed and if he felt regret about killing them. The Hollow says that he actually does regret it, especially the female Shinigami he ate, but only because he didn't eat their entire bodies. Kaien then attacks the Hollow and grabs one of the tentacles growing out of it. His Zanpakutō breaks and the Hollow explains that that's what happens to the first Shinigami who touches his tentacles each night. The Hollow then counterattacks and Kaien questions how it could have such an ability.

Rukia attempts to help Kaien, but Ukitake stops her explaining that while she will be able to save his life, she will also destroy his pride at the same time. Rukia tries to convince him to let her through by telling him Kaien's pride is meaningless compared to his own life. Ukitake explains that their are two types of fights, one for your life or one for your pride and that Kaien is fighting for the pride of his men, his wife, and himself.

Kaien decides to use Kidō to finish the Hollow off which forces the Hollow to use a technique on him that allows him to take over his body. Rukia calls over to him and a possessed Kaien looks over at her.

Summary :

136Cover

Cover of 136. memories in the rain2 op.4 "night of wijnruit"

The possessed Kaien makes fun of Rukia for continually saying his name and worrying about him so much. Kaien then says that if she likes him so much she should let him eat her and charges at her. Ukitake stops him though and yells at Rukia to run away. Kaien tells Ukitake that there is no way to get him out of this body, since what he did isn't actually possession, but the union of two spiritual forms. He then says that all he has to do now is eat the body from the inside for the night, and Ukitake responds by slashing at his neck and saying that he will simply cut him in half along with Kaien's body, since he doesn't want Kaien's body to become food for someone like him. Ukitake's illness starts acting up though which allows Kaien to counter attack. He doesn't though and goes straight past him.

Ukitake looks behind him and notices that Rukia's still around and yells at her for not running away. Kaien heads straight for Rukia and attempts to kill her, but she gains up enough courage to stab and kill him. Before dying Kaien returns to himself and thanks Ukitake for letting him fight alone. He then apologizes to Rukia for making her go through this and thanks her for doing what she did. Rukia believes though that everything she had done was only for herself and wasn't to actually help Kaien.

The flashback ends and Rukia thinks to herself that she doesn't deserve to be saved by anyone.

Cover of 137. Surrounding Clutch

Two Shinigami are shown arguing with each other, but are interrupted when Kenpachi charges straight towards them. They get scared and pretend to be happy about cleaning the street, but he just runs straight past them. Ikkaku, Yumichika, and Makizō run past too and tell them they better do a good job of cleaning up. The two Shinigami then notice two people on Kenpachi's back. Kenpachi asks Orihime which way to go next, but Yachiru interrupts them. Ikkaku says they should listen to Orihime and Yachiru gets mad at this. Kenpachi decides to go any direction he wants instead of listening to them.

Back in the cell, the Ryoka are being held in a butterfly comes in. Ishida is happy to see it, but Ganju just makes fun of him and the two start arguing. Chad tells them to be quiet because he hears something outside. All of a sudden, Kenpachi breaks in the cell to get them out.

Meanwhile, Renji asks Yoruichi if Ichigo will really be able to achieve Bankai in this short amount of time, but responds by saying she doesn't know. She tells him though that Ichigo has the instinct to be able to reach that level and says that he was born with the ability to acquire Bankai.

Rukia is then shown being dragged to her execution.

138. Individual Thoughts

The captains and lieutenants head to Sōkyoku hill while Kenpachi gets into a battle with the 9th and 7th Divisions.

Summary :

138Cover

Cover of 138. Individual Thoughts

In the 6th Division barrack, Byakuya is looking at something when someone tells him to prepare to go to the Sōkyoku. He then turns his back, telling to a person named Hisana that he's going. That person in the picture somewhat resembles Rukia. It's five hours before the execution.

In the 7th Division barrack, Tetsuzaemon Iba, the lieutenant is apologizing to his captain for falling asleep on the toilet. But his Captain, Sajin Komamura, says it's fine, he's prepared, Iba doesn't have to make excuses to give him more time. Iba denies it, but Komamura says that he knew Iba was worried about him and thought he was unsure about the legitimacy of this execution. Thus, to give Komamura enough time to think about it, Iba came here late purposefully. Iba confirms that's true. Komamura tells him that he has no doubt, his loyalty lies only in his debt to Genryūsai-sama. He took him in when Komamura was alone because people pushed him away due to his look. So he shall repay this debt even if it means he will be shattered to pieces. If his greatness says "yes", then even in death Komamura will says "yes". Then Komamura asks Kaname Tōsen, the 9th Division Captain, for his thought on this. He replies that he will stick with his way. The road that he chooses with his sightless eyes will be the road that's not dyed red with blood. He believes that he will be on the same path as Komamura.

In the 2nd Division barracks, someone is complaining that it's annoying how there are Ryoka and now a murder. And they're even arguing whether or not the execution is legit. Then he asks his captain if she thinks it's stupid. She replies that she has no interest whether is right or wrong, all she cares about is the execution order as a captain of the Gotei 13. All who get in her way are her enemies and must be slain That is all that matters. The arguers are the Captain and Lieutenant of the 2nd Division, Suì-Fēng and Marechiyo Ōmaeda. Suì-Fēng says that goes for Ōmaeda too, and he should not forget where his loyalty lies. If he gets in her way, he too, will becomes her enemy. Ōmaeda says that he will remember it.

In the 8th Division barrack rooftop, Kyōraku is lying, chewing a blade of grass when Nanao comes and tells him to go. He tells her that he has a problem and doesn't know what to do and asks her if she wants to hear about it. She asks him what is it, and he says that he got distressed and tried to relax by chewing this blade of grass, but he doesn't know if it's poisonous or something, his mouth got numb and he's dumbfounded. Nanao angrily takes it off him and tells his to throw it away. Kyōraku then asks her what should he do, and Nanao replies that no matter what she says, he will just do what he likes in the end. She tells him not to worry about her, since she will follow in a safe distance and will not get dragged into anything. Kyōraku says that's bad, since he will again be the only one getting scolded by Yamamoto. Meanwhile, all captains and lieutenants are heading to the Sōkyoku.

Kenpachi's group got lost. Ishida comments that they need lot of luck to find ways around here, and Orihime says that it's quite normal to run into dead ends every 10 to 20 meters. Ikkaku says that he knew it would happen and that's why he hates it when Yachiru leads. Suddenly, Yumichika senses something. He asks Kenpachi and he tells those people to come out, since hiding Reiatsu and stalking others aren't something that captains should do. Those people tells Kenpachi that he sure speaks with authority and asks if he knows what a foolish deed he's asking. Those people are the captains and lieutenants of the 7th and 9th Division. Tōsen asks where Kenpachi is taking the Ryoka to, and if he has lost his pride and righteousness when he lost that fight. Aramaki starts panicking because there are 4 captain-level people. Yumichika says that based on number they have the upper hand. However, Kenpachi told them to stop whimpering and says that no one told them that they are going to fight because four versus one is not even enough to test his sword with.

Summary :

139Cover

Cover of 139. Drowsy,Bloody,Crazy

The captains and lieutenants of the 7th and 9th Division asks Kenpachi if he's going to fight all of them alone. Komamura says that he knows of Kenpachi's strength, but he's thinking too highly of himself. Kenpachi tells him that he's noisy, and they should just come on and fight already. It's best if all four of them come together because if they all surround him and attack at once then maybe one of they will actually wounded him. Aramaki asks Kenpachi what should they do, which Kenpachi replies that he should shut up and go away. Yachiru says that was bad and calls Aramaki "mustache guy", and states that when Kenpachi is excited, no one shouldn't disturb him. Yachiru tells Kenpachi that they will go search for Ichigo first and he should catch up with them soon. Kenpachi says that he will be right there. Yachiru then tells "big booby", "big bear", "wrestler guy", "pencil guy", and "mustache guy" to go. Then she pulls Orihime away with the others. Tōsen asks if Kenpachi is taunting them or he really thinks that's possible when he said that he will "be right there". Either way, it seems that Kenpachi didn't merely lose his pride, he seems to have lost all common sense. Kenpachi laughs, saying that he never had worthless things like "common sense."

Orihime asks Yachiru if it's okay to leave Kenpachi behind like that. Yachiru says that it's fine because no matter who the opponents are, Kenpachi will never lose. Aramaki is thinking that Orihime keeps calling Yachiru by her first name and she really has no fear, then he turns back to asks what Ikkaku thinks about it, only to realizes that Ikkaku and Yumichika is gone.

Back at fight, Iba and Hisagi ask the captains to let them go first. Kenpachi tells them that they look down on him and they should all come at once. But suddenly Yumichika and Ikkaku appear, telling Iba and Hisagi that they're just lieutenants, their captain won't want to bother fighting them, so Ikkaku and Yumichika are more than enough to deal with them, completely ignoring Kenpachi's request for not leaving with the others. Kenpachi tells them that they can have Iba and Hisagi, but fight elsewhere since if they get in his way, he will chop them up first. Iba tells Ikkaku that his insulting loud mouth really got sharper since the last time they met. Ikkaku says that getting scolded by someone who left their division just because he couldn't become lieutenant is really unjust. Ikkaku then tells Iba to get out of here first, since he doesn't want to be chopped up by his captain. Yumichika tells Hisagi the same thing, which he says that makes no difference. And then they move away. Kenpachi says that they can finally fight happily. Even though the number got cut in half, it was a request from his men, he has to honor it as their captain, but now at least, it's still good enough for a morning exercise. Komamura tells Kenpachi that he's really, really thinking too highly of himself. He unsheathes his sword and destroys the ground with the Reiatsu from his sword, which Kenpachi comments that's not bad. Komamura tells Kenpachi to die, then attacks him with his Shikai, which also destroys most of the building. Tōsen tells Komamura to takes two steps back because Kenpachi may lunge out and attack. Tōsen then release his second Shikai, Benihikō, which destroys the whole building. Komamura says that's it's over, even if he's Zaraki Kenpachi, he should be shattered to pieces. But when the smoke is cleared, Tōsen is shocked by seeing Kenpachi standing still in the middle of the blade from his Shikai, still smiling. Then he asks what's over. Komamura is shocked and believed that is impossible how Kenpachi survived getting hit by his Tenken and Tōsen's Benihikō, but is still standing there like nothing happened. Kenpachi pulls the blade out of his shoulder and says that he takes back what he said, now saying that this won't even help him warm up.

Meanwhile, Renji is running towards the Sōkyoku, thinking that he's going to save Rukia, and doesn't notice that Byakuya is following him.

Author's Notes

Volume 16 Intro Image
The new workspace I moved into last year is a bit small, but at dawn, when I open the front door after work, I can see the sunrise. The sky lights up like a fiery rainbow. Lately I've been working until sunrise just to catch the sky. It's not that I have to work all night because I sleep till noon every day. I mean, just look at that sunrise.
