Restrained by Omaeda

Ōmaeda restrains Kenryū and Enryū.

Ōmaeda arrives along with Suì-Fēng to stop Ichigo when he breaks into Soul Society, but is quickly defeated by Enryū when he releases his Zanpakutō. However, he and the rest of the 2nd Division eventually manage to capture Enryū and Kenryū and try to search for Ichigo and Rukia when they get away with Shū Kannogi. They later resurface, with Shū as an apparent hostage. Ichigo warns the 2nd Division to not try to follow them as they get away once again.[4]

Marechiyo continues to assist the 2nd Division to search for Ichigo and Rukia until Renji Abarai shows Makoto Kibune's Bakkōtō to Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto, which causes the Captain-Commander to call off the pursuit of Ichigo and Rukia, and instead orders the Gotei 13 to seize the Kasumiōji Manor.[5]

Ōmaeda is walking with Captain Suì-Fēng down the hall of the 2nd Division Headquarters when they are presented with a Hell Butterfly that relays a message for them to attend a meeting. He shortly arrives with the others who are called to the meeting and is somewhat confused as is everyone else. When a mysterious stranger shows up and reveals that he has released each Shinigami's Zanpakutō Spirit from their subjugation, he proves his power and calls them all to his side. Ōmaeda is surprised to see Gegetsuburi true form among them.[6]

Ep237 Omeada Gegetsuburi

Ōmaeda and Gegetsuburi meet.

Ōmaeda is among the Shinigami who resolve to attack Muramasa and the Zanpakutō Spirits after they learn that the intruder has sealed Captain-Commander Yamamoto. He and other Shinigami scatter when they see Konjiki Ashisogi Jizō come out and sprays his poison all over the area.[7] He later volunteers to lead several 2nd Division Shinigami to search the records for a Zanpakutō named Muramasa, although he still complains about having to do it. At the entrance to the archives, he stumbles upon the body of an unconscious Shinigami guard, who was left there by Captain Byakuya Kuchiki. While he is still puzzled by this phenomenon his men are attacked by Gegetsuburi and Hōzukimaru.[8]

Ōmaeda quickly recognizes Gegetsuburi and the two exchange pleasantries and insults. Once Gegetsuburi takes offense he materializes his flail, to which Ōmaeda draws his sword, saying he will force Gegetsuburi to submit to him. The two are sizing each other up and the battle is about to commence when a large piece of wall, blown away by Ichigo Kurosaki, hits Ōmaeda and sends him flying through another wall, effectively knocking him out. It is in this condition that he is found later by his men, and although Suì-Fēng tells them they can "just dump him somewhere", it is most probable he was evacuated to the 4th Division barracks for treatment.[8]

Gegetsuburi tied

Marechiyo confronts Mayuri over his attempt to dissect Gegetsuburi.

He later goes to Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi's lab, and is visibly upset at the sight of a bound and gagged Gegetsuburi. Mayuri informs him that he intends to dissect Gegetsuburi in an attempt to find the source of the rebellion. Ōmaeda begs the captain to wait, arguing that his is the only Zanpakutō they have and that they should be careful with it. Annoyed by the interruptions, the captain calls for his lieutenant, who responds by attacking Ōmaeda. Evading her attack, Ōmaeda reminds her that her target isn't him, but his Zanpakutō. Gegetsuburi, angered, tries to speak through his gag, but Ōmaeda understands him perfectly, which Mayuri interprets as telepathy between the Zanpakutō and its wielder. Ōmaeda suggests this as the new focus of the research, but Mayuri disagrees, ordering Nemu to take the sample. After the sample is taken, Gegetsuburi is visibly lifeless. Ōmaeda wants to know how Mayuri intends to compensate him for the loss of his Zanpakutō. Mayuri, ignoring Ōmaeda's complaint, replies that Zanpakutō return to normal if defeated by their owner, but not if defeated by anyone else. Ōmaeda attempts to regain Mayuri's attention, but is forcibly removed from the lab by Nemu.[9]

Much to his joy, Gegetsuburi is revived and once again his partner. The two then join the fight against Muramasa in the Human World.[10] However, instead of joining their allies in actually fighting the assault of Gillians, Ōmaeda and Gegetsuburi begin arguing about how their partnership should work in terms how they address each other. They later join their allies in using their combined Reiatsu to close the huge Garganta Muramasa produced.[11] After defeating the remaining Gillians, Ichigo emerges from the destroyed dome with a defeated Muramasa.[12]

Beast Swords arc[]

After the events involving Muramasa and the Zanpakutō rebellion, Ōmaeda goes about relaxing. Both he and Gegetsuburi cook and eat barbecue meat after Zabimaru and Senbonzakura accidentally discover 12th Division's secret surveillance system of all of Seireitei in the Shinigami Research and Development Institute. The two unexpectedly are burnt by the barbecue machine when Senbonzakura causes a number of technology malfunctions in an attempt to shut down the surveillance system. Ōmaeda, along with a number of other officers of the Gotei 13 and their Zanpakutō, then appear to confront both Zabimaru and Senbonzakura when they accidentally destroy the buildings of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute.[13]

Marechiyo flees from his Reigai

Marechiyo flees from his Reigai counterpart.

Marechiyo appears with other members of the Gotei 13 in the Human World as they escape the Dangai and fend off Kagerōza Inaba.[14] After fending off Inaba and forcing him to retreat, Marechiyo joins other members of the Gotei 13 as they hold a meeting in Ichigo's room. He then relaxes at the barbecue as the day comes to an end.[15]Later, Marechiyo and a group of Shinigami confront their Reigai counterparts in a forest clearing, proceeding to fight against a modified version of himself. Initially he is overpowered due to the Reigai wielding a far-larger variant of Gegetsuburi, but after exploiting the Reigai's dependency upon his enhanced powers, Marechiyo is victorious. However, the Reigai attempts a last-resort attack upon Marechiyo, which causes him to become unconscious alongside the other Shinigami. His injuries are then tended to by Uryū Ishida.[16]

Marechiyo participates in a meeting in Ichigo's room, where he listens to Nanao Ise reporting on the situation in Soul Society. Marechiyo asks if they really think the captains are dead, provoking an angry response from Ikkaku. When he asks where they are if they are not dead, Ikkaku threatens to kill him. Later, when the Reigai of Kenpachi Zaraki breaks out of Urahara's trap and arrives in the Human World, Marechiyo and the other lieutenants arrive to help Ikkaku fight him. However, Ikkaku dismisses then, saying that they have their own opponents. When more Reigai arrive, Marechiyo leaves to fight the new arrivals.[17] He ends up fighting the Reigai-Byakuya. Despite his effort, the captain Reigai easily proves to be too powerful. After he begs and attempts to bribe the Reigai, Marechiyo is struck down by Reigai-Byakuya.[18]

Once healed, he joins the lieutenants in Soul Society to fight the Reigai with the captains.[19] Despite evening out the numbers, the Reigai continue to pressure Marechiyo and other the Shinigami.[20]
