Guhl and Günther

Guhl (グール, Gūru) and Günther (ギュンター, Gyuntā) are the respective Dolls of the twin Bount Hō and Ban.[1]

Appearance[]

Uniquely, when summoned, Guhl and Günther do not materialize consistent, solid bodies; instead, they summon and manipulate large quantities of water from the surrounding area to create forms for themselves, usually comprising medium-sized spheres of water atop stalk-like tendrils rising from water on the floor.[1] Additionally, Guhl and Günther can merge their respective water bodies to create an even larger, bulbous entity when there is sufficient water available, such as when it is raining, or travel through the air in small spheres of water without stalks when they do not have as much water available to them.[2] Their crest takes the form of plastic bottle caps kept on bottles of water stored on the back of Ban's right hip; to summon Guhl and Günther, Hō and Ban pour out the water and drop the caps into the pool, allowing Guhl and Günther to create their liquid bodies around the respective caps.[1]

Personality[]

Though unable to speak or emote, Guhl and Günther are loyal to Hō and Ban, to the point that they will even take orders from the twin who is not their master when necessary. They are also readily willing to harm and kill people;[1] according to Ban, Guhl and Günther wanted to display the true extent of their powers and viciously end the lives of Ichigo Kurosaki and his friends during their battle. However, when one of the twins is incapacitated to the point of being rendered unconscious, Guhl and Günther will not listen to orders from the remaining twin as readily or frequently, even if that twin is their master, and will even respond to potentially lethal attacks by simply remaining still no matter how much they are ordered to move.[1]

Plot[]

Bount arc (anime only)[]

Ep72SinkOverflowing

Guhl and Günther overflow the sink with water.

When Hō and Ban are sent to Karakura Hospital in order to capture Uryū Ishida, they send Guhl and Günther to quietly infiltrate the area while remaining hidden themselves, where they sneak into Uryū's hospital room in the form of a dripping water tap that begins to annoy an irritated Rukia Kuchiki. With her efforts to turn off the faucet proving pointless as the Dolls cause the water to flow even faster and the sink begins to overflow, 6th Division Lieutenant Renji Abarai prevents it from flooding the floor with a bucket and basin, but they soon discover that the bathroom has been completely flooded when Guhl and Günther begin pouring water out of other sources.[1]

Ep72SadoHitsWater

Guhl attacks Uryū Ishida by engulfing him in water.

Suddenly, Guhl emerge from the water and hurtles toward Uryū, who is sitting injured on the room's bed, before engulfing him in water and attempting to drown him. As Yasutora Sado tries and fails to free Uryū with his bare hands, Ichigo Kurosaki enters his Shinigami and slashes through the water with his Shikai, Zangetsu, causing it to disperse and freeing Uryū. Upon being attacked with the sphere of water containing the cap of Günther, Ichigo cuts it in two, leaving the cap to fall to the ground in a puddle of water, only for Günther to soon reform its body and continue attacking the group, who are forced to leave the room in search of an escape route.[1]

Ep72DollsAppear

Guhl and Günther continue their pursuit.

Though Ichigo and his friends do their best to plug the gaps in the door behind them, Guhl and Günther simply move through the pipes in the walls to continue their assault. Emerging from a water fountain in front of Ichigo's group, Guhl attempts to attack Sado and is thwarted by Renji, but Günther creates an opening by attacking Ichigo, allowing Guhl to engulf both Uryū and Sado and attempt to drown them. After Ichigo and Renji fail to free the two of them long enough to provide an escape opportunity, since Guhl and Günther simply reform from their slashes and take each other's place, Rukia succeeds in dispersing the water with Hadō #31. Shakkahō.[1]

Ep72FloodingHospital

Guhl and Günther flood the hospital floor.

While Ichigo and his friends rush around to find the hospital's elevators in order to get to the ground floor and escape, Guhl and Günther begin turning on the water faucets in the other rooms of the hospital while Hō and Ban confront the group at the elevator doors and summon both Guhl and Günther once more, resulting in the group fleeing again and eventually reaching another set of elevators. However, Guhl and Günther succeed in flooding the elevator shaft using one of the water tanks on the roof, and with Rukia and Renji failing to disperse the resulting flood with Hadō #31. Shakkahō, Ichigo resorts to detonating a canister of compressed oxygen with a lighter.[1]

Ep73GuhlGüntherCombine

Guhl and Günther combine to form a larger being.

Despite being set back by the resulting explosion evaporating all the water in the surrounding area, Guhl and Günther flood other areas of the hospital and attack the group once more. Ichigo and Renji let their friends use the elevator as they hold the water back, soon tiring due to Guhl and Günther simply reforming themselves from each attack, and eventually flee down the elevator shaft, only for Guhl and Günther to move outside as well, where it is now raining.[1] Empowered by the rainfall, Guhl and Günther reform in the parking lot and merge their forms together at Hō and Ban's command to create an even larger body of water, to the despair of Ichigo's group.[2]

Ep73RukiaTriesToEscape

Rukia tries to escape from Guhl and Günther.

As Orihime Inoue and Sado flee with Uryū, Guhl and Günther are engaged by Ichigo, Rukia, and Renji, whom they easily overwhelm by trapping them in vast, pressurized, swirling tendrils of water, which leaves them incapacitated and struggling to breathe. With Rukia failing to free herself with Hadō #31. Shakkahō and Ichigo's slashes proving ineffective, Guhl and Günther only cease their assault when Hō and Ban realize that Uryū will get away if they remain in the parking lot, leading Guhl and Günther to leave the area in pursuit of Uryū and release Ichigo, Rukia, and Renji in the process. Soon afterward, Guhl and Günther catch up to Orihime and Sado.[2]

Ep73GuhlGrabsUryū

Guhl captures Uryū again in the factory.

Guhl and Günther proceed to relentlessly attack both Orihime and Sado, the former of whom finds her Santen Kesshun unable to protect against their projectiles. Though Sado's energy blasts with Brazo Derecha de Gigante initially do no lasting harm to Guhl and Günther, his attacks aimed at Hō and Ban separate them from each other, causing Guhl and Günther to collapse and creating an opportunity for Sado and Orihime to flee with Uryū. Eventually, Guhl and Günther find them in an abandoned factory, where Günther ambushes and attacks the group while Guhl takes advantage of the distraction to Uryū.[2]

Ep73HōAndBanAttack

Guhl and Günther attempt to kill the group.

After Hō threatens to have Guhl kill Uryū if his friends try to attack, Ichigo and the others arrive as well, leading Ban to assert that Guhl and Günther are eager to display their true strength and kill the group. Guhl and Günther engulf the faces of Uryū's friends in spheres of water in order to infiltrate their bodies through their noses and mouths, where they begin tearing Ichigo and his friends apart from the inside out, causing them immense pain and leaving them incapacitated. However, Noba intervenes by teleporting Ban away from Hō, creating enough distance between them to destabilize Guhl and Günther, whose technique is weakened in strength.[2]

Ep73GuhlAndGüntherDie

Guhl and Günther are destroyed by the firework.

When Ban is knocked unconscious when Noba drops him from a great height, Günther loses its form, with the water collapsing on top of Hō, causing the technique to cease as well. As Hō rushes to Ban's side, Ichigo attacks Guhl and forces him to release Uryū before Hō decides to continue the battle alone. Though Guhl continues attacking the group at Hō's insistence with some delay, Ganju Shiba quickly arrives and detonates a special firework within the water sphere containing the crest of Guhl, evaporating the water and setting the cap on fire with the sparks. Consequently, Guhl and Günther die from the crest's destruction, with Hō and Ban following suit.[2]

Powers & Abilities[]

WaterManipulation

Guhl and Günther manipulate water across Karakura Hospital.

Water Manipulation: The primary ability of Guhl and Günther is their ability to manipulate the water contained in their bottles as well as any from the environment around them, such as stored water[1] and rainwater, which also empowers them when used.[2] They can travel through pipes in buildings and remotely active water-based appliances across a wide area, allowing them to surprise and overwhelm opponents. Additionally, because their bodies are comprised almost entirely of water aside from their individual crests, Guhl and Günther can easily reform from the damage inflicted by most attacks simply by filling the gap left by each strike with water, making them extremely difficult to fight or slow down.[1] The fluid nature of their bodies also allows them to merge, creating an even stronger entity and increasing the power of their attacks.[2] They can use water for multiple different offensive techniques:

  • Water Projectiles: Using their gathered water, Guhl and Günther can fire variously-sized and -shaped projectiles at their enemies simultaneously, usually in the form of medium-sized spheres and long, coiling tendrils. Though these projectiles are rendered harmless if cut through, their main purpose is to divide the enemies of Guhl and Günther and put them on the defensive in battle.[1][2]
Ep73GroupCaughtInWater

Guhl and Günther try to drown Ichigo Kurosaki and his friends.

  • Localized Drowning: Guhl and Günther can completely engulf an enemy within their water bodies, cutting off their access to air with the intention of causing them to lose consciousness or even killing them by filling their lungs with water.[1] While combined, Guhl and Günther can capture several individuals at once using this technique, with their inability to be substantially harmed preventing most methods of escape from within.[2]
  • Body Infiltration: Guhl and Günther cover the faces of their targets with medium-sized spheres of water that proceed to infiltrate their bodies through their mouths and noses; from here, Guhl and Günther will begin tearing their bodies apart from the inside out, causing the victims to shimmer with blue light across their bodies and collapse in immense pain that leaves them unable to move.[2]

Mental Synchronization: Guhl and Günther are usually controlled mentally by their respective masters, Hō and Ban, but the two of them can control each other's Doll if needed, uniquely among the Bount.[2]

Weaknesses[]

Heat: Though Guhl and Günther can quickly reform from gaps left by slashing and blunt projectile attacks, any heat- or fire-based attacks will evaporate the water it hits, temporarily hindering the Dolls, though higher amounts of water require larger attacks to effectively counter.[1][2]
