Yumichika Ayasegawa vs. Ganju Shiba is a battle between 5th Seat Yumichika Ayasegawa and Ganju Shiba. After Ichigo and Ganju arrive in Seireitei, they encounter Ikkaku Madarame and Yumichika Ayasegawa. Sensing their Reiatsu, Ganju opts for a hasty retreat but Ichigo refuses. They get into a brief argument and so Ganju leaves without him, but Yumichika immediately gives chase.[1]
Battle
Most of the battle goes with Yumichika chasing after Ganju (in a cat and mouse fashion). After Ganju ran away, he is chased around before coming upon a deadend. Ganju then uses his Stone Wave Magic (石波, seppa) to make a hole in the wall. Yumichika takes note of this and deducts that Ganju must have been the one who made the sand pit that he had found Ganju in. As Ganju runs through the hole, he almost falls into a pit. Yumichika catches up to Ganju and explains that the pit used to be used for executions where criminals were forced to fight Hollows while Shinigami watched as spectators. Ganju comments on the cruelty of Shinigami hobbies to which Yumichika retorts with an insult on Ganju's face and that practice was ended long ago. As Yumichika draws his blade, he asks Ganju about what death he would choice (dying by jumping into the pit or by Yumichika's hand). Yumichika tells Ganju to turn so he can see how ugly he can get as he cannot stand when people do not know what to do when facing a life-death situation. Ganju replies back by saying Yumichika's dislike was what he meant when calling Shinigami hobbies cruel[2]
As the standoff between Ganju and Yumichika continues, Yumichika comments on the noise from the fight between Ichigo and Ikkaku. Ganju is rather injured despite having drawn his Zanpakutō. Yumichikas then prepares to finish off Ganju by releasing his Shikai: Fuji Kujaku. Amused at the notion that Yumichika believes that he would try to stop him, Ganju tells that Yumichika is too hasty as he unleashes a pepper and smoke bomb only to be caught in it himself. Ganju quickly proceeds to running away again[3]
Though Ganju manages to evade Yumichika for quite some time, it looks as though he finally cornered. Yumichika applauds Ganju's toughness despite being "ugly." The two converse briefly on Ichigo's running around and screaming of Ganju's name. Yumichika remarks that Ichigo is as "ugly" as Ganju in searching for Ganju in such a loud manner that attracts other Shinigami and wonders if Ichigo has any sense. Ganju retorts back, stating that Ichigo must have defeated Yumichika's partner if he could run around searching for him. Yumichika express his shock at such a possibility and prepares to make a move but is interrupted mid-sentence when Ganju tosses fireworks at Yumichika's face. Ganju resumes running away one more time and then launches a number of fireworks with his Senpen Banka technique. The attack is rendered moot as Yumichika easily cuts the fireworks and uses Shunpo to land a kick on Ganju. Yumichika asks if Ganju was planning to destroy the ground so that both of them would die to which Ganju questions on why he would do that. As Ganju dodges a slash by Yumichika, Ganju thinks to himself on how his plan is almost ready but he would need to catch Yumichika off-guard. Yumichika then compliments Ganju's stamina and laments the fact that he might have spared Ganju if he was less ugly. Yumichika uses his Shunpo again and is able to land a blow on Ganju that causes Ganju to hang on the edge of a pit. As Yumichika prepares to finish the battle, Ganju surprises him by destroying the ground that he was standing on. Yumichika is then hanging on the edge and Ganju gets out by using Yumichika's head to climb out. Yumichika does climb out but Ganju unleashes his Renkan Seppa Shen that sends Yumichika falling in. Yumichika quickly jumps high into the air, searching for him. Ganju attracts Yumichika's attention to his location and finally manages to defeat Yumichika by throwing a powerful firework at him.[4]
Aftermath
Ganju is able to successfully retreat and regroup with Ichigo. It is later revealed that Yumichika easily recovered and that the bomb merely ruined his hair.[5]
