GATE OF THE SUN is the thirty-third episode of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War and the three hundred and ninety-ninth episode of the Bleach anime overall.
The Shinigami and Arrancar invading Wahrwelt find themselves confronted by the Schutzstaffel.
Summary[]
With the castle of Wahrwelt being raised on its central platform and bearing Silbern, the five Schutzstaffel stand atop the tower behind the latter, where the nearby Gate of the Sun begins rotating as Yhwach addresses Sternritter "X" Lille Barro, who looks at his Quincy Cross; "M" Gerard Valkyrie, who proudly holds his fist to his chest; "C" Pernida Parnkgjas, whose glowing dots reform into a Quincy Cross underneath its hood; "D" Askin Nakk Le Vaar, who smirks and adjusts his hair; and "A" Uryū Ishida, who lets his Quincy Cross dangle from his hand with a neutral expression.
Moments prior, Yhwach instructs the Schutzstaffel and Sternritter "B" Jugram Haschwalth to give the Shinigami who have invaded Wahrwelt a warm welcome so their blood can be poured into a chalice and toasted to the birth of the new world. In the present, with the Schutzstaffel affirming this, the Gates of the Sun underneath their feet teleport them across Wahrwelt to meet the invaders. Meanwhile, in the city below, Kisuke Urahara comments on how large the castle is, which prompts Captain-Commander Shunsui Kyōraku to muse that castles are meant to display someone's strength against their enemies.
After observing that the Wandenreich is clearly beckoning them and it would be rude to keep them waiting, Shunsui turns to Sternritter "H" Bazz-B, "G" Liltotto Lamperd, and "Z" Giselle Gewelle, the former of whom asserts that they do not intend to take orders from or work with Shunsui because this is where they part ways. Admitting that he expected as much, Shunsui turns to the assembled captains, lieutenants, and Visored, whom he orders to head out with him as they begin running toward the castle. On a different path, Yoruichi Shihōin notices the collective Reiatsu of the group heading to the castle and informs Ichigo Kurosaki of this.
Standing alongside Orihime Inoue, Yasutora Sado, Ganju Shiba, Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck, and Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez, Ichigo asserts that they should go too, which everyone except for Grimmjow agrees with, and runs off while Grimmjow watches. During this, Urahara realizes that he cannot see 12th Division Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi among their group, which Shunsui is puzzled by. On the city of Vier Ast, the gate opens once more and Mayuri passes through it alongside his lieutenant, Nemu Kurotsuchi, as he gleefully comments on how easy it is to get away from everyone by reopening the gate after repositioning the coordinates.
Mayuri notes that the others must be panicking now that they have realized he is not with them and proclaims that he will be able to test the results of his research as much as he wants without being bothered by them, but is shocked when 11th Division Captain Kenpachi Zaraki walks through the gate behind him and concurs with this. When Mayuri demands to know why he is here, Kenpachi explains that the others left while he was using the bathroom and admits that it is good for Mayuri to have reopened the gate when he did. With Kenpachi looking to him for agreement, 4th Division 7th Seat Hanatarō Yamada weakly affirms this.
While Hanatarō laments going to the bathroom when he did between 11th Division 3rd Seat Ikkaku Madarame and 5th Seat Yumichika Ayasegawa, Kenpachi declares that this works out because he does not have to worry about cutting down any allies, which will let him go all-out, and sneeringly asserts that Mayuri will not die easily even if Kenpachi cuts him. In turn, Mayuri counters that it is the perfect time to exterminate some pests now that the others are not around, and with the two of them glaring at each other, Hanatarō continues to lament his timing as Yumichika tells him to not cry and Ikkaku promises to leave him behind if he lags here.
After Nemu informs Hanatarō that she does not feel anything when he inquires about how she feels about this, Kenpachi runs off with Ikkaku, Yumichika, and Hanatarō as Mayuri follows seconds later with Nemu. Elsewhere, as she and her friends run through the streets with Nelliel and Grimmjow flanking them on the adjoining rooftops, Orihime expresses a desire to meet up with 13th Division Lieutenant Rukia Kuchiki and 6th Division Lieutenant Renji Abarai, leading Ichigo to muse that they cannot create Reishi footholds or contact their allies with a Denreishinki, leaving them no choice but to fight alone until they can meet up on foot.
Sado points out that the two groups being after the same enemy means they will meet up ahead, and though Yoruichi confirms this, a scoffing Grimmjow points out that they will become less mobile if they gather more people and that this will hamper their survivability while flipping over obstructions on the roof. With Grimmjow deciding to go on ahead because he is wasting his time here, Ichigo notices that one of the enemy is ahead as Askin stands on a rooftop at the end of the street and complains about having to deal with Ichigo's group, only to be caught off-guard when Grimmjow leaps into the air and crashes down with enough force to destroy the building.
While Ichigo curses Grimmjow for making the first move, in another city, Gerard skids to a halt just before the edge of the platform and deduces that there is no one else around, including enemies, before loudly demanding that the Shinigami come and attack him all at once. Meanwhile, on the central platform, Bazz-B, Liltotto, and Giselle stand on rooftops overlooking Silbern, where Liltotto notes that they managed to get close despite the changed landscape and Giselle announces their return as Bazz-B swears revenge on Yhwach and Sternritter "B" Jugram Haschwalth. Back in the street, Grimmjow stands atop the rubble of the building and casually states that one enemy is down.
When Ichigo questions why he is charging in alone, an irate Grimmjow begins to counter that he does not take orders from Ichigo, only to be interrupted when an unharmed Askin rises out of the rubble behind him and begins frantically running away, leaving Ichigo nonplussed at Grimmjow letting the enemy escape and Grimmjow ordering him to shut up prior to chasing after Askin. In response to Grimmjow telling him to stop, Askin claims he will do so only if Grimmjow promises to not kill him, and when Grimmjow explains that Askin will simply end up dead if he is weaker without any killing intent involved, Askin asserts that he knew Grimmjow would say this.
With Askin steadfastly refusing to stop running now, Grimmjow wonders why he is running if he is here to fight, prompting Askin to clarify that he is here to kill the invaders rather than fight and would rather do so sneakily than head-on. Rounding a corner with Grimmjow still in pursuit, Askin inquires about who he is since he was not with Ichigo's group earlier. In turn, Grimmjow identifies himself as Ichigo's enemy and reacts to Askin offering to team up with him to kill Ichigo together by criticizing him for never shutting up and deciding to just hunt Askin down before transforming his hands into those of his Resurrección, Pantera.
Having had his speed boosted by this, Grimmjow begins closing in on a worried Askin and disappears from the view of Ichigo and his friends, who are left panting in exhaustion in a pavilion. As Ichigo laments having completely lost sight of Grimmjow and Askin, Ganju admits that he did not expect them to run that fast prior to Ichigo telling his friends to split up so they can look for Grimmjow. From a nearby rooftop, Askin peers over the edge to watch this and sighs in relief at having escaped Ichigo's group and Grimmjow. However, as he pours café au lait out of a thermos for a short break, Askin realizes Grimmjow is standing behind him and quickly flees again.
Grimmjow asserts that Askin is not getting away again, but after begging Grimmjow to overlook it this once, to the former's aggravation, Askin decides to give him a gift and throws back a Gift Ball, which Grimmjow cuts through with his re-transformed hands and refuses to fall for. Suddenly, with the pieces of the Gift Ball exploding in his face, Grimmjow's eyes widen in shock and he finds himself unable to move while tripping over the ground and rapidly spinning in the air before collapsing, where Askin reveals that he gave Grimmjow a ball laced with poison and mocks him for not being taught to avoid accepting gifts from strangers as a child.
During this, Lille adjusts a dial on his Spirit Weapon, Diagramm, and looks through the scope at the various Shinigami captains and lieutenants running down the street. Observing that the group is slowly breaking up due to each individual's stamina, ability to adapt to the Reishi-dense environment of the Soul King Palace, and preexisting injuries, Lille focuses on 9th Division Lieutenant Shūhei Hisagi, inhales, and fires a Heilig Pfeil through Hisagi's upper arms and chest, knocking him down and leaving a large hole running through his torso from the side as the others stop and turn back to look at him in shock.
With 2nd Division Lieutenant Marechiyo Ōmaeda and 13th Division 3rd Seat Kiyone Kotetsu rushing back to help Hisagi as the others continue running ahead, Lille muses that all living things die when they stray from the pack and fires another Heilig Pfeil through Marechiyo's left shoulder to down him before punching a hole through the center of a stunned Kiyone's chest, which causes Shunsui to realize they are being targeted. Ordered by Shunsui to keep moving and split up, the captains and lieutenants begin dispersing, though 4th Division Lieutenant Isane Kotetsu and 13th Division 3rd Seat Sentarō Kotsubaki are shot through when they run back to the wounded.
The rest of the captains and lieutenants split up among the buildings, and as Lille calls them sinful for believing that they can escape him, Renji is startled to find several regular Heilig Pfeil being fired at him by someone else on a different street. Slashing through the Heilig Pfeil with his sealed Zanpakutō, Renji looks up to see Uryū Ishida standing in the air with his Heilig Bogen formed while several captains and Rukia recognize his Reiatsu with alarm. After leaping between two buildings several times to get up to Uryū, who readies another Heilig Pfeil, Renji releases his Shikai, Zabimaru, and extends it toward Uryū.
In response, Uryū fires the Heilig Pfeil just before the tip of Zabimaru can reach him, forcing Renji to whip his head around at the last second to evade it while the Heilig Pfeil destroys part of the building behind him. Looking back to Uryū with a scratch on his left cheek, a grinning Renji addresses him as a Quincy and wonders what is going on. Moments later, Renji stands on the ground across from Uryū and sarcastically compliments his new cape before inferring that Uryū did not come here to be Renji's guide. When Uryū states that the Shinigami have no future up ahead, Renji points out that he did not answer the question.
After clarifying that he is saying the Shinigami cannot defeat Yhwach now that the latter has absorbed all of the Soul King's power, to Renji's astonishment, Uryū declares that a new world made for the Quincy and Yhwach will begin from Wahrwelt and looks toward the main castle. In turn, Renji asks Uryū if he has come across Ichigo yet, and when Uryū reveals that he tried to kill Ichigo and will definitely do so next time once he takes Ichigo's stubbornness into account, an angered Renji decides that he has heard enough and rushes toward Uryū while proclaiming that he will smash both the castle and Yhwach to pieces.
Renji proceeds to dodge past two Heilig Pfeil from Uryū and let a third shatter over Zabimaru while perched on the side of a building prior to leaping above Uryū and coming down on him with an overhead slash, forcing Uryū to reinforce his Heilig Bogen with additional Reishi and block Zabimaru with it. Once he and Uryū clash twice more, producing enough force to shatter the fountain that they are standing on, Renji activates his Bankai, Sōō Zabimaru, leaving Uryū startled as the large simian arm, bone tail, and long wrist-mounted blade of the Bankai form around Renji in the aftermath of his explosive burst of Reiatsu.
With Uryū inquiring if this is a new Bankai, Renji initiates Zazekka, which serrates the blade on his arm and extends it toward Uryū, only to produce a powerful explosion upon impact that sends Uryū flying into the air even after he blocks it with his Heilig Bogen. Following up with Orochiō, Renji slams the extended blade into Uryū from the side and smashes him through a spire with another flick of the blade. Though Uryū is irritated by Renji's reliance on brute force and gets close enough on the ground to fire another Heilig Pfeil at him, Renji easily redirects it upward with his foot and moves back to a windowsill.
Countering that there is nothing wrong with this reliance, Renji attaches the blade to the end of his bone tail, heats it until it is glowing, and throws it at Uryū, who attempts to intercept it with a Heilig Pfeil but is surprised to see the blade disperse the Reishi comprising it without slowing down. After narrowly evading the red-hot blade, Uryū watches it pierce through the wall behind him and engulf the next three buildings in large explosions prior to moving high into the air and unleashing Licht Regen, which rains a hail of Heilig Pfeil on Renji and forces him to shield himself by extending Hihiō and holding the palm above his head.
Despite sustaining scratches from the few Heilig Pfeil that bypassed his defense, Renji stuns Uryū by moving Hihiō aside to reveal that he is largely unharmed and destroys the Heilig Pfeil embedded in Hihiō by swiping it against the ground, which ruptures the pavement and produces a shockwave that sends Uryū flying back through the air. Renji refuses to let Uryū get away and retracts the blade so that the snake head containing it can bite down on a brick flying through the air, which Renji slams hard into Uryū to send him hurtling down toward the ground prior to having the snake head catch up to and bite down on Uryū.
After pinning Uryū against the side of a building with enough force to crater it, Renji retracts the bone tail from the other end to pull himself over to Uryū, grins wildly, and punches Uryū with Hihiō hard enough to destroy several buildings behind him as Uryū is send crashing through them. Once Uryū falls to the ground at the end, Renji catches up to him, leaps into the air, and stabs his blade into Uryū's stomach to conclude his assault with Sōō Zabimaru, Zaga Teppō, which forms a large snake head out of burning energy that bites down onto Uryū engulfing him and the surrounding area in a massive explosion that obliterates the rubble.
However, in the clearing smoke, Renji is astonished to see Uryū unscathed due to the latter protecting his entire body with Blut Vene, and after lifting himself up to a standing position, Uryū inquires if Renji believed he was the only one who had become more powerful before activating his Quincy: Vollständig with a massive pillar of Reishi. With Haschwalth watching this from Silbern, Uryū stands with his wings formed, summons twelve flechette-shaped Heilig Pfeil, spreads them out, and arranges them in a circle to condense them into a thick Heilig Pfeil that he fires at Renji, who barely deflects it with Zazekka.
The Heilig Pfeil hurtles past Renji and into the open air surrounding Wahrwelt, leaving Renji to stare at the large, burning hole it left in a building prior to cursing at Uryū, who interrupts Renji's attempt to rush at him again by bombarding him with hundreds of flechette-shaped Heilig Pfeil. In turn, Renji shields himself with Hihiō and performs the vitarka mudrā, which Hihiō mirrors while its fur is shredded, leaving only its arm bones. Eventually, Renji is overwhelmed by the barrage and sent flying back, but as Uryū walks after him, Renji initiates Hihi Tenshō, which sprouts copies of Hihiō from the fur patches after they writhe on the ground.
With the massive arms grabbing, restraining, and covering Uryū, who is left only a small area between their fingers to see Renji through, Renji gets to his feet and notes that this should temporarily hold Uryū, who looks at him in shock, as he reveals that he apparently needs twenty seconds for his next technique and begins flaring his Reiatsu around his body. In the past, a panting and sweating Renji kneels before Ichibē Hyōsube, who muses that Renji is starting to get used to his new Bankai and explains that this is what it feels like to call its true name, though he points out that Renji was barely able to hold its form at all.
After Ichibē instructs him to pour even more Reiatsu into Zabimaru to actually defeat his enemy and avoid the technique being undone before it can be completed, Renji is aghast at it requiring more Reiatsu from him, leading Ichibē to clarify that it should take about twenty seconds of infusion from Renji at his current level of strength. In the present, Renji expands the bone tail of his Bankai into a form resembling Hihiō Zabimaru and grabs it with Hihiō to set up Sōō Zabimaru, Zagai Zekkō by spinning the bone tail around like a flail, wreathing it in flames, before throwing it at Uryū in a massive explosion that engulfs dozens of buildings.
Both Kenpachi and Mayuri notice the explosion and intense Reiatsu from their neighboring platform, and when Kenpachi comments on how the others are already fighting, Mayuri claims that he could not care less about a battle between two Reiatsu without a shred of intelligence and asserts that Kenpachi is one of them, though an unamused Kenpachi counters that one of the combatants must be very intelligent and interesting. Pondering this, Mayuri observes that they should reach the throne room before anyone else if no one confronts them along the way and asks Kenpachi if he would rather waste time, to Kenpachi's consternation.
Elsewhere, Askin stands over Grimmjow and reminds him of Askin's offer to team up and kill Ichigo together, which would have most likely kept Grimmjow alive at the end. When Grimmjow vows to kill both him and Ichigo, Askin admits that he probably would have spared Grimmjow if he had begged for his life and concludes that his words continue to be fatal, only for Ichigo to refute this and step in behind Askin with the larger sword of his Shikai, Zangetsu, drawn. Back on the bridge, Renji walks over to Uryū, who lies in the center of a charred crater atop an intact section of the ground with slight burns, and asserts that it is nothing personal.
Suddenly, a twitching Uryū initiates Sklaverei, converting the surrounding rubble into Reishi that he absorbs into his Quincy: Vollständig, restoring his clothing and furnishing his arms and legs with gauntlets. Noting that a confused Renji hesitated on the killing blow, Uryū wonders if this was Ichigo's influence and generates hundreds of flechette-shaped Heilig Pfeil, with which he initiates Federzwinger by amassing them above Renji and combining them into five long and sturdy rods that embed themselves in a pentagram formation around Renji before stabbing his sides with electrified protrusions.
With Renji screaming in pain at this, Federzwinger crackles with electricity and produces a wall of Reishi between each of the five rods, sealing Renji off from the outside world, as Uryū explains that it absorbs Reiatsu from everything inside it and will deprive Renji of everything that he is so long as he remains within its walls. Once Uryū concludes that Renji's Shikai and Bankai will lose their power from his Reiatsu being drained, Federzwinger shatters in a radial explosion of force, leaving Renji to fall to his knees and see that his Zanpakutō has returned to its sealed form while Uryū declares that his Bankai ends here.
Despite this, Renji berates Uryū for speaking as though he knows what Bankai is, and as Uryū calmly draws back a normal Heilig Pfeil in his Heilig Bogen, a groaning Renji notes his Bankai is not called "Sōō" for nothing while a spectral, skeletal form of Hihiō rips itself out of his arm. After Uryū muses on the name meaning "Two Kings" and targets his chest, Renji fires a smaller Hikotsu Taihō just as Uryū fires his Heilig Pfeil, which disperses the energy blast and punches a hole through Renji's chest. In the aftermath, as Renji collapses and the skeletal Hihiō disintegrates, Uryū approaches him and asserts that Renji lost because he was unconsciously holding back, he did not know about Uryū's powers, and he is a Shinigami that Uryū despises.
