Mayuri Kurotsuchi is the Shinigami captain of the 12th Division of the Gotei 13 and the second president of the SRDI. His lieutenant is Nemu Kurotsuchi, his artificially-created "daughter".
After being released from his detention in the Nest of Maggots by Kisuke Urahara, Mayuri became a researcher in the 12th Division's research institute, rising to the rank of 3rd Seat. Sometime after Urahara fled Soul Society, Mayuri became the 12th Division's captain. During the Ryoka Invasion, he intercepted Uryū Ishida and Orihime Inoue, only to be defeated by Uryū. After reconstituting his form, he travels to Hueco Mundo where he fights and eventually defeats the 8th Espada, Szayelaporro Granz. Mayuri goes on to use the spoils of this war in the subsequent battle against the Wandenreich.
