Berenice Gabrielli (ベレニケ・ガブリエリ, Berenike Gaburieri) is a Quincy and a member of the Wandenreich's Sternritter with the designation Q: The Question.

Appearance

Berenice is a relatively slender man with youthful features. His hair is mostly short and pink, but the right side of his bangs are longer and purple. His fingernails are painted and each bears a dark diagonal line. His attire is a variation of the Sternritter's typical white uniform, consisting of the order's signature hooded-cloak, a trench coat, and a bolo tie encircling his neck.

Personality

According to 11th Division Captain Kenpachi Zaraki, Berenice is a very talkative person. Ultimately, this made him over-confident with his ability and careless, which led to his death against Kenpachi.

Plot

The Thousand-Year Blood War

Berenice is killed by Kenpachi Zaraki.

Upon receiving the orders of Yhwach, Berenice and the other Sternritter gather at the Gate of the Sun before traveling to the Seireitei to participate in the conquest of Soul Society.

Once there, Berenice and the others create pillars of blue flame prior to engaging the Shinigami in battle. Shortly afterwards, Berenice is one of three Sternritter who confront 11th Division Captain Kenpachi Zaraki during the invasion's initial stages. However, Kenpachi rips his throat out and later carries Berenice's corpse atop his shoulders, alongside those of the others, before unceremoniously dropping it in front of Yhwach.

Powers & Abilities

Great Spiritual Power: Berenice's spiritual power is on a level comparable to or greater than that of a captain-level Shinigami.

Reishi Manipulation: As a Quincy, Berenice primarily absorbs Reishi from the atmosphere and coats it with his own Reiryoku to form weapons. He has an easier time collecting this energy in environments with higher concentrations of Reishi, such as in Soul Society or Hueco Mundo.

Schrift

The Question (異議 (ザ・クエスチョン), Za Kuesuchon; Japanese for "Objection"): With his Schrift, Berenice can harm his opponents by objecting to their existence and actions. He can make an objection to something, and the opponent is penalized if they fail to overcome that objection, with the opponent being forced to respond. Berenice explains his ability using the German word "sollen" (ゾルレン, Zoruren; German for "Should/Shall") or the Japanese word "igi" (異議), which expresses the idea of something that should be done or the way something ought to be, such as being ordered to do something by force or through one's duty; this is demonstrated through Berenice questioning Kenpachi Zaraki's murderous intent.

  • The official Viz translation of the manga as well as the official sub and dub of the anime have Kenpachi Zaraki explicitly refer to Berenice as male.
  • In the anime, Berenice uses the first-person pronoun boku (僕), which has a masculine connotation, being used primarily by young men and boys (though it is not male-exclusive and sometimes, though rarely, used by young women/girls as well, in which case it tends to carry a tomboyish connotation).
  • Berenice's Japanese and English voice actors are both male.
• Berenice's hair is depicted as pink and purple in the manga, black and blonde in the digital colored manga, and purple and blonde in the anime.
