Overview

Askin Nakk Le Vaar (アスキン・ナックルヴァール, Asukin Nakkuruvāru) is a Quincy and one of the Wandenreich's Sternritter with the designation D: The Deathdealing.[3][2] He is the only lower-ranking Sternritter promoted to Yhwach's elite guard: the Schutzstaffel.[4][5]

Appearance[]

Askin is a tall, slim, and fair-skinned man. His black[6] hair is neck-length and slicked back, save for a strand that falls into his face, down to his mouth; Askin's face possesses high cheekbones, lavender eyes, kinky eyebrows, and full lips. Askin's Sternritter attire consists of a light-gray, ribbed, V-neck collar over his chest, which sits above (or is part of) Askin's long-sleeved shirt; the latter is white with a gray-ribbed hem that, on a front overlap, holds a gray disc brooch (pink in the colored manga). Above Askin's left wrist is a trio of bracers (magenta, pink, and orange) with ringed, disc-shaped knobs of gray (pink in the manga) color, one bearing a Quincy Zeichen, from which Askin draws his Heilig Bogen.[7] Askin's lower wear consists of white harem pants with the same gray ribbing, tucked below the knees into black boots that feature gray soles, pointed toes, and knobbed hoops for decoration. Prior to his Schutzstaffel promotion, Askin would don a white Wandenreich cloak with a standing collar, lapels, and buttons marked with the empire's emblem (which is also emblazoned on the cloak's back).[8][9][10] When brought to the Soul King Palace as part of Yhwach's guard, Askin swaps his cloak for a hooded one with a large, red Hagal rune on the left front.[11] Askin later forgoes the cloak during the battle on Wahrwelt,[12] wherein his shirt is eventually burned off, leaving only the collar on Askin's upper body.[13]

Personality[]

575Askin watches

Askin having a picnic while observing Gremmy's battle.

Askin is an eccentric man with a calm, laid-back disposition. He has a tendency to act frivolously and bring levity to otherwise serious situations, such as making playful gestures at enemies[14] or having a picnic in the midst of a battlefield, while spectating a fellow Sternritter's fight through binoculars.[15] Askin is particularly fond of drinking café au lait and carries some with him in a thermos at all times.[16][17][18][19]

Askin maintains a casual yet polite tone with allies and enemies alike, even introducing himself by name to the latter[20] and making small talk with them.[14][21][22][23] For unknown reasons, Askin's Quincy peers only address him by his last name, Nakk Le Vaar (even Gerard Valkyrie, who calls the other Schutzstaffel members by their given names).[24][25][26] At times Askin can be sarcastic, telling Bazz-B that he seemed calm after interrupting his attack on Haschwalth,[27] or downright condescending, such as questioning the intelligence of the SRDI scientists.[28] Askin has a self-deprecating sense of humor and is talkative to a fault: especially during battle he tends to go on long spiels about himself, his powers and inability to die (which he calls shameful), or the "fatal" mistakes of his opponents once they are hopelessly under The Deathdealing's influence;[29][30][31][32][33][34][23] Askin's catchphrase is "That's fatal" (致命的(だぜ), Chimei-teki (daze)), in reference to his Schrift.[35][36][37][38][39][19][40][41] Wanting to project the air of someone who is calm at all times, Askin dislikes using tough-sounding words, claiming that doing so betrays one's lack of control.[42] Even so, Askin is not completely aloof and can be shaken, such as being intimidated by Yhwach's eldritch appearance following his absorption of the Soul King[43] and panicking when Yhwach's power threatened the destruction of the Soul King Palace.[44]

Ep399AskinFleesAgain

Askin flees from Grimmjow.

Askin's MO in battle is to put on the act of a cowardly, ineffectual underling, at times even running away mid-battle, in order for his opponents to drop their guard and leave themselves vulnerable. In this regard, Askin is self-aware and claims to embrace the fact that he comes across as a weakling, exploiting the false impression he gives to gain the upper hand in his fights.[45][37][46][47][48][49][50] If faced with an enemy whom he deems troublesome[51] or a bad matchup for The Deathdealing,[37] Askin attempts to avoid engaging them. By his own admission, he is bad at dealing with finicky details and prefers his fights to finish quickly, hence dodging a confrontation against Mayuri Kurotsuchi after deciding that he would be too complicated to take on; still, Askin attempts to bait Mayuri into a trap as he leaves, highlighting his deceitful nature.[52]

Askin is indolent and slow to involve himself in action.[46][47] Even when he does enter combat he remains cautious, not being one to reveal his powers carelessly[53] or underestimate his opposition. When unsure of his enemy's powers he will keep his distance, and even when falling victim to a disturbing ability he can keep a relatively cool head, something that was commended by Kisuke Urahara.[54] Askin aims to kill stealthily if possible[55] and is averse to head-on "power-versus-power" battles.[56] He also takes pride in his fighting style and firmly believes in adhering to it no matter what: namely to rely entirely on lethal doses to "elegantly" kill off opponents. As a rule, Askin eschews crude methods like choking to death those incapacitated by his Schrift, being visibly annoyed when others suggest he employ such tactics and telling Yoruichi Shihōin that women like her and Bambietta Basterbine are more suited to do so.[57] Stressing the importance of style, Askin also defines a woman's value not by superficial attributes like beauty, but instead by her style and presentation.[58]

Unlike most Sternritter, Askin acts cordial towards his enemies, never resorting to insults or belittlement, and readily hands out praise to those who impress him.[59][60][61][62] During their confrontation he comes to greatly respect Urahara for his intellect and resourcefulness,[63][64] and even when ultimately brought down in a surprise attack, through external intervention on Urahara's behalf, Askin takes his defeat in stride, even complimenting Urahara with his dying breath.[65]

As intuited by Urahara, Askin does not serve Yhwach out of pure loyalty, despite Askin's sarcastic insistence that he is "about twice as loyal as a Pomeranian". In his own words, Askin follows the Quincy King because he finds him "interesting" and harbors a deep curiosity about what will become of the Three Worlds once they are destroyed and remade in Yhwach's image; though Askin admits to liking Urahara's retort that scientists like he or Mayuri would prefer creating change themselves, Askin insists that he himself would rather see what Yhwach will make of the world.[66]

Plot[]

The Thousand-Year Blood War arc[]

Upon receiving the orders of Yhwach, Askin and the other Sternritter gather at the Gate of the Sun before traveling to the Seireitei in order to participate in the conquest of Soul Society.[67][68]

543Askin explains

Askin explains why he stopped the fight.

Following the meeting where Yhwach nominates Uryū Ishida as his successor, Askin, using his Gift Ball, breaks up a confrontation between Jugram Haschwalth and Bazz-B. He states that he helped them by preventing a fight from erupting since Yhwach hates infighting, and warns them about having onlookers. He goes on to note a fight would be bad for their positions, especially for Haschwalth.[69] Afterwards, Askin attends a meeting with the other Sternritter, in the Wörtlich hall of Silbern. Haschwalth informs them they have been ordered to defeat the captains whose Bankai they stole. Askin then listens as Haschwalth explains that the order is to strike them down by crushing their hope.[70]

Ep381AskinNoticesRoom

Askin notices the invisible room behind him.

During the Wandenreich's second assault on Soul Society, Askin appears within the space where the Shinigami Research and Development Institute used to be and explains to the researchers present how the Quincy had been hiding in the shadows for the past 1000 years. Askin is in turn surprised by the appearance of 12th Division Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi from within an invisible room. Mayuri states that Askin probably wants to verify their intelligence before leaving.[71]

After analyzing Mayuri's appearance, Askin decides to retreat from battle, claiming that he does not want to spend time trying different ways to kill Mayuri. He states he is not a detail-oriented person and attempts to leave, but asks Mayuri if he isn't going to stop him, prompting Mayuri to say that he wants time to analyze Askin's Reiatsu. When Mayuri hypothesizes that Askin wants him to follow him into his "territory", Askin states that this deduction is scary. After sensing 2nd Division Captain Suì-Fēng dealing a harsh blow to BG9, Askin reveals that Yhwach expected the captains who lost their Bankai to master different ways to fight before confirming Mayuri's suspicions of the Sternritter being prepared for this.[72]

Later, Askin watches Kenpachi Zaraki's battle with Gremmy Thoumeaux through a pair of binoculars while eating and notes how impressive it is for Kenpachi to be fighting on par with Gremmy before stating he does not understand why Yhwach would allow Gremmy onto the battlefield in the first place. When PePe Waccabrada appears and says things would have been better if Yhwach had kept a monster like Gremmy locked up, Askin notes PePe is a monster himself, prompting PePe to state Askin is one as well. Deciding to leave, Askin claims he is not a fan of getting caught up in Gremmy's mess and states he does not want to sound as though he is belittling Gremmy before noting society looks down on those who dream all day without doing anything. However, he states that, after having seen Gremmy do the impossible, it is probably better that dreams do not become reality.[73]

Ep390SchutzstaffelAppears

Askin appears alongside the other Schutzstaffel.

Moments later, a nervous Askin watches as the meteorite which Gremmy summoned hurtles toward the Seireitei and notes Gremmy has gone mad before stating he should have been handled differently.[74] When Ichigo Kurosaki arrives on the battlefield, Askin notes that it is time and wonders if he will be lucky enough to get chosen.[75] Later, in the Soul King Palace when Yhwach summons his Schutzstaffel, Askin is among those who emerge from his shadow and notes that he is the only one of a lower rank that was promoted. When Askin states he should probably not hold back, Gerard Valkyrie promises to cut him down if the former gets in his way.[76] When Kirio Hikifune surrounds the group with a cage of trees, Askin is surprised by what has happened.[77]

After Ōetsu Nimaiya appears, Askin expresses shock when Gerard is abruptly dispatched. He is the last of the four Schutzstaffel to be cut down, but due to comprehending the cutting power of Nimaiya's sword, he manages to avoid a fatal injury by leaping away from Nimaiya's path. As Nimaiya praises Askin for anticipating his maneuver, Askin laments the fact that he still got cut despite his effort before having his neck slashed. However, he surprises Nimaiya by revealing that he is not dead, stating that it is not yet over. Lamenting his ability, Askin states that the reason Yhwach took him in was because he wouldn't die and that in thinking about his power, he feels as though he is always close to dying.[78]

602Nimaiya defeats

Nimaiya defeats Askin with a single attack.

Askin explains how The Deathdealing lets him control the lethal dose of any substance. When Nimaiya collapses, Askin gets up and reveals he has made the blood in Nimaiya's body lethal to him. Askin draws his bow and prepares to finish Nimaiya off, but is surprised when Nimaiya cuts his own throat to let the blood out of his body. When Askin points out how Nimaiya will eventually die by losing too much blood to avoid dying from having too much blood, Nimaiya notes this and has Tenjirō Kirinji replace his blood with his hot spring water before cutting down Askin, who notes this was a lethal strike before collapsing.[79]

Soon afterward, Askin is revived through the power of Yhwach's Auswählen[80] and engages Kirinji in battle, who Askin admits is a bad matchup agains this own powers. Regardless, Kirinji underestimates Askin, who manages to paralyze the Shinigami and incapacitate him with a Heilig Pfeil. Askin later looks on in shock as Nimaiya, Kirinji, and Hikifune slit their own throats to release the Blood Oath's Seal binding them. As Senjumaru Shutara orders the Schutzstaffel to prepare themselves before activating her Bankai, Shatatsu Karagara Shigarami no Tsuji, Askin finds himself sealed away in a tapestry alongside his comrades.[37]

625Schutzstaffel sit

Askin and his fellow Schutzstaffel sit in the palace.

Later, after Yhwach kills the Soul King and is confronted by Ichigo Kurosaki and his friends, Askin and the other Schutzstaffel arrive to confront them.[81] Afterward, Askin and the other Schutzstaffel sit on couches in the palace. When Lille wonders if they should really be sitting around, Askin reminds him that they likely cannot get near Yhwach without being swallowed up as well.[82]

After Yhwach completely absorbs the Soul King, Haschwalth informs Askin and the others of this, to their surprise, before bringing them to the Soul King's chambers, where they find Yhwach oozing darkness. As Askin wonders what the darkness is, Yhwach turns around to reveal that he has gained several more eyes, shocking him enough to start stepping back, though Haschwalth stops him. Due to Yhwach's immense power, the top of the palace shatters, forcing the Sternritter to move to pieces of rubble for safety. Clinging to a ledge, Askin begs Haschwalth to do something about Yhwach.[83]

Ep399AskinFlees

Askin flees from Grimmjow.

Afterwards, Askin is present alongside Haschwalth and the other Sternritter when Yhwach explains the name of his new palace, Wahrwelt, and how it will be the cornerstone of their new world.[84] Soon after, he heads out into the city[85] and prepares to confront Ichigo's group as they are infiltrating the palace grounds, much to his own surprise and dismay. Before he has time to ready, however, Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez rushes in and attacks him immediately.[86] As Grimmjow and Ichigo argue over the former's attack, Askin runs away from Grimmjow, who begins pursuing him. After being told that he will die because he is weaker, Askin asks Grimmjow where he came from, and offers to team up with him to kill Ichigo upon learning that Grimmjow is Ichigo's enemy, only to be attacked in response.[87]

648Ichigo and Askin experience

Askin and Ichigo experience the effects of Shunsui's Bankai.

Askin manages to escape Grimmjow and rests on a roof, where he watches Ichigo's group split up to search for Grimmjow. However, he is soon confronted again by the Arrancar. He runs from Grimmjow again, but tosses a poisonous ball behind him. The ball poisons Grimmjow, causing him to collapse, and Askin mocks Grimmjow.[88] Soon afterwards, he finds Ichigo and appears right in front of him. He tells Ichigo that he put Grimmjow "to sleep" and introduces himself. As he is about to confront Ichigo, he becomes shocked to see that the area is surrounded in darkness due to the release of Shunsui Kyōraku's Bankai, Katen Kyōkotsu: Karamatsu Shinjū.[89]

Ep405YoruichiConfrontsAskin

Yoruichi confronts Askin.

Soon afterward, Askin watches Gerard smashing through buildings in the distance while noting that he has probably not noticed Lille's defeat before proceeding to explain the mysterious nature of Gerard and Pernida as parts of the Soul King to Ichigo, who is lying on the ground before him. When Yasutora Sado and Orihime Inoue confront him, Askin dodges Sado's attack and watches as the two fall victim to Gift Bad before explaining the nature of both the technique and The Deathdealing to them. However, Askin is interrupted by Yoruichi Shihōin, who questions why he does not simply attack his enemies while they are incapacitated, prompting an irritated Askin to attack her before stating that he prefers killing his opponents "elegantly" with The Deathdealing instead. After Yoruichi activates her Shunkō, Askin brings out his Heilig Bogen before firing two Heilig Pfeil at her, only for Yoruichi to dodge one while throwing the other into his shoulder. As Askin flies back, Yoruichi activates Shunkō: Raijin Senkei before engulfing Askin in a blast of energy.[90]

Ep405AskinSurvivesAttack

Askin survives Yūshirō's attack.

After Yūshirō Shihōin arrives, Askin emerges from the smoke with only minor injuries and apologizes for interrupting the family reunion before noting that Yhwach is going to berate him upon noticing that Ichigo and his friends are escaping. When Askin demeans Yoruichi's technique, Yūshirō proclaims that he will incur his wrath by making fun of his sister, prompting Askin to accept his challenge while mistakenly referring to him as a girl. However, Askin is shocked when Yūshirō proceeds to overwhelm him with multiple punches and expresses disbelief at him being so strong before being engulfed in the explosion of Yūshirō's Shunkō: Bakuen Musō. Despite this, Askin manages to survive, albeit with severe burns, and informs Yoruichi and Yūshirō that their Reiatsu will no longer be able to kill him.[91]

Ep405AskinShootsYushiro

Askin shoots Yūshirō with three arrows.

Upon noticing Askin's burns disappearing, Yoruichi asks him if all of his wounds have healed, prompting Askin to confirm this and reveal that he has become immune by raising the lethal dose before claiming that Yoruichi will die without even scratching him once if she keeps standing there in shock. When Yūshirō attempts to attack him with another Shunkō technique and fails, Askin fires three Heilig Pfeil through his chest while reminding him that he is immune to Shunkō now. As Yoruichi catches her brother, Askin states that her only just realizing how powerful he is was lethal.[92]

662Askin taunts

Askin corners Yoruichi.

Askin blasts Yoruichi with a Gift Ball containing Reishi, oxygen, and nitrogen, and he lies down on the ground as rubble from Silbern falls around him. He comments to Yoruichi on being unable to die no matter what happens, which she ignores. Askin expresses his surprise that she was still alive despite his attacks, revealing that he was trying his best to kill Yoruichi and was annoyed that she kept putting him down. As Yoruichi looks at Yūshirō, Askin gets right in front of her, saying that she was as good as dead if he could get this close. Kisuke Urahara then arrives, and Askin recognizes the Shinigami, to his surprise. Askin says that he has no interest in acquaintances and only knew Urahara due to him being one of the five battle powers. Suddenly, Yoruichi leaps up into the air, shocking Askin, who realizes that this is why Urahara is one of those powers and why he is constantly being bothered.[93]

As Urahara and Yoruichi talk in midair, Askin fires a Heilig Pfeil at them, but is not surprised when it misses. Yoruichi attacks Askin, but he dodges all her strikes before punching her in the stomach, sending her to her knees. Suddenly, Urahara pulls off a piece of paper which causes Yoruichi to transform, and Askin reacts in shock as he is blown away by the transformation.[94]

663Yoruichi vs

Askin faces off against Yoruichi's new form.

Askin stares in shock at Yoruichi's new form, and Urahara names it, making Askin realize that she cannot comprehend their language. Before Askin can react, Yoruichi gets in front of him and slashes him in the shoulder with her Shunkō before blowing him away in a blast of electrical energy. Askin leaps back up, confused as to why his immunity to her Reiatsu was not working. As Yoruichi starts ignoring Askin before attacking him again, Urahara reveals that her Reiatsu changes 48 times per second. Yoruichi then engulfs Askin in an enormous bolt of Reiatsu, sending him crashing into the ground. Urahara goes to look for Askin's body, when he and Yoruichi are engulfed by Askin's Gift Ball Deluxe. Askin then arrives in his Quincy: Vollständig form.[95]

664Urahara vs

Urahara attacks Askin.

After noting that spending one second in his Quincy: Vollständig would expose him to all 48 different types of Reiatsu, Askin reveals that his Quincy: Vollständig allows him to adapt to changes in the properties of poison and claims that neither Urahara nor Yoruichi will be able to harm him now. Askin asks Urahara if he has any more tricks up his sleeve while erecting a Gift Bereich around his Gift Ball Deluxe, which he claims is impossible to escape. When Urahara points out that he does not appear to be acting purely out of loyalty, Askin admits that he is interested in seeing what Yhwach creates after destroying all three realms and claims Urahara is too, prompting Urahara to attack him while stating that Mayuri would be more intrigued by this, but only if he could shape it himself. Grinning, Askin throws a Gift Ring at Urahara, who loses both eyes to it, and explains how it focuses all of The Deathdealing into one point in order to force an instant death upon that point before claiming that doing this to all of Urahara's internal organs is the only way to kill him. However, Askin is surprised when Urahara activates his Bankai, Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame.[96]

665Askin is impaled

Askin is impaled by Grimmjow.

When Askin admits that he does not have any intel on his Bankai, Urahara states that this is the first time he has used it in front of the Quincies, prompting Askin to wonder what kind of power it possesses. Urahara points out how this is a very personal question before telling Askin that he will be experiencing its power soon enough as Askin's arm is suddenly split open. As Askin leaps back, his arm is sown up, prompting Urahara to praise him for realizing that his Bankai has a range before revealing that its power is to restructure anything it touches as the hands of Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame repair his eyes. Slashing Askin across the chest, Urahara turns around and crosses blades with him as Askin expresses surprise at Urahara being able to see. Urahara restructures his other hand and grasps his sword before sending Askin flying through several buildings. However, Askin manages to recover and laments how this is turning into a battle of brute force before increasing the power of his Gift Ball Deluxe to incapacitate Urahara. As Askin admits that he does not want to deal with Urahara's Bankai, Urahara notes that he forgot one thing as Askin is impaled by a hand through his chest. Pointing out how Askin never said his Gift Bereich was impenetrable, Urahara reveals that he made a path inside and thanks Grimmjow, who crushes Askin's heart in his hand.[97]

666Askin explains

Askin reveals that his Gift Ball Deluxe will kill Urahara and Grimmjow as he dies.

Askin collapses and expresses his shock that Grimmjow is still moving. Kisuke reveals that he healed him in anticipation for the battle, and Askin expresses surprise that the Shinigami would plan so extremely far ahead. Kisuke replies that this was a fight for survival, and Askin begins to understand as Grimmjow suddenly impales him again in order to stop his talking. As he dies, Askin reveals that the Gift Ball Deluxe will increase in potency, but wonders if Kisuke has a plan for this, despite clearly having no strength.[98]

Powers & Abilities[]

656Askin incapacitates Ichigo

Askin incapacitates Ichigo with The Deathdealing.

The Deathdealing (致死量 (ザ・デスディーリング), Za Desudīringu; Japanese for "Lethal Dose"): Askin's Schrift grants him precise control over lethal doses. After taking a particular substance into his body (usually by ingestion), Askin can then calculate its "perfect lethal dose" (完全致死量, kanzen chishiryō) — how much of that substance will 100% cause death — and adjust that value as he sees fit.[99][100] By lowering lethal doses, Askin can make normally harmless or even vital substances (like blood,[101] Reishi,[100] or select chemicals like oxygen and nitrogen[102]) become deadly "poison" to enemies around him, killing or incapacitating them without needing to attack head-on; for example, by drinking blood, Askin can make opponents be killed by the very blood coursing through their veins.[101] On the other hand, by drastically raising the lethal dose of a harmful substance or energy he absorbs (including an enemy's Reiatsu), Askin can develop an "immunity" to it, such that he becomes invulnerable to his enemies' powers following sufficient exposure to their attacks.[103][104][105]

Poisoning (中毒, Chūdoku):[100] By lowering the lethal dose of a substance that enemies are exposed to or hold within their bodies (like blood or Reishi), Askin can make it fatal to them, pushing said enemies towards death. This "poisoning" effect seems to be faster the more Askin ingests of the target substance,[106] and by decreasing the lethal dose of something vital like blood, he can make death all but certain — e.g., Askin may poison his opponent with their own blood so that, if they bleed themself to go back below the lethal dose, they instead die of blood loss.[101] However, particularly strong opponents take considerably longer to be disabled or killed and may require extra-thorough poisoning, due to their high endurance.[38][107] In order to facilitate the effects of his Schrift, Askin can release a tangible "poison" from his body that appears as a purple-violet (or green) miasma, and which he may either launch as projectiles[108] or expand over the battlefield to make whoever touches it near-instantly succumb to his Schrift's effects.[109]
Ep401AskinPromisesFatal

Askin holds four Gift Balls.

  • Gift Ball (毒入りボール (ギフト・バル), Gifuto Baru; German and Japanese for "Poison Ball"): Askin conjures one or multiple[38] slow-moving balls of poison to throw at an opponent[108] or keep suspended in midair.[110] Anyone who touches these purple balls will near-instantly succumb to The Deathdealing, with a single Gift Ball proving potent enough to incapacitate the former 6th Espada, Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez, making him collapse right after making contact.[108][111] Askin can also mix different substances into one ball for a stronger, multi-layered poisoning effect against more powerful foes, as seen when he pushed Yoruichi Shihōin to the brink of unconsciousness with a Reishi-oxygen-nitrogen Hybrid Gift Ball.[102]
Ep405GiftBad

Askin's Gift Bad.

  • Gift Bad (毒入りプール (ギフト・バート), Gifuto Bāto; German for "Poison Bath", Japanese for "Poison Pool"): Askin covers the ground in a large, circular, greenish-purple field of poison visually reminiscent of an oil slick.[112] While this "pool" is not fatal itself, should his enemies step inside, Askin can drastically lower their "tolerance" (耐性, taisei) for a substance of his choosing to make them become "poisoned" by that substance, such as inducing acute Reishi poisoning in his enemies while in the Reishi-dense environment of Wahrwelt.[109]
Immunity (免疫, Men'eki): Askin can develop total "immunity" to any substance or energy to which he is exposed, making it non-fatal to himself by drastically raising the lethal dose involved. This building of immunity, which Askin calls the ultimate way of staving off death,[113] can even extend to abilities: after soaking up the Reiatsu of enemy attacks and upping the lethal dose, Askin becomes "immune" and can no longer be harmed by all subsequent attacks containing the same Reiatsu.[103][104] This immunity acquisition occurs extremely fast: upon receiving an attack, Askin reflexively analyzes its Reiatsu profile to build his immunity at a terrifying speed, such that he can effectively nullify any attack within one minute.[105]
  • Healing Factor: After developing an immunity, Askin automatically heals all injuries caused by the substance and/or energy to which the immunity pertains. After becoming immune to the Reiatsu of Yoruichi and Yūshirō Shihōin, Askin recovered within seconds from the severe full-body burns inflicted by the sibling's use of their respective lightning and fire Shunkō.[104]

Reishi Manipulation: As a Quincy, Askin primarily fights by gathering spirit particles from his surroundings and coating them with his own spirit energy to form weapons.[114] He has an easier time collecting Reishi in environments that are denser with it, such as in Soul Society and Hueco Mundo.[115]

  • Hirenkyaku Expert: Askin is a remarkably fast Quincy. He intentionally half-avoided a sword stroke from Ōetsu Nimaiya by leaping back at the same speed as the latter's blade, to fool Nimaiya into thinking that he had been fatally cut, whereas the other Schutzstaffel members had failed to react to Nimaiya's attacks at all.[116] Askin later proved able to somewhat keep pace with the "Flash Goddess" Yoruichi and catch up to her after she, carrying her wounded brother, had attempted to put some distance between them, noting that while she was indeed fast, so was he; subsequently, Askin was able to dodge Yoruichi's attempt to strike him from behind in her Raijin Senkei form, taking the woman's own back in the process.[19]

Immense Spiritual Power: As part of Yhwach's Schutzstaffel, Askin's power is notable even by the standards of the Sternritter,[117] all of whom are said to possess Reiryoku levels equal to or higher than a Shinigami captain's.[118] Even prior to being powered up by the Auswählen, Askin was able to pressure the Royal Guard member Ōetsu Nimaiya in battle, forcing him to rely on fellow Divine General Tenjirō Kirinji's help to escape The Deathdealing and strike Askin down.[119] Post-Auswählen, Askin went toe-to-toe with and incapacitated Kirinji (though the latter was still restricted by the Blood Oath's Seal).[37] Later on Wahrwelt, Askin exemplified his power and the lethality of his Schrift by taking down Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez,[108][111] the Special War Power Ichigo Kurosaki,[120] as well as Yoruichi Shihōin and her brother in a 2-on-1.[121][102] After entering his Quincy: Vollständig, Askin went on to press another Special War Power, Kisuke Urahara, enough that the former captain felt forced to use Bankai to even the odds of their fight; even then, Urahara relied on a stratagem involving outside intervention from Grimmjow to narrowly eke out a victory over Askin.[122]

Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Despite his self-admitted aversion to melee combat, Askin could fare well enough in close quarters to handle someone of Tenjirō Kirinji's caliber, albeit with some difficulty.[37] Askin managed to sidestep a blow from a Shunkō-using Yoruichi before having her keel over with a single punch to her stomach (though Yoruichi was still recovering from The Deathdealing).[123]

Immense Endurance: Askin has claimed that his ability to survive normally fatal injuries is what led to him being "chosen" by Yhwach.[124] He was the only member of the Schutzstaffel to survive Nimaiya's initial slashing assault with Sayafushi, remaining in fighting condition after having his throat cut and bleeding profusely.[125] Later when engaging Yoruichi in her Raijū Senkei: Shunryū Kokubyō Senki form, Askin endured a brutal beatdown from the woman, along with being hit point-blank by a massive blast of lightning, and swiftly recovered upon entering his Quincy: Vollständig.[126] Even after having his heart ripped out by Grimmjow, then being punched through the chest, Askin remained alive, conscious, and able to speak for a brief while.[127]

Enhanced Durability: Despite his reluctance to engage in direct combat, Askin is a fairly durable fighter; he withstood a direct hit from Yoruichi Shihōin's electric Shunkō: Raijin Senkei (which leveled a block of Wahrwelt buildings) with only mild wounds,[128] and soon afterwards was struck by the fiery explosion of Yūshirō Shihōin's Shunkō: Bakuen Musō yet remained standing, albeit with severe burns.[129]

Highly Perceptive Combatant: Askin is highly perceptive and calculating in battle. When Nimaiya assailed the Schutzstaffel, Askin timed his backwards leap to be the same speed as Nimaiya's sword swing, allowing himself to be shallowly cut to fool Nimaiya into thinking that the strike was fatal, a feat that impressed Nimaiya despite him seeing through the attempt.[116] When faced with the matter-restructuring power of Urahara's Bankai, Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame, and having his arm torn open, Askin quickly deduced the power's limited range of effect and moved outside, with Urahara commending that cool-headed reaction.[130]

Physiological Expertise: Askin has proven quite knowledgeable on physiology, allowing him to use The Deathdealing to great effect by knowing how much of certain substances is needed to stay alive, then lowering the corresponding lethal doses below that level to kill his foes. Askin was able to discern Nimaiya's weight and how much blood his body contained from simple observation, then accordingly adjusted the lethal dose of the Royal Guard member's blood to be below the vital minimum, to assure his death.[131]

Spirit Weapon[]

Ep391AskinBow

Askin's Heilig Bogen.

Heilig Bogen (神聖弓 (ハイリッヒ・ボーゲン), Hairihhi Bōgen; German for "Holy Bow", Japanese for "Sacred Bow"): Askin's favored Reishi weapon is a longbow, which he summons by drawing it from the disc-shaped knob (with a Quincy Zeichen) present on one of his left arm's bracelets. While the bowstring is made of pure blue Reishi, the bowstave is a more solid-looking white, with its rounded cross-section preserved for the upper and lower limbs but interrupted in the center, where several rings are linked together in zigzag.[132] Askin can alternatively make the bow spring forth on its own, each half emerging from a different bracelet so that the bowstave remains stable on Askin's wrist without being gripped.[133]

Ep392AskinShootsKirinji

Askin shoots Kirinji.

  • Heilig Pfeil (神聖滅矢 (ハイリッヒ・プファイル), Hairihhi Pufairu; German for "Holy Arrow", Japanese for "Sacred Destruction Arrows"): Askin can fire medium-sized Heilig Pfeil with Quincy Zeichen-shaped fletches from his bow, even two[134] or three arrows at once;[135] alternatively, Askin can shoot Heilig Pfeil directly from his index finger by making a gun gesture.[136] A single arrow fired from his bow at point-blank range was strong enough to pierce through the side of Tenjirō Kirinji, incapacitating the Royal Guard member while he was under the Blood Oath's Seal.[37]

Quincy: Vollständig[]

663Askin's Vollstandig, Hasshein

Askin's Quincy: Vollständig, Hasshein.

Ep392PartialHasshein

Hasshein partially manifested.

Hasshein (神の毒見 (ハスハイン), Hasuhain; Japanese for "God's Poison Taster"; Viz "Hass Hein (God's Taster)"): When entering his Quincy: Vollständig, Askin gains two wings each consisting of two purple Reishi beams linking together circles in a zigzag, thus resembling molecular chains. The same purple Reishi is present around Askin's waist as a free-floating belt of sorts (also in the shape of bound-together circles) and as five bracelets, each being a plain ring adorned with a spherule (one above Askin's left wrist and three above his right). While Askin's upper body is left bare, save for his ribbed gray collar, his lower body becomes clothed in purple Reishi pants and boots, with a single anklet above each foot (shaped the same as the wristlets). Furthermore, several disjoined Reishi circles appear on Askin's arms and stomach: five hovering above his left arm and three above his right forearm, and ten being stuck to his abdominals (one covering his navel while the other nine extend from it in a ⊥ formation). Finally, Askin's purple Heiligenschein is shaped like Quincy Zeichen, with a circle tipping each point of the star, and an orange-transparent visor manifests over his eyes.[137] Apart from the complete version, Askin can also manifest a partial Quincy: Vollständig, which gives him a rounder star halo and two wings made each of a single beam[138][139] (while in the original manga he only gains two plain blue, feathery wings).[140]

  • Flight: Askin becomes able to fly via Hasshein's wings.[139]
  • Reishi Staff: Askin's weapon in his Vollständig is a long, flexible rod made of purple Reishi and fitted with several balls, which he can wield in close-quarters combat to defend and clash against blade-wielding opponents.[37][141] He can extend its length and also turn each of its balls into as many as five Gift Ball to send forth at the target.[37]
  • The Deathdealing (Enhanced): Hasshein enhances the The Deathdealing by not only increasing the scale of Askin's techniques, but also by allowing him to adapt to "alterations in poison" (毒の変質, doku no henshitsu): no matter how much a "poison's surface layer" (毒の表層, doku no hyōsō) changes, as long as the "base" (ベース, bēsu) remains the same, Askin is able to adapt his immunity to instantly render the poison ineffective. This means that even if an opponent's Reiatsu undergoes rapid fluctuations on a surface level (as Yoruichi's does tens of times a second in her Shunryū Kokubyō Senki form), Askin will not lose his immunity after the initial acquisition, remaining invulnerable to that Reiatsu.[142]
664Gift Bereich

A Gift Ball Deluxe demarcated with a Bereich barrier.

  • Gift Ball Deluxe (極上毒入りボール (ギフト・バル・デラックス), Gifuto Baru Derakkusu; German for "Poison Ball Deluxe", Japanese for "First-Rate Poison Ball"): Askin brings forth an enormous Gift Ball (the biggest that he can make) centered around him and engulfing the battlefield. Any enemy caught inside will be subject to The Deathdealing and slowly poisoned to death at a rate of Askin's choosing.[143] Askin can manually increase the concentration of the Gift Ball Deluxe,[144] and upon his death its power is magnified uncontrollably.[145]
  • Gift Bereich (猛毒 (ギフト)領域 (ベライヒ), Gifuto Beraihi; German for "Poison Realm", Japanese for "Deadly Poison Domain"): Askin spawns several interlinked Reishi circles, then scatters them around a space (like the boundary of a Gift Ball Deluxe) in order to form a Bereich barrier, making that space inescapable from the inside[146] (though still intrudable from outside).[147]
664Askin throws

Askin throws a Gift Ring.

  • Gift Ring (猛毒の指輪 (ギフトリング), Gifuto Ringu; German for "Poison Ring", Japanese for "Deadly Poison Ring"): An extra-lethal attack meant to be used against enemies who have proven too strong to be killed with simple poisoning. Askin expands one of the rings serving as his bracelets and hurls it at an opponent. The ring shrinks back down as it flies, seeming to vanish, and upon hitting the targeted body part (preferably a vital organ) as a piercing, all of The Deathdealing's killing power is focused into that specific point, forcing the "instant death" (即死, sokushi) of the pierced body part.[148]

Weaknesses[]

The Deathdealing[]

Intake/Exposure Requirement: In order to be able to lower or raise the lethal dose of a substance, Askin needs to first "take in" (取り込まなきゃ, torikomanakya) a great amount of that substance;[100] for example, to manipulate the lethal dose of blood he needs to drink a lot of it,[101] and to become immune to his enemies' Reiatsu, he needs to first be thoroughly exposed to it through their attacks.[103][104]

Quantity Reduction/Element Extraction: If Askin's target drains the element made poisonous to them from their body, they can lower its concentration below the lethal dose to avoid death; however, if said element is something vital (like blood), losing too much will itself be fatal, making this option unviable.[149]

Enemy Resistance to Poisoning: Particularly strong enemies can resist The Deathdealing through sheer endurance, forcing Askin to be more thorough or hands-on in his poisoning efforts.[38][107]

Limited Immunity: Askin can build his immunity to any element (like an enemy's Reiatsu) through exposure, but if that element's properties change even just superficially, his immunity is nullified and has to be re-developed all over again.[105] However, Askin's Quincy: Vollständig eliminates this weakness by allowing Askin to adapt to surface alterations in poison;[142] even still, if his opponent's Reiatsu changes at its base (as with an Arrancar who changes back into a Hollow via Resurrección), the immunity is lost.[150]

Immunity-Boosting Drug (免疫強化剤, Men'eki Kyōka-zai): A drug made by Kisuke Urahara that, when injected into a victim of The Deathdealing, makes them quickly recover from the poisoning; however, as Kisuke noted, the formula is underdeveloped, only lasting 5 minutes and not allowing for a complete recovery.[151]

Promotional art of Askin in Bleach: Brave Souls.

  • Askin makes his first appearance outside of the manga as a playable character in Bleach: Brave Souls as part of the commemoration for the Thousand-Year Blood War arc tie-in, where he uses his Quincy: Vollständig, Hasshein. In this form, Askin is a melee normal attack character with the "Technique" Attribute and the "Zero Division Killer" ability, which he is the first unit to have, as well as a chance to inflict Poison with every attack other than his special and his second Strong Attack, which uniquely halves the stats of those affected for a short period of time; his third Strong Attack is Gift Bad. His unlockable skills are "Berserker +40%", "Bruiser +30%", "Flurry", "Paralysis Duration -100%", "Poise", "Poison Duration -100%", "Sprinter +1", and "Start Barrier +10", while his Soul Trait is "Damage Taken -16%"; meanwhile, his Arena Traits are "Normal Attack Damage +13%" and "Attack +90", while his Arena Abilities other than than "All Stats +5%" are "Debilitator +2.0 secs." at level 5 and "Normal Attack Damage +30%" at level 10. Askin's special is The Deathdealing (致死量, Chishiryō; Japanese for "Lethal Dose"), where he initiates Gift Bereich and throws a deadly poisoned ring that inflicts immense damage with a very small chance to instantly kill.

Trivia[]

  • In the second best bout poll, Askin's fight alongside the other Schutzstaffel against Ōetsu Nimaiya ranked 68th.[152]
  • Following the initial release of Askin's Quincy: Vollständig, the Reishi ring and circles that surround his waist like a belt are absent in later chapters.[153][154]
  • While explaining the intensifying effects of his Gift Ball Deluxe to Urahara in Chapter 666, Askin is visibly sweating and has blood on his face in the volume release,[155] while the initial magazine release lacked these details.[156]

Klub Outside Trivia[]

Quotes[]

  • (To Bazz-B and Jugram Haschwalth) "I would advise you both to let this matter lie. There is nothing pleasant about such petty fighting. For you in particular, it will be nothing but a poison. Would you not agree, Future Emperor?"[158]
  • (To the members of the SRDI) "Weren't you listening to my explanation? I would have thought a place called the Research and Development Institute would be home to a little more intelligence. I didn't need to 'get inside' at all. I've been in here from the very beginning."[159]
  • (To Mayuri Kurotsuchi) "Nope, no good! Dealing with you is just gonna take way too much time. I'd better not bother. I mean if I was gonna make you die, I reckon I'd have to try out way too many different tactics. Sorry, but I'm just awful with that kind of finicky stuff. I like to get things over with in a flash, y'know?"[160]
  • (To PePe regarding Gremmy Thoumeaux) "Society always looks down on those people who spend all their time dreaming and don't actually achieve anything, but then you look at a guy who can achieve anything he likes just by dreaming, and you think, hey, maybe it's not such a bad thing that most dreams don't come true."[161]
  • (To Ōetsu Nimaiya) "The reason His Majesty took me in was quite simple. It’s because I just wouldn’t die. A bit of a pathetic ability, right...? I hate it, myself. Just thinking about this ability of mine makes me feel so fatally irritated."[162]
  • (To Ōetsu Nimaiya) "My Schrift is "D" And my ability is "The Deathdealing". It allows me to perfectly calculate the "absolute lethal dose" of any substance I consume - the amount that will cause death without fail - and raise or lower that value as I see fit."[163]
  • (To Ōetsu Nimaiya) "You took me lightly, didn't you? The way I speak, the way I act... I seem like a worthless underling, even I know it. But you know, I don't think I really mind. It used to bug me something awful, but lately, I've come around to thinking that it's actually one of my good points. That's what I tell myself, anyway. Think I'm gloomy, do ya? Well, that's just what's so fatal about me."[164]
  • (To Ichigo Kurosaki) "How about we quit talking about things in terms of winners and losers? I'm not good with that kind of thing."[165]
  • (To Yoruichi Shihōin) "Haven't you ever heard of a thing called delicacy? It's about defeating my enemies in my own style. My style of fighting is to rely entirely upon lethal doses. Walking up and strangling people sounds like a job better left to ladies like yourself and Bambi."[166]
  • (To Yoruichi Shihōin) "I won't deny that both you and Bambi are attractive... But a woman's worth isn't in her face... It's in her fashion sense!"[167]
  • (To Yūshirō Shihōin) "Oh? You looking for a fight, little lady? Just to warn you, even if you're unarmed, I'll still use my bow."[168]
  • (To Kisuke Urahara) "Hold it! You're probably thinking you can beat my strategy by making her Reiatsu change itself even further, but that's no use. I wouldn't want you to go to all that trouble for nothing, so I'm gonna be nice and tell you about my Vollständig's ability."[169]
  • (To Kisuke Urahara) "Now look, I'm not a fan of all this shit-talking stuff. Saying harsh things all the time just give the impression you’re not confident, y'know? And I prefer to stay as calm and collected as can be."[170]
  • (To Kisuke Urahara) "It's true that loyalty isn't everything to me. I just have a personal interest in His Majesty. Does that make it sound like I'm looking down on him? That's not my intention, of course. The Human World. Hueco Mundo. Soul Society. The guy's trying to destroy three whole worlds and create something new in their wake. Is there any other man who can claim that? If I were to let His Majesty get away, do you think I'd ever find another man like that again? Kisuke Urahara. You're a knowledgeable guy. You look like you've seen everything this world has to offer. So I ask you: don't you feel it too? Aren't you curious to see what His Majesty is going to create once he's destroyed three entire worlds?"[171]
  • (To Kisuke Urahara and Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez while dying) "I'd love to spare you out of respect, but even I can't do anything about this... Neither of you have the strength left to run, do you? I'm real sorry...though I guess, considering who I'm dealing with, you'll probably get out of this somehow, huh? Jeez...wouldn't want to make a fool of myself... So just this once, I won't call this a 'lethal' situation..."[172]
