Soul King Palace (Flag of Japan 霊王宮 [Reiōkyū])

Soul King Palace
Flag of Japan 霊王宮 [Reiōkyū]
is a separate dimension located within Soul Society that serves as the official residence of the Soul King and its Royal Guard.[1]

The Soul King Palace consists of several layers, with one layer suspended above the other. The lowest level is comprised from many buildings of the same style to that of Seireitei. From this, a large stairway leads upwards to a wide and flat expanse, with both areas at the base and top of these stairs being lined by rows of huge, circular pillars. Floating above are five discs with numerous buildings on each, while suspended higher still is a large cylindrical structure that has a conical top and bottom.[2]

The sekkiseki walls that surround Seireitei are ordinarily intended to protect the Soul King Palace, instead meant only to fall down to Seireitei in times of emergency. However, if emergencies occur in succession, they remain in place around Seireitei indefinitely until things are returned to normal.[3]

The Soul King Palace is further protected by 72 barriers between it and the Seireitei. Should these barriers be forced open via clothing constructed from an Ōken, they cannot be closed off for 1 hour and 40 minutes due to the sheer defensive power of the clothing.[4]

597Divine Soldiers

Senjumaru and the Divine Soldiers.

There exist a group of elite guards known as "Divine Soldiers" (Flag of Japan 神兵 [Shinpei])
"Divine Soldiers"
Flag of Japan 神兵 [Shinpei]
which are led by Senjumaru Shutara, who refers to them as the "Blade of the Soul King" (Flag of Japan 霊王の刃 [Reiō no Yaiba])

. Each guard wears a black hakama with a gray sash tied around their waist and a black mask with four light-colored lines tracing over their heads, and their hair is tied into a long spike at the back of their head before being left to hang free about halfway through the length. They are all armed with swords.[5]
599Second-Class Divine Soldier

There is a much more powerful version of these soldiers known as a "Second-Class Divine Soldier" (Flag of Japan 二級神兵 [Nikyū Shinpei])

, which Senjumaru refers to as the "Shield of the Soul King" (Flag of Japan 霊王の盾 [Reiō no Tate])

. It resembles an ordinary soldier, but is extremely large and wears a circular black hat on its head. The backs of its wrist each have one-half of a large, black, circular shield on them.[6]

Yhwach's Changes

628Zeichen Palace

The Soul King Palace after being altered by Yhwach.

After absorbing the Soul King, Yhwach drastically altered the appearance of the Soul King Palace, most notably by bringing the Wandenreich city to the palace and placing the main palace at ground level while covering parts of it with ice.[7] He also connected the five floating cities nearby to the Wandenreich city, thus creating a massive Quincy Zeichen, and formed a massive, tower-like palace with Silbern on the top for his new stronghold; he labeled this new city the Wahrwelt (Flag of Japan 真世界城 (ヴァールヴェルト) [Vāruveruto], German for "True World", Japanese for "True World Castle")
Flag of Japan 真世界城 (ヴァールヴェルト) [Vāruveruto]
German for "True World", Japanese for "True World Castle"
because it would be the cornerstone of his new world.[8] One of the five branches forming the city is known as the Zwei Ast (Flag of Japan 2番枝街 (ヅヴァ・アスト) [Zuvai Asuto], German for "Second Branch", Japanese for "Second Branch City")

The route to the inner dimension in which the palace resides can only be opened with "a key", fittingly named the Ōken (Flag of Japan 王鍵 [Royal Key])
Flag of Japan 王鍵 [Royal Key]
, the location of which is kept secret, only being passed down verbally from one Gotei 13 Captain-Commander to the next.[1] There are only two ways to enter the Spirit King Palace:
  1. With the permission of the Royal Guard. They don't have to be there physically, they only need to want the person to enter.
  2. Make a Royal Key by creating a Royal Guard.[10]
A Royal Guard can also open up a Chōkaimon (Flag of Japan 超界門 [Super World Gate])
Flag of Japan 超界門 [Super World Gate]
to send someone directly to the human world, and use the same gate to send said "someone" back, but to do so requires syncing the arrival and departure times.[11]

The only known method to get from section to section of the Soul King Palace is to be catapulted into the sky, in the direction of the intended destination.[12]

Senjumaru Shutara's City It is the floating city that is the headquarters of the Royal Guard member Senjumaru Shutara. It has multiple buildings that make up the city. One of the rooms is covered entirely in dozens of different fabrics, and has a medium-sized cushioned seat made of wooden bars at the top of the set of stairs. Senjumaru uses this room to take measurements of those whom she creates Ōken Clothing for.[17][18][19][20][21] 545Senjumaru's palace
Ichibē Hyōsube's City It is the floating city that is the headquarters of the Royal Guard member Ichibē Hyōsube. It has multiple buildings that make up the city. The main building is a training dojo, which takes the form of a small building at the top of a flight of stairs carved into the side of a hill. The air is filled with incredibly dense Reishi, which initially prevents visitors unused to such density from moving or breathing properly, though it can be adapted to with time.[22] Ichibē trains visitors in the inner chamber.[23] 545Ichibei's palace

The Royal Guard, also known as the "Zero Division", are the protectors of the Soul King Palace and its residents, particularly the Soul King. Though they commonly remain within the palace, when the Royal Guard do need to travel, their preferred method of transportation takes the form of a huge pillar called the Tenchūren (Flag of Japan 天柱輦 [Heavenly-Pillar Palanquin])

. While this pillar is able to freely exit the inner dimension, it is unable to return to the palace on its own and is instead entirely reliant on outside assistance to do so, such as Kūkaku Shiba's Kakaku Hō (Flag of Japan 花鶴砲 [Flower Crane Cannon])

Yoruichi and Urahara spar in their secret training ground beneath Sōkyoku Hill

A secret training grounds is a place where a person can go to train and become stronger without having to do so publicly, allowing them to focus more on training or hide from others while training.

Urahara Shop training ground

Before beginning his mission into Soul Society to rescue Rukia Kuchiki, Kisuke Urahara takes Ichigo Kurosaki to a huge secret training ground beneath the Urahara Shop, intended to resemble the Sōkyoku Hill training ground.[1] Here, over a period of several days, Urahara helps Ichigo regain his lost Shinigami powers and teaches him the basic techniques of Shinigami combat. Ichigo's partial transformation into a Hollow also takes place here, and Urahara opens the Senkaimon into Soul Society from this room.

The Urahara Shop training ground is a large room with a ceiling and walls painted to resemble a cloudy sky over a floor of desolate, brown, craggy land dotted with dead trees. Urahara claims to have built the room, using Soul Society's technology, in a single day and night.[2]

The final, staged confrontation between the Ryoka and the Mod-Souls Ririn, Kurōdo and Noba also takes place in the training ground.

The training ground is used again by Yasutora Sado as he spars with Renji Abarai to master higher levels of his power; from there, Ichigo, Chad, and Uryū Ishida make their way through the Garganta into Hueco Mundo.

Sōkyoku Hill training ground

Urahara styled his shop's secret training ground on one he built beneath Sōkyoku Hill while young. In this training ground, he and Yoruichi Shihōin would play and train. When Ichigo Kurosaki narrowly escapes defeat by Byakuya Kuchiki, Yoruichi takes him to this training ground in order that he might rapidly attain Bankai through use of the Tenshintai. Renji also attains Bankai in this space.

While very similar in appearance to the Urahara Shop's training ground, the Sōkyoku Hill training ground also sports a hot springs whose waters have the power of healing injuries[3].

Visored warehouse training ground

Beneath the Visored's warehouse hideout is another secret training ground, bearing a strong resemblance to those beneath the Urahara Shop and the Sōkyoku Hill. Ichigo's mastery of his inner Hollow and his training with the Visored takes place here; Orihime Inoue also meets and befriends Hachigen Ushōda here as he heals Tsubaki.

Karakura Hospital training ground

Ryūken Ishida has constructed a training area inside Karakura Hospital. In this stark, metallic chamber, Ryūken fights Uryū to exhaustion, finally shooting him with a Quincy Spirit Arrow to restore his lost abilities.

Hell (Flag of Japan 地獄 [Jigoku])

Flag of Japan 地獄 [Jigoku]
is the place where Hollows are sent if they were wicked when they were alive.

The Zanpakutō of a Shinigami can only cleanse spirits of the sins they committed as Hollows. If the spirit committed heinous crimes as a Human, it will be sent through the Gates of Hell instead of Soul Society.[1]

When Ichigo Kurosaki defeated the Hollow Shrieker, he did so by slashing Shrieker's Hollow mask. The Gates appear to be formed from energy or light which emerges from the wound.[2] The Gates of Hell (Flag of Japan 地獄の門 [Jigoku no Mon])
Gates of Hell
Flag of Japan 地獄の門 [Jigoku no Mon]
are chained shut and adorned with the bandaged head and torso of a skeleton on each door. The arms of both skeletons are positioned at an angle to pull the gates open when it is summoned.

On the inside, the Gates appear to be prevented from opening fully by two thick ropes with charms attached to them. The face and left arm of a large demonic creature can be seen behind the Gates.[3] It has armor plating on its upper arm and it wields a blade. Its left arm and face are covered in tattoos resembling tribal markings. The demon skewers the Hollow entering Hell with its blade, and pulls it through the Gates, while laughing. The Gates then close and the entire structure cracks and crumbles into nothing.[4]

Appearances in Other Media

THVGates of Hell

The Gates of Hell as seen in The Hell Verse.

In Bleach: The Hell Verse, the spiritual inhabitants of Hell are known as Togabito. Hell, under the right circumstances, can lend its power to a person through the Kushanāda, granting them golden armor decorated with skull symbols known as Skull-Clad Form.[5] In The Hell Verse, the Gates of Hell have a markedly different appearance to the Gates established in canon manga. Namely, the Gates featured in the movie are colored red and are adorned with fiery patterns streaking across the surface. Also, the Gates are held together by a black column embossed with gold cygnets, which is bound by a series of chains.[5] The demonic creature's arm (which belongs to a Kushanāda) with a knife is much larger as well, being able to completely disintegrate Murakumo on impact.[5]

Effect Upon Hollowfication

THVMask forms

Ichigo's Hollow Mask manifests itself.

Kokutō explains that the unique environment of Hell also has an adverse effect on individuals that possess Hollow-like abilities. While the extent to which is unknown, Hell's influence is powerful enough to coax Ichigo Kurosaki into inadvertently summoning his Hollow mask to defeat a Kushanāda. Kokutō also confirms that if Ichigo lets his guard down whilst fighting in Hell, his Hollow powers will manifest and take over his body. This happens on two separate occasions, wherein his inner Hollow completely takes over his body in Hell.[5]

The First Level

THVFirst Level of Hell

The First Level of Hell.

  • First Level (第一階層, Dai Ichi Kaisō) : The First Level of Hell features a multitude of white blocks floating in mid-air among a series of blue pathways. It is on this level that many of the dejected Togabito reside, having given up on resistance. Renji Abarai commented that the First Level of Hell has Reiatsu so strangled that people with normal Reiatsu would go insane. This level is where the majority of Kushanāda patrol frequently, in order to prey upon the weaker Togabito. At the edge of the blue pathway is a gaping abyss, through which the next level can be accessed.[5]

The Second Level

THVSecond Level of Hell

The Second Level of Hell.

  • Second Level (第二階層, Dai Nii Kaisō): The Second Level of Hell is mostly composed of a large body of water. Within this large expanse of water, are a multitude of stone water lilies, in the center of which lies a pierced skeleton of a Kushanāda. It is on this level that Ichigo Kurosaki and his friends initially battle with the Togabito in Hell. The body of water can also be navigated through, and ultimately leads to the third level.[5]

The Third Level

THVThird Level of Hell

The Third Level of Hell.

  • Third Level (第三階層, Dai San Kaisō): The Third Level of Hell is a rocky, barren landscape with various craters in which yellow lava forms. It is here that Szayelaporro Granz and Aaroniero Arruruerie battled with Shuren and his comrades.[6] Ichigo and Kokutō navigate through this area to reach Shuren's base at the lowermost level of Hell. Taikon, Gunjō, and Garogai are all defeated on this level. After the rocky landscape is cleared, there is a narrow passageway lit with the dim lighting from various shrines.[5]

The Fourth Level

THVFourth Level of Hell

The Fourth Level of Hell.

  • Fourth Level (第四階層, Dai Shi Kaisō): The Fourth Level of Hell starts off with a hilly area in which there are a multitude of small domes jutting out of the ground. From the opening in the face of a cliff, a thundering waterfall with the yellow lava rains down around it. The sand which emits trace amounts of Reiatsu is comprised of the crushed bones of millions of Togabito, who turned to ash due to the hopelessness of their predicament. This section then crosses over into a giant skeleton resembling the ones which make up the Gates of Hell. This overlooks a pit of lava, which has the ability to resurrect killed Togabito. Around the skeletal structure, is a series of pillars and a set of stone fingers.[5]

The Lowermost Level

THVLowermost Level of Hell

The Lowermost Level of Hell.

  • Lowermost Level (最奥部, Saiōbu): The Lowermost Level of Hell is composed of a black landscape, with many irregular columns covered in veins of lava jutting out from the ground. The Kushanāda are capable of materializing from within these lava columns. This level was where Kokutō was imprisoned in Hell, and also where he subsequently awoke after witnessing Ichigo's Hollowfication. Lightning strikes are a frequent occurrence here. There are also withered trees composed of bones littered across the landscape, from which Kokutō hangs the bodies of Lieutenant Renji Abarai and Uryū Ishida for Ichigo to see.[5]
